2003 Game Recaps May 15, Bethel (NCCAA National Tournament) Defending national champion Bethel shut down Cedarville, 4-0, to end the Yellow Jackets' season at the National Christian College Athletic Association Tournament. The Pilots broke a scoreless contest when they manufactured a run in the top of the fifth inning. They added another run in the sixth and two more in the seventh. Each had four hits. Jeff Lowe went 2-for-3 with a double for the Jackets. O.J. Skiles and Brody Morris added singles. [BOXSCORE] May 14, Spring Arbor (NCCAA National Tournament) No. 1 Spring Arbor nipped the Jackets, 2-0, in a pitchers' duel during the second round of the NCCAA Nationals. It was a rematch of the Midwest Regional when Cedarville claimed their first region banner after posting back-to-back wins against Spring Arbor. This time, the top-seeded Cougars broke a scoreless tie by scoring two runs after two were out in the sixth inning spoiling an outstanding pitching performance by freshman lefthander Matt Bonin. He allowed four hits and struck out six without walking a batter, but three of those hits came in the decisive sixth frame. The Jackets managed only two hits - a second-inning single by Eric Carroll and a single by Brody Morris in the fourth. The last 10 CU batters were retired in order. [BOXSCORE] May 14, Greenville (NCCAA National Tournament) No. 9 seed Cedarville won their first-ever NCCAA National Tournament game, 3-1, over No. 8 Greenville. T.J. Couch tossed a one-hitter allowing an unearned run with 10 strikeouts. The Jackets scored twice in the second inning when Andrew Noble, who went 3-for-3 in the game, opened with a single, moved to third on a double by O.J. Skiles, and scored on Eric Carroll's RBI single. Forrest Greetham pushed Skiles across the plate with a successful suicide squeeze bunt. CU plated their third run in the fourth inning when Noble doubled and Carroll followed with another RBI single. Greenville scored in the sixth inning after two were out due to back-to-back errors committed by the Jackets sandwiched around a stolen base. [BOXSCORE] May 2, SPRING ARBOR (NCCAA Midwest Regional) Jeff Lowe's two-out single in the bottom of the 7th inning scored Dave Terrill from second base to give Cedarville a 5-4 victory over Spring Arbor and their first-ever NCCAA Midwest Region championship. The Jackets advance to the NCCAA National Tournament on May 14-17 in Celina, Ohio. To get there, CU had to go through a program ranked No. 14 in the NAIA and a three-time NCCAA national champion. The Jackets broke a scoreless game with four runs in the bottom of the 5th inning. Forest Greetham tripled home a run, Travis Allen followed with an RBI single and Lowe drilled a two-run triple. After Spring Arbor struck for two runs in the 6th, rains forced suspension of the contest until Saturday. The visiting Cougars got a dramatic two-run homer in the top of the 7th inning to tie the game. Then, with one out in the bottom of the 7th, Terrill and Allen reached on Spring Arbor fielding errors that set up Lowe's heroics. [BOXSCORE] May 1, SPRING ARBOR (NCCAA Midwest Regional) T.J. Couch tossed a one-hitter to blank NAIA No. 14 Spring Arbor, 5-0, in the second round of the NCCAA Midwest Regional. Couch allowed only a one-out single in the second inning. He struck out four and walked two. Brody Morris, Eric Carroll, and Dave Terrill all had two hits each. The Jackets scored three unearned runs in the fourth inning to account for the 5-0 final. [BOXSCORE] May 1, CONCORDIA (NCCAA Midwest Regional) Matt Bonin spun a four-hit, 6-0 win over Concordia in the first game of the NCCAA Midwest Regional. Cedarville started quickly by scoring four runs in their first at bat. Travis Allen had two hits including an inside-the-park home run. Carroll, Jeff Lowe, and Jon Oren registered two hits each. Bonin fanned seven batters with one walk. [BOXSCORE] April 29, OHIO DOMINICAN Jacob Richardson and T.J. Couch combined for a three-hitter as the Jackets beat NAIA No. 18 Ohio Dominican, 8-3, to gain a split in their American Mideast Conference South Division doubleheader. The Panthers won the first game, 10-1. Cedarville recorded 12 hits in the second contest with three coming off the bat of Jeff Lowe. Eric Carroll and Dave Terrill added two hits each to the offense. CU took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth inning and then blew the game open by scoring five runs. Richardson got away with eight walks in six innings, but allowed just one hit, and Couch pitched the seventh inning with two of the three runs allowed being unearned. ODU left 13 runners on base. [GAME 2 BOXSCORE] It was all Panthers in the opener as the visitors put the game out of reach with a five-run sixth inning. Cedarville managed just four hits total with one each from four different players. [GAME 1 BOXSCORE] April 