2003-04 Game Recaps March 16, Morningside (NAIA Division II National Tournament - Championship) Morningside buried an NAIA Division II National Tournament record 17 three-point baskets and defeated Cedarville, 87-74, in the 13th annual championship game. The Mustangs, whose campus is located in the host city of Sioux City, used the momentum generated by a partisan crowd of 5,200 to win their first-ever national title. The Lady Jackets, who had their 23-game winning streak snapped, scored the first basket of the game for their only lead of the night. Morningside answered with back-to-back three-pointers to get their record-setting night started. Cedarville rallied from a 26-14 first-half deficit to tie the game at 35-35 with 26 seconds left in the period. The Mustangs knocked down their ninth trey at the buzzer for a three-point halftime lead. The Jackets were slow to get going in the second half by misfiring on their first five field goal attempts. Morningside hit six more threes in the first eight minutes of the period to set the tournament record and led 64-45 with still 12:01 to play. CU got as close as 77-67 at the 2:58 mark. Kari Flunker scored 16 points and dished out six assists. Emily Delimpo finished with a double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds while Brittany Smart came off the bench with 15 points. Flunker was presented the Hustle Award and also earned a spot on the 2004 All-Tournament First Team while Smart was selected to the Second Team. Seniors Julie Stauffer, Molly Earley, and Jamie Huffman ended their CU careers with 98 victories to their credit. Stauffer finished 6th on the school's all-time scoring list (1,656) and tied for 1st in assists (467) while Early finished 9th all-time in rebounding (798). [STATS] March 15, Hastings (NAIA Division II National Tournament - Semifinals) Kari Flunker and Brittany Smart combined for 54 points to lead Cedarville to an 82-74 victory over two-time defending champion Hastings in the 13th Annual NAIA Division II National Tournament semifinals. The win advances the Lady Jackets, winners of 23 consecutive games, to their first-ever NAIA national championship game. The Jackets got the quick start they needed and never trailed after jumping out to a 9-0 lead in the first four minutes. The largest advantage of the night was 28-14 at the 5:25 mark of the first half and the difference was 40-30 by halftime. Hastings, who had a 13-game winning streak in national tournament games snapped, charged back to within 44-41 with 17:04 to go. Emily Delimpo answered with a three-point play and Flunker followed with a three-pointer to push the lead back to nine. The Broncos got as close as five points before CU put the game away after matching their largest lead of the night, 73-59, with 4:21 remaining. Flunker totaled 29 points, five assists, and three steals in the victory. Smart tallied 25 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Julie Stauffer scored 11 points and moved into 6th place on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,653 points. [STATS] March 13, Concordia NE (NAIA Division II National Tournament - Quarterfinals) Brittany Smart came off the bench with a double-double of 22 points with 11 rebounds, and the Lady Jackets used a 19-point second-half run to beat Concordia (Neb.), 77-69, in the quarterfinals of the 13th Annual NAIA Division II National Tournament. CU's school-record 22nd straight victory gives them their first-ever Final Four appearance. Cedarville struggled from the outset by surrendering the game's first seven points and falling behind 12-2. It looked like the Jackets regained the momentum when Kari Flunker banked in a 45-foot heave at the halftime buzzer to cut the deficit to 40-37. However, the Lady Bulldogs increased their lead back to 54-45 with 16:05 left. The Lady Jackets took the lead for good by going off with 19 unanswered points over the next eight minutes. CU held on for the win by hitting 20-of-22 free throws including an 11-for-12 showing by Smart. Emily Delimpo finished with 14 points while Julie Stauffer recorded 13. [STATS] March 12, Ozarks (NAIA Division II National Tournament - Second Round) Kari Flunker scored a career-high 30 points to pace the Lady Jackets to a convincing 82-65 win versus Ozarks in the second round of the 13th Annual NAIA Division II National Tournament. The result, which ties Cedarville's school record for consecutive victories at 21 straight, pushes the Jackets into the quarterfinals for the first time in the program's