2004 Meet Recaps May 27-29, at NAIA Outdoor Championships Freshman Jason Scott won the NAIA pole vault championship with a school-record effort of 16-feet 7.50-inches thus becoming only the third Yellow Jacket to ever win an NAIA title. He finished the season by winning his last five competitions and seven overall. Scott added 4½ inches to the school record with his winning leap. He joins 5K race walk champion Chad Eder (1996) and 10K winner Sergio Reyes (2002) as CU's only NAIA champions. Elsewhere, Joel Smith placed 9th in the high jump (6-7.50), Tim Beck was 12th in the javelin (187-6), James Yahara was 17th in the hammer (150-5), and Dan Campbell placed 19th in the 5,000 meters (15:48.71). Kevin Hall was 9th in his heat of the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10:06.90. The 10 points that Scott was awarded for winning the pole vault placed Cedarville in a tie for 28th place out of 101 competing institutions. It's the sixth victory overall for the freshman vaulter during the outdoor season. Joel Smith finished 2nd in the high jump with a 6-5 effort and Tim Beck was 2nd in the javelin with a heave of 177-feet even. James Yahara placed 4th in the hammer at 145-9 and Josh Mark was 4th in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 10:18.77. [COMPLETE RESULTS] May 6-8, at NCCAA Outdoor Nationals Cedarville won five events and had six different athletes earn All-America honors at the NCCAA Outdoor Championships where the Yellow Jackets tied for 3rd place out of 16 teams. Jason Scott picked up All-America recognition (top 3 finishers) in two events. He won the pole vault by clearing 15-feet 11-inches and then placed 2nd in the 110 meter hurdles in 14.97 seconds. Other CU champions were Joel Smith in the high jump (6-5.50), Kevin Hall in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:35.63), James Yahara in the hammer (159-3), and Tim Beck in the javelin (195-1), whose heave qualified him for the NAIA Nationals. Ryan Bundenthal was 3rd in the 400 meter hurdles in 56.65 seconds. Greenville won the meet with 169 points. Malone was 2nd with 116 points while Cedarville and Taylor tied for 3rd with 101. [COMPLETE RESULTS and PHOTO GALLERY] April 24, at American Mideast Conference Jason Scott tied a meet record in winning the pole vault and Tim Beck was the javelin champion at the 54th Annual American Mideast Conference Track & Field Championship. The Yellow Jackets placed 2nd as a team in the nine-team meet hosted by Roberts Wesleyan College. Scott cleared 15-feet 6-inches to tie the AMC record first set by Cedarville assistant coach Jon Plush back in 1992. Scott was also 2nd in the 110 meter hurdles in 15.38 seconds. Beck, on the other hand, won the javelin competition by more than 10 feet with a heave of 180-5. The Yellow Jackets had no less than seven other athletes place 2nd in their respective events. That list includes Kevin Hall in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:34.16), Chris DeLange in the 400 meter dash (50.32), Joel Smith in the high jump (6-6), Ryan Bundenthal in the 400 meter hurdles (57.61), Dan Campbell in the 1,500 meters (4:03.21), Andy Goodenough in the 800 meters (1:57.80), and James Yahara in the hammer (160-2). The Jackets totaled 160 points to nip runner-up Tiffin by a point and 3rd-place Malone by three points in the eight-team field. Yahara unloaded a school-record heave of 169-feet 4-inches which was enough to score 10 points for CU. Jason Scott won the pole vault by clearing 15-feet even. Cedarville registered four other 1st-place finishes. Cedarville totaled 32.5 points in the 10-team field that consisted of nine NCAA Division I schools. Joel Smith cleared a career-best 6-feet 8.75-inches to place 3rd in the high jump. Kevin Hall finished 4th in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 9:41.73 while James Yahara was 5th in the hammer with a throw of 157-1. The 4 x 100 meter relay team of Jason Mattern, Todd Marquardt, Scott Marquardt, and Matt Brunelle placed 5th with a time of 47.06 seconds. [COMPLETE RESULTS and PHOTO GALLERY] April 3, at Ohio Invitational Kevin Hall won the 3,000 meter steeplechase to pace the Yellow Jackets at the Ohio University Invitational. Cedarville finished 6th in the 12-team meet. Hall won the steeplechase with a time of 9:51.78 while teammate Josh Mark finished 3rd in 10:04.26. Chris Stairs was 3rd in the triple jump at 39-feet 11.25-inches and he was 6th in the javelin with a heave of 150-4. Other Yellow Jackets to score (top 8 finishers) included Chris DeLange and Joel Smith, who tied for 6th in the high jump (6-2); Ryan Bundenthal, who was 7th in the 400 meter hurdles (58.39) and 8th in the 110 meter high hurdles (16.01); and Dan Campbell, who was 8th in the 1,500 meters (4:06.07). The 4 x 100 meter relay team placed 5th (47.84) and the 4 x 400 squad was 7th (3:29.03). Kent State won the meet with 182.5 points and was followed by the host Bobcats, who tallied 117.75 points. Scott captured his second straight outdoor pole vault title. He cleared 15-feet even to win the event by a foot. Teammate Justin Mattern finished 4th at 14-feet even. Scott already met the NAIA automatic qualifying standard a week earlier at Indiana Wesleyan. Jimmy Sawin placed 4th in the high jump at 6-2. Dan Campbell was 5th in the 1,500 meters at 4:05.86 