26, TEMPLE BAPTIST Cedarville ended a two-game slide with a convincing 13-1 win over Temple Baptist in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader. The visiting Rams won the opener, 14-8. The Jackets hammered 16 hits in the second game while pitchers Matt Bonin and T.J. Couch combined on a one-hitter in a contest halted in the 5th inning due to the 10-run mercy rule. Jeff Lowe hit his 8th home run of the season and upped his school-record RBI total to 42. O.J. Skiles homered, Andrew Noble went 3-for-4, and Travis Allen, Eric Carroll, and Forest Greetham all had two hits each. [GAME 2 BOXSCORE] Temple Baptist broke open a tight slugfest in the first game with a five-run sixth inning. Jon Oren had three hits including two doubles while Carroll was 2-for-4. [GAME 1 BOXSCORE] April 23, at Bluffton Bluffton brought the Yellow Jackets' three-game winning streak to a halt with a 6-2 non-conference victory. The Beavers ended a nine-game losing skid despite an offense that produced just seven singles on the day. All six BC runs were unearned as the Jackets committed four errors. Cedarville finished with nine hits - two each from Brody Morris and Dave Terrill - but left 10 runners on base. [GAME BOXSCORE] April 22, EARLHAM Matt Bonin and Jacob Richardson combined on a five-hitter as the Yellow Jackets shut down Earlham, 10-0, in a non-conference game. Bonin allowed four hits with seven strikeouts and no walks while Richardson pitched two innings with a hit, two strikeouts, and one walk. The game was halted after the 8th inning due to the 10-run mercy rule and it was the first shutout of the season for Cedarville. Jeff Lowe had three hits and two RBI's, Brody Morris tallied two hits and scored four times, and Dave Terrill cracked a solo homer as one of his two hits. Jon Oren and Andrew Noble also contributed two hits each. [GAME BOXSCORE] April 19, at Tiffin The Yellow Jackets shocked host Tiffin twice in American Mideast Conference South Division action, 8-6 and 10-7, and Jeff Lowe established a new school record for runs batted in during a season with 36. Cedarville, who had been swept at home by the Dragons three weeks earlier, used a six-run third inning to break a 1-1 tie in the opener. Lowe had two hits including an RBI single which broke the previous school RBI record of 34. Brody Morris, Jon Oren, and Dave Terrill added two hits each. Josh Smith was the winning pitcher while John Myers retired the final three batters for the save. [GAME 1 BOXSCORE] The Jackets held a slim 5-4 lead in the second game before Lowe launched a solo home run in the sixth inning for his 36th RBI of the year and CU erupted for four runs in the seventh. Morris, Oren, Andrew Noble, Corey Knoedler, and Travis Allen recorded two hits apiece. Noble's solo homer in the second inning was the first run of the game. T.J. Couch struck out five batters and improved his record to 4-3 while John Meyers registered his second save of the day. [GAME 2 BOXSCORE] April 16, at Morehead State NCAA Division I Morehead State pounded four home runs and pulled away for a 12-2 non-conference victory over the Yellow Jackets. Cedarville dented the plate first when Brody Morris scored from third on a double play ball in the third inning. The host Eagles scored twice in the fourth inning, but the Jackets bounced back to knot the score in the fifth when Forest Greetham drove in Morris with a single. MSU took the lead for good with a run in their half of the fifth, and then they put the contest away with five runs in the sixth inning and four more in the eighth. Morris and Jon Oren were both 2-for-4 in the game. Seven of the Eagles' ten hits went for extra bases. [GAME BOXSCORE] April 15, SHAWNEE STATE American Mideast Conference South Division leader Shawnee State swept past Cedarville, 7-0 and 7-2. The Yellow Jackets scraped out seven hits in the first game, but left nine runners on base. Eric Carroll and Jameson Adams both doubled. [GAME 1 BOXSCORE] The Bears jumped out to a 7-0 in the second game before the Jackets scored two unearned runs in the fifth inning. Jeff Lowe had two hits including a triple and tied the school record for the most RBI's in a single season with 34. [GAME 2 BOXSCORE] April 14, URBANA The Yellow Jackets picked up their first two American Mideast Conference South Division victories of the year by defeating Urbana, 9-6 and 8-4, on a day when junior pitcher T.J. came on in relief to save the opener and then hurled a complete-game win in the nightcap. The first game was the completion of a contest that was suspended on April 4 in Urbana in the top of the third inning with the Blue Knights leading, 6-1. When play resumed, CU finished with a five-run inning and then scored two runs in both the sixth and seventh frames to win it. Jon Oren, Dave Terrill, and Brody Morris all had three hits each. Kiel