history. CU used its fast-break offense to sprint to a 47-31 halftime lead. They were able to keep the difference at double digits throughout the second half and the Jackets outrebounded the Lady Bobcats 53-35 for the contest. Brittany Smart netted 15 points and handed out a game-high six assists. Emily Delimpo posted a double-double of 13 points and 15 rebounds while Julie Stauffer chipped in 12 points. [STATS] March 10, Maine-Fort Kent (NAIA Division II National Tournament - First Round) Top-seeded Cedarville bolted to a 20-point halftime lead and cruised to a 79-38 victory over Maine-Fort Kent to open play at the 13th Annual NAIA Division II National Tournament. It was the fewest points allowed in one game this season by the Lady Jackets, who picked up their 20th straight win. Cedarville overcame a sluggish start and took a 45-25 halftime lead. The Jackets allowed just three field goals in the second half while outscoring the Bengals 34-13 to make the outcome a blowout. Brittany Smart came off the bench to lead four players in double figures with 13 points. Kristi Beougher, Emily Delimpo, and Kari Flunker contributed 12 points apiece. [STATS] Feb. 28, DAEMEN (AMC Championship Game) Kari Flunker scored 26 points as the NAIA Division II No. 2 Lady Jackets repeated as American Mideast Conference champions with a 75-60 victory over No. 20 Daemen. It was Cedarville's 19th straight win and the outcome ended the visiting Wildcats' 16-game win streak. The Jackets overcame a six-point deficit in the first half to lead 38-35 at the intermission despite shooting just 33 percent from the field. Cedarville took control by scoring the first 13 points of the second half and they built the difference to as much as 58-41 at the 9:45 mark. Daemen got as close as 64-57 with 4:20 to play coming down the stretch. Emily Delimpo tallied a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. Julie Stauffer had 13 points while Karah Walton chipped in 10. Daemen outrebounded the Jackets, 46-35, but committed 33 turnovers to just 12 for CU. [STATS] Feb. 21, SHAWNEE STATE Kari Flunker poured in a 28 points and NAIA Division II No. 3 Cedarville completed a perfect run through the American Mideast Conference South Division with a 72-68 win over No. 10 Shawnee State. It was the 18th straight victory for the Lady Jackets, who have run off 33 AMC wins in a row. CU never trailed after scoring the first five points of the game and it was 32-23 at the intermission. The visiting Bears came out of the blocks with nine straight points to begin the second period to forge the only tie of the contest. The Jackets responded with 14 unanswered points and built the difference to as much as 16, but SSU closed the gap to 68-66 with 1:25 left before Flunker hit a jumper with a minute to go to provide some breathing room. Flunker nailed 11-of-17 shots from the field, including a 6-for-10 showing outside the three-point line, with four assists and four steals. Brittany Smart and Emily Delimpo scored 12 points each and Karah Walton chipped in 10. [STATS] Feb. 17, RIO GRANDE Kari Flunker recorded 17 points, five assists, and five steals to lead NAIA Division II No. 3 Cedarville to a 93-59 victory over Rio Grande in an American Mideast Conference South Division game. The Lady Jackets ran their winning streak to 17 in a row. The two teams each shot 48 percent from the field in the first half, but CU held a 46-35 lead at the intermission. The Jackets built the margin to 20 in the first 2:30 of the second half and led by as much as 38 points. Cedarville made 16-of-24 shots for 67 percent in the final period while the Redwomen converted on just 6-of-30 attempts. Brittany Smart finished with 16 points while Julie Stauffer scored 13. The Lady Jackets put together a 42-31 rebounding margin with Kristi Beougher pulling down a game-high nine boards. Flunker made two three-pointers to up her total to 76 and break her own school record for the most treys made in a single season. She has the three-highest marks in school history with 74 made last year and 70 converted during her freshman campaign. [STATS] Feb. 14, at Walsh Kari Flunker scored 22 points, including six in overtime, as NAIA Division II No. 3 Cedarville escaped Walsh, 75-66, in American Mideast Conference South Division play. It was the 16th straight win for the Lady Jackets, who posted a 9-0 AMC road record for the second consecutive season. Walsh had every opportunity to hand Cedarville its first conference loss of the year. The Cavaliers jumped out to a 21-7 lead and