2002 Meet Recaps May 23-25, at NAIA Outdoor Championships Sergio Reyes paced the Yellow Jackets to an 18th-place tie at the NAIA National Track & Field Championships by winning the 10,000 meter run and finishing 3rd in the 5,000. Reyes won the 10K with a time of 30:13.42 to pick up 10 points for CU. He became just the second Yellow Jacket to be an NAIA champion joining Chad Eder who won the 5K race walk in 1996. He registered Cedarville's other six points upon placing 3rd in the 5K in 14:27.39. Azusa Pacific CA won the team championship with 54 points while Life GA was the runner-up with 50. The Jackets totaled 16 points. [COMPLETE RESULTS] May 11, at Indiana Invitational Sergio Reyes won the 3,000 meter run and Andy Paugh set two personal bests in the hurdles at the Indiana University Invitational. Reyes won the rare 3K men's event with a time of 8:28.78. Paugh placed 8th in the 400 meter hurdles in 54.68 seconds and he was 16th in the 110 meter hurdles in 15.13 seconds - both career lows. [COMPLETE RESULTS AND CEDARVILLE RESULTS] May 4, at NCCAA Championships Sergio Reyes was voted the Outstanding Performer of the Meet after setting records in the 5K and 10K at the NCCAA National Championships. He won the 10K in a school-record time of 30:01.77 which eclipsed the 24-year old record of Brian Hull by eight seconds. Reyes also took the 5K with a time of 14:34.98. Cedarville had three 2nd-place finishes. That trio consisted of Josh Mark in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:24.30), Mike Marsh in the long jump (21-9), and Carl Traub in the hammer throw (159-9). The Yellow Jackets placed 4th out of 17 schools with 90.5 points. Greenville repeated as champion with 197 points and was followed by Taylor, 125; and Malone, 123 points. The Pioneers finished with 154 points while CU tallied 149 in the nine-team event. Sergio Reyes repeated as champion in both the 1,500 (4:04.57) and the 5,000 (14:59.38). Andy Paugh won the high jump at 6-feet 6-inches and the 4 x 800 meter relay unit of Justin Whitaker, Jeremy Hilty, Sergio Reyes, and Drew Nelson was a winner in 7:57.07. Cedarville had second-place finishes in four other events. That quartet includes Drew Nelson in the 800 (1:54.42), Mike Marsh in the long jump (22-8), Jody Fox in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:26.73), and Carl Traub in the hammer (160-5). [COMPLETE RESULTS AND CEDARVILLE RESULTS] April 20, at Butler Invitational Drew Nelson and Andy Paugh were Cedarville's top performers at the Butler Invitational. Nelson turned in a time of 49.82 seconds in the 400 meter dash which was the fastest effort in the event for the Yellow Jackets this spring. Paugh had a season-low time of 55.35 seconds in the 400 meter hurdles while Ben Evenson produced a season-best 13-feet 2-inches in the pole vault. [CEDARVILLE RESULTS] April 13, at Miami Invitational Josh Mark, who won the 3,000 meter steeplechase, and Drew Nelson, who was 2nd in the 800 meters, both met the NAIA automatic qualifying standard at the Miami Invitational. Mark's time was 9:24.96 while Nelson was clocked in 1:52.10. Sergio Reyes lowered his NAIA qualifying time in the 5,000 meters with a 2nd-place effort of 14:34.93. Jody Fox was 3rd in the steeple in 9:28.38 and Andy Paugh cleared 6-feet 8-inches in the high jump to finish 4th. Cedarville placed 7th out of 10 teams despite being the only non-NCAA Division I school entered. [CEDARVILLE RESULTS] April 6, at Wilmington Invitational Josh Mark won the 3,000 meter steeplechase and Mike Marsh claimed the long jump title as Cedarville placed 2nd at the Wilmington Invitational. The host Quakers totaled 163 points, the Jackets had 126, and Muskingum tallied 80.5 points to finish 3rd in the 17-team field. Mark won the steeple in 9:39.35 while Marsh was a winner in the long jump at 6.54 meters. Second-place finishes came from Andy Goodenough in the 800 meters (1:56.81), Sergio Reyes in the 1,500 (4:00.64), Carl Traub in the hammer (152-4), and the 4 x 400 meter relay team (3:23.18). [COMPLETE RESULTS] March 30, at Cincinnati Invitational Sergio Reyes, who