Boynton was the winning pitcher while Couch pitched the final 1 2/3 innings. [SEE GAME 2 BOXSCORE ON APRIL 4] The Jackets bounced back from a 4-3 deficit in the second game to complete the sweep. Couch tossed a two-hitter with seven strikeouts and two walks. Morris added two more hits while O.J. Skiles was 2-for-2 with two runs scored. [GAME BOXSCORE] April 12, RIO GRANDE Rio Grande swiped a pair of American Mideast Conference South Division games from Cedarville by scores of 5-3 and 13-10. The Yellow Jackets were unable to come up with key hits in the first game. Trailing 3-2 in the third inning, CU loaded the bases with a run in and no outs, but failed to score again. Jeff Lowe drove in two runs with a sacrifice fly and by getting hit with a pitch with the bases loaded. Forest Greetham stole three bases and Travis Allen tripled and scored. [GAME 1 BOXSCORE] Cedarville nearly rallied from a 9-2 deficit in the second contest. The Jackets scored six times in the fourth inning before leaving the bases loaded. Jeff Lowe was 2-for-5 with a homer and three RBI's, Eric Carroll was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and two runs scored, and Forest Greetham was 4-for-5 with a triple, two steals, and two runs scored. Jon Oren doubled twice while Brody Morris was 2-for-4 with three RBI's. [GAME 2 BOXSCORE] April 11, WILMINGTON Jeff Lowe and Andrew Noble each homered and combined for six runs batted in to pace Cedarville to an 8-1 victory over Wilmington in a non-conference game. Lowe, who was 2-for-4 in the game, drilled a two-run shot for his fifth homer of the season while Noble, who was 3-for-4 with four RBI's, pounded his second bomb of the year. Wilmington plated their lone run in the first inning and the Jackets went hitless until the fourth when they scored twice on four hits. Noble grounded a two-run single through the left side to give CU the lead for good. Lowe hit his homer in the fifth over the 402 marker in straight away center field, Dave Terrill doubled home a run in the sixth, Noble socked his homer in the eighth as part of a three-run inning which culminated in an RBI single from Eric Carroll. T.J. Couch was the winning pitcher in relief of Noble by going four scoreless innings with five strikeouts, a walk and two hits. John Myers pitched the ninth. [GAME BOXSCORE] April 5, at Ohio Dominican NAIA No. 22 Ohio Dominican swept an American Mideast Conference South Division doubleheader from the Yellow Jackets by scores of 11-1 and 6-5. A pair of four-run innings carried the Panthers in the opener which was halted in the sixth inning due to the 10-run mercy rule. Eric Carroll doubled for one of CU's six hits. [GAME 1 BOXSCORE] Jeff Lowe's third-inning grand slam sparked the Jackets to a 4-1 lead before Ohio Dominican rallied with three runs in the third and two more in the fifth. Cedarville was limited to four hits in the game. [GAME 2 BOXSCORE] April 4, at Urbana Urbana rallied from an early deficit and then held on for a 13-9 victory over Cedarville in American Mideast Conference South Division action. The second game was suspended due to the weather. The Yellow Jackets opened with a four-run first inning which culminated in Jameson Adams' two-run homer. However, the Blue Knights scored 13 unanswered runs and they took the lead for good by crossing the plate five times in the fourth. CU made it interesting with five runs in the seventh inning and the game ended with two runs left on base. Jon Oren was 3-for-4 with three RBI's which came on a bases loaded triple. Adams was 2-for-4 with three RBI's while Justin Zenn added two hits. [GAME 1 BOXSCORE] The second game was suspended with Urbana leading 6-1 in the top of the third inning. [GAME 2 BOXSCORE] April 3, WITTENBERG Winning pitcher Josh Smith tossed eight strong innings and Jon Oren had four hits to help the Yellow Jackets end a five-game losing streak with a 5-2 non-conference victory over Wittenberg. Oren's bunt single in the first inning scored pinch runner Travis Allen from second base when the Tigers misplayed the throw to first. Jeff Lowe doubled home a run in the third inning and Oren followed with an RBI single. CU completed their scoring in the sixth when O.J. Skiles tripled to score Andrew Noble and Eric Carroll followed with a pinch hit single. Wittenberg plated their two runs in the eighth inning. Smith allowed seven hits, struck out two, and walked one. T.J. Couch pitched the ninth inning and finished with back-to-back strikeouts for his second save of the year. [GAME BOXSCORE] April 1, TIFFIN Tiffin held Cedarville's offense in check while sweeping an American Mideast Conference South Division doubleheader, 12-1 and 3-0. The Dragons scored the first eight runs in the opener beginning with five runs in the second frame. Six of TU's 10 hits went for extra bases including a pair of home