clung to a 29-25 halftime advantage. They pushed the difference to 10 points before the Jackets rallied for a 45-41 edge with 9:15 left. Walsh regained the lead with a minute to go and Flunker's 10-footer from the lane with 40 seconds remaining knotted the score at 64-64. The Cavs missed two quality shots in the final 8 seconds to win it, and then CU scored the first 11 points of the overtime to clinch the victory. Emily Delimpo finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds while Brittany Smart came off the bench with 13 points. The Jackets, who lead NAIA Division II in rebounding margin, had a 49-44 advantage on the boards. [STATS] Feb. 10, URBANA Kari Flunker racked up 17 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists to lead the NAIA Division II No. 3 Lady Jackets to a 66-50 win over Urbana and their second straight American Mideast Conference South Division title. Cedarville earns an automatic berth to the NAIA Division II National Tournament and will host North Division champ Daemen in the AMC championship game on Feb. 28. CU made it through a sluggish first period for a 28-22 halftime lead. The Jackets scored 10 unanswered points early in the second half for a 43-27 bulge. The Blue Knights could get no closer than 10 points the rest of the way as Cedarville went on to its 15th consecutive victory. Brittany Smart scored 13 points while Emily Delimpo added 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Jackets had a 50-28 rebounding advantage and held Urbana to 32 percent shooting for the game. [STATS] Feb. 7, TIFFIN Molly Earley scored 15 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to lead NAIA Division II No. 5 Cedarville to a 71-53 win over Tiffin in American Mideast Conference South Division action. The Lady Jackets' 14th consecutive victory secured themselves at least a tie for the divisional title. Cedarville never trailed as they carried a 31-22 lead into the halftime lockerroom. A 12-2 start to the second half pushed the bulge to 19. After the Dragons closed to within six with 8:35 left, the Jackets scored 11 unanswered points to secure the outcome. Emily Delimpo produced a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Kari Flunker netted 11 points with eight assists and Karah Walton chipped in 10 points. The Yellow Jackets posted a 50-35 rebounding advantage. They also held Tiffin to 33 percent shooting from the field. [STATS AND PHOTO GALLERY] Feb. 5, at Shawnee State Brittany Smart fired in 27 points and NAIA Division II No. 5 Cedarville held off No. 13 Shawnee State, 85-80, in an American Mideast Conference South Division game. It was the Lady Jackets' 13th consecutive victory. Cedarville matched a school-record with 13 three-point baskets for the game and nine of those came in the opening 20 minutes as the visitors opened up a 47-36 halftime lead. Another bomb early in the second half gave the Jackets their largest advantage at 52-38. However, the host Bears rallied and got as close as two points three times in the second period. The last time was 77-75 with 1:27 left. CU outscored Shawnee State 8-3 to finish the contest. Smart, who was 7-for-7 at the charity stripe, made four free throws in the final 37 seconds. Kari Flunker was the only other player to score in double figures and tallied 17 points. The Jackets had a slim 38-36 rebounding edge and converted 16-21 free throws. The school record-tying 13 three-pointers came on 21 attempts for 62 percent. [STATS] Jan. 31, at Mount Vernon Nazarene NAIA Division II No. 5 Cedarville sprinted to a 42-point halftime lead and coasted to a 102-53 victory at Mount Vernon Nazarene to remain unbeaten in the American Mideast Conference South Division. It was the 12th consecutive victory for the Lady Jackets. CU scored the first 12 points of the game and the final 17 points of the half while limiting the Cougars to just four field goals in the period for a 54-12 advantage.. The Jackets proceeded to shoot 60 percent from the floor in the second half as the lead swelled to as much as 53 points. Molly Earley scored 16 points to pace five players in double figures. Emily Delimpo posted a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds while freshman Kristi Beougher followed suit with 12 points and 10 boards. Kari Flunker scored 12 points with seven assists and Karah Walton chipped in 10 points. The Jackets controlled the boards, 51-29 and forced 27 turnovers. [STATS] Jan. 29, OHIO DOMINICAN Brittany Smart scored 20 points to lead NAIA Division II No. 5 Cedarville to a 