earlier met the NAIA automatic qualifying mark in the 10,000 meters, qualified in the 5K at the Cincinnati Invitational. He placed 2nd with a time of 14:48.48. Kent Ruth was 3rd in the javelin with a heave of 176-4. The Yellow Jackets placed 6th out of eight schools competing primarily against NCAA Division I competition. [COMPLETE RESULTS] March 20-23, at Florida State Relays Sergio Reyes met the NAIA automatic qualifying mark in the 10,000 meters with a time of 30:37.67 which placed 2nd at the Florida State University Relays. Mike Marsh totaled 6,492 points in the decathlon for a 3rd-place finish and is an NAIA automatic qualifier. The meet was non-scoring. [COMPLETE RESULTS] Feb. 28 - March 2, at NAIA Indoor Championships Four Cedarville athletes earned All-America honors at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships. The top six finishers in each event are All-Americans. Junior Drew Nelson led the way by placing 3rd in the 800 meters in 1:54.73. Senior Andy Paugh tied for 6th in the high jump by clearing 6-feet 7-inches; senior Sergio Reyes was 6th in the 5,000 meters in 14:49.53; and senior Mike Marsh was 6th in the pentathlon with 3,470 points. [COMPLETE RESULTS] Feb. 22, at Denison Indoor Qualifier Mike Marsh placed in three events and Andy Paugh placed in two at the Denison Indoor Qualifier. Marsh placed 2nd in the long jump (20-6.50), 2nd in the high jump (6-2), and 5th in the 55 meter hurdles (8.41). Paugh tied Marsh for 2nd in the high jump (6-2) and was 4th in the 55 meter hurldes (8.20). The two were part of a small CU contingent preparing for the upcoming NAIA Indoor Championships. [COMPLETE RESULTS] Feb. 16, at Kent State Invitational Sergio Reyes lowered his own school record in the 5,000 meter run and Drew Nelson met the NAIA qualifying mark in the 800 meters at the Kent State Invitational. Reyes placed 2nd in the 5K in 14:36.86 while Nelson was 9th in the 800 in 1:55.71. [COMPLETE RESULTS] Feb. 16, at Denison Indoor Classic Cedarville won four events at the Denison Indoor Classic. Eric Yearley won the 55 meter hurdles in 8.58 seconds; Matt Sterner was a winner in the 400 meter dash in 52.60 seconds; Justin Whitaker claimed the 800 in 1:59.15; and the 4 x 400 meter relay squad was also victorious in 3:31.76. [COMPLETE RESULTS] Feb. 9, at All-Ohio Indoor Championships Cedarville won the NAIA division of the All-Ohio Indoor Championships with Sergio Reyes leading the way with a new school record and NAIA national qualifying mark in the 3,000 meter run. He was the overall winner of the event with a time of 8:24.23. Drew Nelson was 6th overall in the 800 meters (1:58.57); Andy Paugh was 8th in the high jump (6-4); and Mike Marsh placed 9th in the long jump (20-10.5). CU totaled 72 points among NAIA schools and was followed by Malone, 40; Central State, 32; and Tiffin, 30. Third-place finishes came from Eric Yearley in the 55-meter hurdles (8.41), Andy Goodenough in the 800 meters (2:00.19), and Ben Evenson in the pole vault (13-6). [COMPLETE RESULTS] Jan. 25-26, at Findlay Indoor Invitational Sergio Reyes met the NAIA national qualifying mark in the 5,000 meter run at the Findlay Indoor Invitational. He placed 2nd in the event with a school-record time of 14:44.54 by taking nine seconds off the mark he set last year. Reyes was an NAIA Indoor All-American in the 5K last winter. Ben Evenson placed 2nd in the pole vault by clearing 13-feet 11.25-inches. Andy Paugh was 7th in the high jump with an effort of 6-feet 4.75-inches and Carl Traub finished 10th in the weight throw with a heave of 49-feet 8.25-inches. [COMPLETE RESULTS] Jan. 18, at Ohio Northern Indoor NAIA All-American Sergio Reyes won two events while Drew Nelson and Andy Paugh claimed one apiece in the season-opening meet at the Ohio Northern Friday Night Series. Reyes was a winner in the 1,000 meters in 2:33.02 and then followed that with another win in the 1,500 in 4:02.0. Drew Nelson took the top spot in the 800 meters in 1:59.46 while Paugh won the high jump by clearing 6-feet 6.25-inches. Cedarville placed third out of ten schools with 77.5 points.
