2004 Match Recaps May 18, Vanguard (NAIA National Tournament) NAIA No. 3 Vanguard eliminated the No. 21 Lady Jackets from the 23rd Annual NAIA National Women's Tennis Championship with a 6-0 win. Cedarville finishes the season with 18 victories which matches the school record for a single season first set by the 2002 squad. The Lions, 23-2 and seeded No. 4 in the tounament, took the early lead by winning all three doubles matches. They won #3, #5, and #6 singles before the other three matches were halted. [RESULTS] May 17, Shorter (NAIA National Tournament) NAIA No. 21 Cedarville edged No. 13 Shorter, 5-4, in the first round of the 23rd Annual NAIA National Women's Tennis Championship. It's the first time ever for the Lady Jackets to advance to the second round. CU caught a break well before the match was played when it was revealed the Lady Hawks' top player was unable to play due to an injury. That development gave the Jackets forfeit victories at #3 doubles for Carrie Hartman and Courtney Ruffin as well as another point at #6 singles for Jolene Nourse. Kathryn Whaling and Jodi Kraker won their #1 doubles match, 8-4. Hartman was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at #5 singles and Sarah Rogers clinched the outcome with a 6-2, 6-1 decision at #4 singles. [RESULTS] May 12, Palm Beach Atlantic (NCCAA National Tournament) Palm Beach Atlantic overcame an opening day setback to NAIA No. 21 Cedarville to beat the Lady Jackets, 5-3, in the NCCAA championship match. The decision ended CU's nine-match winning streak. Cedarville managed just one point coming out of doubles. Carrie Hartman and Courtney Ruffin won their match at the #3 position by an 8-6 score. PBA, who had lost to the Lady Jackets two days earlier, 5-3, won the top three singles matches to clinch the title. The Jackets' victories came from #4 Sarah Rogers, 6-3, 6-1, and #5 Hartman, 6-0, 6-2. Jolene Nourse was leading her #6 singles match, 7-6, 4-2, when it was halted since the overall outcome was decided. Sarah Rogers was presented the NCCAA Sportsmanship Award. It's the second straight year it has been presented to a CU athlete since Carrie Hartman won it last spring. [RESULTS] May 11, Piedmont (NCCAA National Tournament) NAIA No. 21 Cedarville will play for the NCCAA championship after defeating Piedmont, 5-0, in the semifinals. The Lady Jackets have won nine straight matches. Cedarville took control by winning all three doubles matches. Kathryn Whaling and Jodi Kraker had the easiest match by posting an 8-0 decision. The other winning tandems were Beth Staten and Sarah Rogers (8-6) and Carrie Hartman and Courtney Ruffin (8-4). Whaling and Rogers wrapped up the contest by winning their singles matches. Whaling was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at the #1 spot while #4 Rogers had a 6-4, 6-0 win. [RESULTS] May 10, Emmanuel (NCCAA National Tournament) The NAIA No. 21 Lady Jackets had little problem with Emmanuel with a 9-0 victory in opening day action at the NCCAA Nationals. They started off by sweeping the doubles. Kathryn Whaling and Jodi Kraker (8-0), Beth Staten and Sarah Rogers (8-3), and Carrie Hartman and Courtney Ruffin (8-0) scored the points. Cedarville won all six singles matches in straight sets. Notching the wins were Whaling, Kraker, Hartman, Jolene Nourse, Katie Krumeich, and Colleen Derry. [RESULTS] May 10, Palm Beach Atlantic (NCCAA National Tournament) NAIA No. 21 Cedarville opened play at the NCCAA National Tournament with a 5-3 victory over Palm Beach Atlantic. CU took a 2-1 lead coming out of doubles. Beth Staten and Sarah Rogers won by an 8-5 count while Carrie Hartman and Courtney Ruffin pulled off an 8-6 victory. The Jackets clinched the win with straight-set singles victories at the bottom three positions. The winners were #4 Rogers, 7-5, 7-5; #5 Hartman, 6-0, 7-5; and #6 Jolene Nourse, 6-1, 6-0 [RESULTS] May 7, Walsh (NAIA Region IX Championship) NAIA No. 21 Cedarville won the NAIA Region IX championship for the third straight year with a convincing 7-2 victory over Walsh. The outcome sends the Lady Jackets to the 24th Annual NAIA National Championships in Mobile, Ala. beginning May 17. Inclement weather forced the title match indoors, but CU responded by sweeping the doubles. Kathryn Whaling and Jodi Kraker rolled to an 8-3 win, Beth Staten and Sarah Rogers held on for an 8-6 decision, and Carrie Hartman and Courtney Ruffin doubled up their opponents, 8-4. The Jackets clinched the win with four singles victories. Whaling led the way with a 7-5, 6-2 win at the #1 spot while #5 Hartman was a straight-set winner, 6-0, 6-2. Staten, at #3 singles, and #4 Rogers both had to rally to take their matches. Staten won by 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 scores and Rogers came back by the count of 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. [RESULTS] May 6, Ohio Dominican (NAIA Region IX Semifinals) The NAIA No. 21 Lady Jackets were pushed to the limit in their NAIA Region IX semifinal match with Ohio Dominican before prevailing, 5-4. Two-time defending champion Cedarville moves on to face Walsh in the championship match for the fifth consecutive year. Two weeks ago to the day, the Jackets polished off ODU 7-2 to clinch the AMC South Division title. This time, the Panthers were ready and nearly shocked CU. With the score tied at 4-4, it came down to the #6 singles match where Jolene Nourse rallied