88-65 victory over Ohio Dominican in an American Mideast Conference South Division game. It was the 11th straight victory for the Lady Jackets and their 19th in a row in the Callan Athletic Center since ODU knocked them off at home last year. Cedarville outscored the Panthers 18-8 in the final 6:30 of the first half for a 43-30 lead at the break. The Jackets opened the second half with 12 straight points and then upped the advantage to as much as 32 points midway through the period. Emily Delimpo finished with a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Kari Flunker netted 10 points with seven assists while Karah Walton added seven assists. CU outrebounded Ohio Dominican, 43-22, made 18-of-25 shots for 72 percent in the second half, ended the game shooting 59 percent overall, and was 9-of-18 outside the three-point line. [STATS and PHOTO GALLERY] Jan. 24, at Malone Tami Gheen came off the bench to key a second-half run that carried NAIA Division II No. 6 Cedarville to a 78-68 win at Malone in American Mideast Conference South Division action. It's the second time this season the Lady Jackets have a assembled a 10-game winning streak. Cedarville fell into a nine-point hole midway through the first half and used an 11-point spurt to get back in it. The Pioneers had a 37-36 advantage at the break. The hosts still had the edge, 50-48, five minutes into the second period when Gheen stepped up. Her three-pointer gave the Jackets the lead for good at the 14:15 mark and she buried another trey four minutes later to complete a 15-2 run that placed CU in control. Emily Delimpo scored a game-high 19 points to lead the way while Kari Flunker finished with 17. Gheen hit 3-of-4 shots from behind the three-point line and tallied 10 points. [STATS] Jan. 22, at Wilberforce Brittany Smart scored 14 points to lead a balanced attack as the NAIA Division II No. 6 Lady Jackets won for the ninth straight time with a 75-57 decision at Wilberforce in American Mideast Conference South Division action. Cedarville, who blasted the Bulldogs by 49 points just two weeks earlier, struggled to put away their Greene County rival this time. The Jackets made 16-of-22 shots from the field for 73 percent in the first half, but they held just a 38-27 lead at the break. They continued their hot shooting in the second half and finished at 67 percent for the game overall and 13-for-15 at the charity stripe. The largest difference was 21 points. Kari Flunker made all five of her field goals and both of her free throws for 12 points. Emily Delimpo and Tami Gheen finished with 11 points each. [STATS] Jan. 20, at Urbana Emily Delimpo scored a career-high 23 points to lead NAIA Division II No. 6 Cedarville to an 87-72 win at Urbana in an American Mideast Conference South Division contest. It's the eighth consecutive win for Cedarville and the third straight 20-win season under head coach Kirk Martin. The Jackets never trailed after scoring the first 11 points of the game, but the Blue Knights refused to fold. A 38-34 halftime lead swelled to 50-38 in the first five minutes of the second period. Urbana charged back to within 55-54 at the 11:00 mark, but an eight-point spurt put Cedarville back in control and the hosts never got closer than seven the rest of the way. Brittany Smart came off the bench to add 16 points. Karah Walton scored 13 points and blocked four shots, Molly Earley posted a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds, and Kari Flunker chipped in 10 points. The outcome also extended the Lady Jackets' homecourt winning streak to 18 in a row. Walsh held a 28-22 lead with 10 minutes left in the first half. CU finished the period with a 25-4 run, including one stretch of 19 unanswered points, for a 47-32 halftime lead. The Cavaliers got as close as 11 points early in the second half, but the Jackets pulled away again and led by as much as 31 points late in the game. It was the sixth straight win for the Lady Jackets. Cedarville let a 37-32 halftime lead dissolve to a 38-38 tie early in the second half. That's when Flunker took over. The 5-foot-7 junior, who scored 20 points in the period including a 5-for-6 showing outside the three-point line, ignited a 12-point spurt with a lay-up. By the time she hit her fifth trey to complete her second-half scoring, CU enjoyed a 74-51 bulge. The difference reached as much as 28 points with 4:30 left. Flunker added six assists and three steals to her night. Emily Delimpo had 17 points and eight rebounds while Brittany Smart came off the bench with 