while Mark Swan was 5th in the 800 meters at 1:58.99. Mount Union won the team title with 183 points. The Purple Raiders were followed by Ashland, 120; Capital, 85.50; and Cedarville, 65. [COMPLETE RESULTS and PHOTO GALLERY] March 20, at Indiana Wesleyan Invitational Jason Scott, who two weeks earlier earned NAIA Indoor All-America honors by placing 3rd at the national meet, opened the outdoor season by winning the event at the Indiana Wesleyan Invitational and meeting the NAIA automatic qualifying standard. He cleared 15-feet 6-inches to claim the victory at the non-scoring meet. Scott also finished 1st in the 110 meter hurdles in 15.69 seconds. The Yellow Jackets won four other individual events. Chris DeLange won the 400 meters in 50.96 seconds; Joel Smith was 1st in the triple jump at 38-6; Jimmy Sawin cleared six-feet even to win the high jump; and James Yahara won the hammer with a heave of 155-7. March 4-6, at NAIA Indoor Championships Jason Scott earned All-America honors in the pole vault at the NAIA Indoor Championships when he placed 3rd by clearing 15-feet 11-inches. The freshman tied two other athletes for the best effort, but moved to 3rd based on misses. The top six finishers in each event are recognized as All-Americans. Chris DeLange set a school record in the 400 meter dash with a time of 49.95 seconds in the semifinals. Joel Smith tied for 9th place in the high jump by clearing 6-7.50. Tim Beck placed 10th in the long jump (22-11.25), Dan Campbell was 10th in the 5,000 meter final (16:00.99), and James Yahara finished 17th in the weight throw (51-8.25). Ryan Bundenthal was 22nd in the 55 meter hurdles in 8.12 seconds. [COMPLETE RESULTS] Feb. 21, at NCCAA Indoor Nationals Tim Beck won the long jump and Dan Campbell repeated as the 5,000 meter champion to lead a group of 12 All-Americans from Cedarville at the NCCAA Indoor Championships. Greenville won the team title with 184 points, the Yellow Jackets were 2nd with 113.5, and Malone was 3rd at 93.5. Beck set meet and school records in winning the long jump at 23-feet 8-inches. That performance added 3/4 of an inch to the mark he set two weeks ago. Campbell was a winner in the 5K in 15:30.15. Jason Scott heads a list of Cedarville's other All-Americans (top three finishers) by placing 2nd in the pole vault at 15-feet even. That mark met the NAIA automatic qualifying standard. James Yahara was 2nd in the weight throw (48-10.5), Chris DeLange placed 2nd in the 400 meters (51.03), and Mark Swan was 2nd in the 800 (2:01.50). The event was a non-scoring meet. Jason Scott finished 4th in the pole vault by clearing 14-feet 5.25-inches. Mark Swan placed 4th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:01.37. Joel Smith was 5th in the high jump by clearing 6-feet 6.75-inches. Tim Beck came in 5th in the long jump with a leap of 22-8.50. [COMPLETE RESULTS] Feb. 7, at DePauw Indoor Invitational Tim Beck shattered one of Cedarville's oldest records and set a new meet record in the process while winning the long jump at the DePauw Invitational. His leap of 23-feet 7.25-inches eclipsed the previous record of 22-9.75 set by Barrett Luketic in 1974. Joel Smith cleared 6-8 to win the high jump and set another meet record. Chris DeLange finished 3rd in the 400 meter dash in 52.11 seconds. Jason Scott was 3rd in the pole vault with an effort of 14-6 and James Yahara was 4th in the weight throw with a toss of 49-2.50. He placed 7th in the event at the non-scoring meet with a heave of 51-feet 11-inches to become the first Yellow Jacket this season to qualify for the NAIA Indoor Championships. Dan Campbell placed 6th out of 50 competitors in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:04.99. Chris DeLange and Joel Smith tied for 6th in the high jump after clearing 6-feet 4.75-inches. Justin Mattern finished in a 6th-place tie in the pole vault at 12-11.50. Jason Scott was 7th in the 55 meter hurdles in 8.03 seconds. [COMPLETE RESULTS] Jan. 23, at Ohio Northern The Yellow Jackets returned to Ohio Northern for the second straight week and finished 4th out of eight schools. Findlay won the meet with 185 points and was followed by Tiffin, 135; Ohio Northern, 74; and Cedarville, 57. Ben Shroyer had CU's highest finish by placing 2nd in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:09.76. Chris DeLange, Joel Smith, and Jimmy Sawin all tied for 3rd in the high jump by clearing 6-feet 1.25-inches. DeLange was also 4th in the 400 meters (52.79) and teamed with Ryan Bundenthal, Matt Clark, and Adam Laskos to place 4th in the 4 x 400 meter relay (3:37.74). Kevin Hall was 3rd in the 1,000 meters (2:38.26) while Justin Mattern was 3rd in the pole vault (14-0). [COMPLETE RESULTS] Jan. 16, at Ohio Northern Tim Beck won the long jump and was part of the victorious 4 x 400 meter relay team as Cedarville opened the indoor season by placing 3rd at Ohio Northern. Tiffin won the eight-team event with 180 points while the host Polar Bears were 2nd with 115.83 and CU was next with 88.83. Beck won the long jump with a leap of 22-feet 4.25-inches. He also joined Adam Laskos, Ryan Bundenthal, and Chris DeLange to win the 4 x 400 meter relay in 3:33.48. DeLange and Joel Smith tied for second in the high jump after clearing six-feet even. Dan Campbell finished 2nd in the 5,000 meters in 16:03.06.