runs. The Jackets recorded four singles from four separate players. [GAME 1 BOXSCORE] Tiffin scored all three of their runs in the fifth inning of the nightcap on five hits and a couple of Yellow Jacket errors. Cedarville had six hits including two from Forest Greetham. [GAME 2 BOXSCORE] March 29, at Rio Grande Rio Grande downed the Jackets, 6-0 and 6-2, in American Mideast Conference South Division play. The Redmen broke open a tight game in the opener with a five-run fifth inning. The Yellow Jackets managed only five singles at the plate from five different players. [GAME 1 BOXSCORE] Cedarville mustered just two runs on two hits in the second contest. The Redmen manufactured their six runs on only three hits, but they took advantage of eight walks. [GAME 2 BOXSCORE] March 27, at Georgetown Cedarville completed their spring break trip by splitting a non-conference doubleheader at Georgetown. The Jackets won the opener, 3-2. Jon Oren's two-out two-run single broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning. Dave Terrill had two hits while Andrew Noble and Eric Carroll both doubled. Rookie lefthander Matt Bonin struck out five and picked up his first career victory. John Myers pitched the final inning to get his first save of the season. [GAME 1 BOXSCORE] The host Tigers rallied from an 8-0 deficit with a nine-run fifth inning to stun Cedarville in the nightcap, 10-9. Georgetown entered the decisive frame with only two hits to their credit, but they put together the big inning on seven hits and one CU error. Jeff Lowe hammered his third home run of the season and Dave Terrill hit his first. Andrew Noble was the winning pitcher in the contest that was called after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule. [GAME 2 BOXSCORE] March 25, at University of the South Andrew Noble drilled a game-winning three-run homer in the sixth inning to give Cedarville a 12-11 victory at the University of the South and a split of their non-conference doubleheader. The Jackets trailed 9-4 after three innings, tied the game with a five-run fourth inning, but faced an 11-9 deficit heading to the sixth. Jeff Lowe homered twice and drove in four runs to aid the offense. [GAME 2 BOXSCORE] The Tigers cruised to a 15-6 win in the opener. O.J. Skiles was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in for Cedarville. Jon Oren added two hits and scored twice. [GAME 1 BOXSCORE] March 24, at Shorter Shorter spotted the Yellow Jackets an early lead and then pulled away for a 12-2 non-conference victory. Cedarville had a 2-1 advantage heading to the bottom of the third inning, but the Hawks took the lead for good with three runs. The Jackets only managed three hits off of the bats of Jon Oren, Jeff Lowe, and Forest Greetham and CU committed five errors. Shorter scored their runs on nine hits and they committed two errors. [GAME BOXSCORE] March 18, at Thomas More Thomas More hung on for an 8-6 non-conference victory over the Yellow Jackets. Cedarville outhit the Saints, 13-8, but stranded 13 runners on base. The hosts led 8-2 before CU rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh inning to account for the final score. Jon Oren was 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI's. Jeff Lowe doubled twice while Forest Greetham and Eric Carroll also added two hits apiece. [GAME BOXSCORE] March 14, at Shawnee State Shawnee State rallied for four runs in their final at bat to complete a doubleheader sweep over Cedarville in the American Mideast Conference South Division opener for both schools. The Bears won by scores of 8-4 and 6-5. Jeff Lowe was 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI's in the nightcap. Brody Morris and Jon Oren were both 2-for-4 in the game in which the Jackets took a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning before SSU scored four times against the bullpen. [GAME 2 BOXSCORE] Andrew Noble was 2-for-3 in the opener with an RBI while Lowe drove in two more runs. [GAME 1 BOXSCORE] March 7, at Cumberland Unbeaten Cumberland rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to complete a sweep in what was Cedarville's season-opening doubleheader of the season. The Patriots won the second game, 2-1, after grabbing the opener, 8-0. Rookie lefthander Matt Bonin took a four-hit, 1-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning of the nightcap and had allowed just one walk. He opened the frame by striking out his seventh batter of the contest before Cumberland rallied with two straight doubles and then added two more singles against the Jackets' bullpen to close it out. Corey Knoedler had two hits including a triple and a run scored for CU while Jeff Lowe added two hits. [GAME 2 BOXSCORE] It was all Cumberland in the opener as they scored four unearned runs and limited Cedarville to four hits. [GAME 1 BOXSCORE] |