14 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Molly Earley pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds. [STATS] Jan. 10, at Tiffin Kari Flunker scored 21 points and NAIA Division II No. 7 Cedarville pulled away from Tiffin in the second half for a 77-63 American Mideast Conference South Division win. It was the fifth straight victory for the Lady Jackets. Cedarville held a 41-40 halftime lead. A 14-5 run in the first five minutes of the second half pushed the margin to nine points. The host Dragons snuck back within three points midway through final period before a six-point run put the Jackets back in control. Brittany Smart scored 14 points, Julie Stauffer had 13, and Karah Walton chipped in 11. The Jackets made their first 14 free throws of the game and finished 24-for-25 at the charity stripe. [STATS] Jan. 8, WILBERFORCE NAIA Division II No. 7 Cedarville raced to a 30-point halftime lead and went on to beat Wilberforce, 104-55, in an American Mideast Conference South Division game. All 12 Lady Jackets played and scored as CU won for the 17th straight time at home. Cedarville never trailed after scoring the opening five points of the game and 13 of the first 15. The largest advantage was 51 points late in the contest and it was the second time this season the Jackets have surpassed the century mark in the scoring column. Molly Earley scored a season-high 16 points to lead five players in double figures. Brittany Smart posted a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Karah Walton tallied 14 points while Julie Stauffer and Emily Delimpo netted 13 apiece. [STATS] Jan. 3, MOUNT VERNON NAZARENE Kari Flunker scored 17 points and NAIA Division II No. 7 Cedarville overcame a slow start to put away Mount Vernon Nazarene, 87-61, in an American Mideast Conference South Division game. It was the 16th straight home victory for the Lady Jackets. The visiting Cougars held an 18-11 lead nine minutes into the contest. But, CU responded with a 30-6 run to finish the half for a 41-24 advantage. The bulge swelled to as much as 30 points in the second period. Julie Stauffer had 13 points, Karah Walton scored 12, and Brittany Smart chipped in 11. Cedarville had a 47-36 rebounding edge and committed 10 fewer turnovers. [STATS] Dec. 20, Georgetown (at Webber International Classic) Kari Flunker's 20 points paced NAIA Division II No. 7 Cedarville to an impressive 76-52 victory over Division I No. 14 Georgetown in the third and final day of the Webber International Classic. The Lady Jackets used a balanced attack to take immediate control and they opened up a commanding 40-22 halftime advantage. CU held the Tigers off in the second half while rolling to their 12th victory in the last 13 games. Brittany Smart scored 11 points while Julie Stauffer and Emily Delimpo added 10 points each. The contest completed a 50-game string over the past two seasons for the Lady Jackets in which they've posted a 45-5 record. [STATS] Dec. 19, at Webber International (at Webber International Classic) Julie Stauffer poured in 22 points and NAIA Division II No. 7 Cedarville used some late-game heroics to edge Webber International, 94-87 in overtime, in the second round of the Webber International Classic. The Lady Jackets appeared headed to their second straight loss when they were trailing 74-72 with just two seconds left and the ball out of bounds on the sideline near their bench. Emily Delimpo, who finished with 17 points, was fouled on the inbounds play and made both free throws to send the game into overtime which CU controlled from the opening tip. Kari Flunker and Brittany Smart came through with 21 points apiece. The Jackets have not dropped back-to-back games since the final two contests of the 2001-02 season. [STATS] Dec. 18, Evangel (at Webber International Classic) NAIA Division II No. 12 Evangel pulled away in the final minute for a 78-72 victory over No. 7 Cedarville in the first round of the Webber International Classic. The outcome ended the Lady Jackets' 10-game winning streak. The contest was close throughout with the two teams tied, 38-38, at halftime. CU broke away for an eight-point lead early in the second half, but the Crusaders quickly closed the gap and it remained tight coming down the stretch. Kari Flunker made all nine of her shots from the field, including three treys, and scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Jackets. Brittany Smart had 18 points and Julie Stauffer added 16. [STATS] Dec. 16, at Spring Arbor Julie Stauffer scored 20 points to lead NAIA Division II No. 7 Cedarville to a 82-68 non-conference win at Spring Arbor for the Lady Jackets' 10th consecutive victory. Cedarville let a 48-35 halftime lead slip to four points with 12 minutes left. However, the Jackets quickly got the difference back to double digits and it swelled to as much as 20 points late in the period. Brittany Smart tallied 13 points while Tami Gheen netted 11. Kari Flunker produced a double-double consisting of 10 points and 13 rebounds to go along with six assists. Emily Delimpo had 9 points and 11 boards for the Jackets, who outrebounded Spring Arbor, 47-38. [STATS] Dec. 13, at Ohio Dominican Julie Stauffer scored a game-high 22 points and NAIA Division II No. 7 Cedarville rolled out to a big first half lead during a 96-68 victory at Ohio Dominican in American Mideast Conference South Division action. It was the ninth straight win for the Lady Jackets. Kari Flunker and Stauffer opened the game with back-to-back three-pointers and CU never trailed. It was 58-31 by halftime and the bulge grew to as much as 32 points midway through the second period. Flunker had 14 points and seven assists while Emily Delimpo added 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Brittany Smart chipped in 12 points for the Jackets, who shot 56.7 percent from the field and they outrebounded the Panthers, 48-30. [STATS] Dec. 4, MARIAN Julie Stauffer scored 19 points to lead the NAIA Division II No. 7 Lady Jackets to an 85-64 non-conference win over Marian for their seventh consecutive victory. Cedarville raced out to a 43-19 halftime lead to take command. The Jackets broke an 8-8 tie with a 28-3 run over a 12-minute span. The hosts shot 58 percent from the field in the first half while the Knights converted just 6-of-29 shots for 21 percent. The difference was never under 20 points in the second half. Brittany Smart netted 17 points and Kari Flunker fired in 16. Emily Delimpo finished with a double-double of 10 points and 14 rebounds. [STATS] Dec. 2, at Ursuline Freshman Brittany Smart piled up a double-double consisting of 22 points and a career-high 14 rebounds to lead NAIA Division II No. 7 Cedarville to a 92-50 victory at Ursuline. It's the sixth straight victory for the Lady Jackets. It was a slow start for CU. The Jackets relinquished the final five points of the first half for a 33-21 lead at the intermission. However, a 32-9 explosion to begin the second half blew the contest open as Cedarville shot 55 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes including a 9-for-16 effort behind the three-point line. Emily Delimpo scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Karah Walton came off the bench with 12 points and Kari Flunker chipped in 11. [STATS] Nov. 22, at Grace (at Grace Invitational) Tournament MVP Kari Flunker and all-tournament selection Brittany Smart scored 14 points to lead NAIA Division II No. 5 Cedarville to a 70-51 victory at Grace in the final of the Lancers' own tournament. It's the fifth straight win for the Lady Jackets. Cedarville took control with a 36-22 halftime lead and held a 47-35 rebounding edge for the game. The Jackets checked Grace on just 14 field goals total in 54 attempts for 26 percent. Emily Delimpo was the only other CU player to score in double figures with 10 points. Flunker added team-highs of nine rebounds and seven assists to her totals. [STATS] Nov. 21, Siena Heights (at Grace Invitational) Brittany Smart netted 20 points to lead NAIA Division II No. 5 Cedarville to an easy 105-65 win over Siena Heights in the first round of the Grace Invitational. CU blitzed the Saints with 58-percent shooting for the game and a 52-31 rebounding advantage. The Jackets sprinted to a 51-30 halftime lead and never looked back while picking up their fourth straight victory. Smart was one of three players to grab a team-high six rebounds and she led the squad with five assists and four steals. Kari Flunker tossed in 19 points, Emily Delimpo added 18, and Tami Gheen chipped in 11. [STATS] Nov. 18, CENTRAL STATE Freshman Brittany Smart scored a career-high 29 points and the Lady Jackets played their best defense of the young season to beat Greene County rival Central State, 70-57, in a non-conference game. It was the 29th meeting between the two schools which are located just four miles apart. Cedarville, ranked No. 5 in NAIA Division II, took the lead for good with nine minutes left in the first half and increased it to 37-27 by halftime. The Lady Marauders got as close as four points midway through the second period, but an 11-4 spurt by the Jackets kept them in control down the stretch. Smart canned 14-of-18 free throws and was just two charity tosses short of tying the school record for most attempts in a game. Emily Delimpo finished with 12 points and eight rebounds, Kari Flunker netted 10 points with five assists, and Molly Earley grabbed eight boards and had five steals. The Jackets shot just 34 percent from the field, but their defensive effort held CSU to 33 percent. [STATS] Nov. 15, at Huntington (at Huntington Invitational) Kari Flunker poured in 26 points and NAIA Division II No. 5 Cedarville raced out to a 25-point halftime lead en route to a 90-76 win at Huntington in the finals of the Foresters' own tournament. The Jackets shot 59 percent from the field in the first half and held a comfortable 47-22 lead at the break. Huntington got as close as 13 points in the second half despite Cedarville shooting 60 percent over the final 20 minutes. Karah Walton scored 15 points, tournament MVP Brittany Smart netted 13, and Molly Earley chipped in 11. Flunker joined Smart on the all-tournament team. [STATS] Nov. 14, Madonna (at Huntington Invitational) Brittany Smart scored 15 of her career-high 20 points in the final eight minutes to spark the NAIA Division II No. 5 Lady Jackets to an 80-72 win over Madonna in the first round of the Huntington Invitational. CU struggled the entire game to shake loose from the Crusaders, who sported a 35-30 halftime lead. They still had a one-point lead with 8:30 left when Smart, who made her first start of the season, took over. She scored 15 of the team's last 24 points including four free throws in the final 1:10 to clinch it. Kari Flunker tallied 18 points and handed out six assists. Julie Stauffer chipped in 11 points. [STATS] Nov. 11, at Taylor Taylor scored the final eight points in overtime and knocked off the NAIA Division II No. 5 Lady Jackets, 101-92, in a non-conference game that saw junior guard Kari Flunker score her 1,000th career point. The Trojans trailed for most of the contest before rallying in the final minutes of regulation. Cedarville fell into a 10-2 hole in the opening three minutes before getting the offense going. The Jackets led by as much as 46-32, but Taylor closed with a five-point run to cut the deficit to 51-42 at the half. Cedarville maintained control in the second period and had a 70-59 advantage with 10:50 left. The hosts chipped away and finally took the lead at the 4:27 mark. The Jackets needed a Kari Flunker three-pointer with 19 seconds left to force overtime. CU scored the first two points of the extra session and never led again. Flunker finished with a game-high 26 points for the Jackets and became the 12th women's player in school history to surpass 1,000 career points. Molly Earley had 15 points, Brittany Smart netted 14, Julie Stauffer scored 13, and Karah Walton chipped in 12. [STATS] Nov. 8, INDIANA WESLEYAN (Cedarville Invitational) Tournament MVP Emily Delimpo scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the NAIA Division II No. 5 Lady Jackets to a 76-69 victory over No. 24 Indiana Wesleyan in the championship game of the Cedarville Invitational. The hosts outscored the Wildcats 11-2 over the final 2:10 to pull out the victory. Cedarville held a slim 32-30 halftime lead, quickly upped the spread to seven points early in the second half, but found themselves trailing 55-48 with 9:35 left. It was still a 67-65 deficit before the decisive final run. Julie Stauffer, who joined Delimpo on the all-tournament team, finished with 15 points. Brittany Smart came off the bench with 13 points, Molly Earley scored 12 points with nine rebounds, Kari Flunker, who hit four free throws in the last 14 seconds, finished with 11 points and six assists. [STATS] Nov. 7, ROBERTS WESLEYAN (Cedarville Invitational) Julie Stauffer scored 16 points to lead six players in double figures and the NAIA Division II No. 5 Lady Jackets rolled to a 102-63 win over Roberts Wesleyan in the first round of the Cedarville Invitational. The Jackets took the lead for good at the 17:30 mark of the first half and never looked back. The difference was 47-23 by halftime and got as big as 41 points in the final minute. Kari Flunker fired in 15 points, Emily Delimpo registered 14 points and a game-high eight rebounds, and Tami Gheen netted 14 points. Freshman point guard Karah Walton had 12 points with five assists while classmate Brittany Smart scored 10 points and dished out a game-high eight assists. [STATS] |