for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory. Cedarville came out of doubles with a 2-1 edge. The #2 team of Beth Staten and Sarah Rogers posted a convincing 8-0 decision while the #3 unit of Carrie Hartman and Courtney Ruffin recorded an 8-3 triumph. Other singles points came from #1 Kathryn Whaling, 6-2, 6-1 and #5 Hartman, 6-2, 6-0. [RESULTS] May 3, at Indiana-Southeast NAIA No. 24 Cedarville won two out of three doubles matches and then held off No. 19 Indiana-Southeast for a 5-4 victory in non-conference play. After dropping their season opener at Spring Hill (Ala.), currently ranked No. 21, the Lady Jackets won 12 of their final 13 matches. CU posted doubles points from the #2 team of Beth Staten and Sarah Rogers, who won by a slim 9-8 margin, and by #3 Carrie Hartman and Courtney Ruffin, who were 8-4 winners. The two teams then split the six singles matches down the middle. Lady Jacket #1 Kathryn Whaling bounced back for a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory. CU's other two victories came in straight sets. Rogers won her match at #4 by a 6-3, 6-3 margin and #6 Jolene Nourse registered a 6-1, 6-4 decision. [RESULTS] April 24, at Bethel The NAIA No. 24 Lady Jackets won for the 11th time in their last 12 matches with a 7-2 non-conference decision at Bethel. Cedarville took command after winning all three doubles matches. The top duo of Kathryn Whaling and Jodi Kraker posted an 8-4 victory. The other results included #2 Beth Staten and Sarah Rogers with an 8-3 win and #3 Carrie Hartman and Courtney Ruffin teaming up for an 8-1 outcome. Whaling was a 6-2, 6-1 winner at #1 singles. Cedarville's other four singles points came from #4 Rogers, 6-4, 6-0; #5 Hartman, 6-1, 6-0; and #6 Jolene Nourse, 6-3, 6-3. [RESULTS] April 22, OHIO DOMINICAN NAIA No. 24 Cedarville clinched the American Mideast Conference South Division championship with a 7-2 win versus Ohio Dominican. The victory gives the Lady Jackets a first-round bye in the NAIA Region IX Tournament in Canton on May 5-7. The Jackets have now won 28 of their last 29 conference matches. That one loss was a 5-4 upset to ODU last year which Cedarville avenged in the Region IX event. This time, CU took command early by sweeping the doubles. Kathryn Whaling and Jodi Kraker led the way with an 8-5 win at the #1 spot. Beth Staten and Sarah Rogers rolled to an 8-2 victory while Carrie Hartman and Courtney Ruffin were 8-3 winners. Whaling and Kraker won singles matches in straight sets at the top two positions. Hartman and Jolene Nourse did the same at spots 5 and 6. [RESULTS] April 16, at Walsh The NAIA No. 22 Lady Jackets registered a key 6-3 American Mideast Conference South Division victory at the Walsh. The win keeps Cedarville unbeaten in the league through four matches. The Jackets took a 2-1 lead after doubles. The #2 team of Beth Staten and Sarah Rogers won by an 8-4 count while Carrie Hartman and Courtney Ruffin won their #3 doubles match, 8-2. Cedarville clinched the contest by winning the bottom four singles matches. Staten led the way with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the #3 spot. Other points came from #4 Rogers, 6-2, 6-4; #5 Hartman, 6-2, 6-1; and #6 Jolene Nourse, 6-3, 6-2. [RESULTS] April 13, WITTENBERG Wittenberg brought the Lady Jackets' eight-match winning streak to a halt with a 6-3 win over Cedarville. The non-conference match was played indoors at the Springfield Racquet Club. Rookie Kathryn Whaling played a part in two of CU's three points. She teamed up with Jodi Kraker for a 9-8 victory at #1 doubles. She also won her #1 singles match by a 7-6, 6-3 count. The Jackets' other point came from #5 singles player Carrie Hartman. She won her 54th career match by scores of 7-5, 6-1. [RESULTS] April 8, CENTRAL STATE NAIA No. 22 Cedarville breezed to their eighth consecutive victory with a 9-0 decision versus Central State. The Lady Jackets lost just three games total in the match. Carrie Hartman and Courtney Ruffin moved up to #1 doubles while Kathryn Whaling teamed up with Tamara Ziegler in the #2 position. Jolene Nourse and Katie Krumeich were awarded a forfeit victory at #3 doubles. Cedarville singles winners were Sarah Rogers, Nourse, Ruffin, Krumeich, Amy Pearson, and Ziegler. [RESULTS] April 3, TAYLOR Carrie Hartman became Cedarville's all-time leader in singles victories as the NAIA No. 24 Lady Jackets defeated Taylor, 7-2, in a non-conference match. Hartman won her match at #5 singles by a 6-4, 6-2 score for her 53rd career victory which broke the previous mark of 52 set by 2003 graduate Jen Roman. Hartman, who played at the #2 spot last year, was questionable to even play this spring after suffering a major knee injury in the very first match of the volleyball season last fall. Cedarville held a 2-1 lead after doubles. The #1 pairing of Kathryn Whaling and Jodi Kraker tallied an 8-5 win while Beth Staten and Sarah Rogers took an 8-4 decision at #2. Whaling bounced back from a 6-4 loss in the first set of her #1 singles match and a 4-1 deficit in the third game to pull out a victory. Jolene Nourse, at #6, also rebounded from dropping the first set to win. Other singles victors were Kraker and Rogers. [RESULTS] April 1, at Shawnee State NAIA No. 24 Cedarville rolled to a 9-0 victory at Shawnee State to remain undefeated in the American Mideast Conference South Division. It was also the sixth straight victory for the Lady Jackets. CU won all three doubles matches by 8-0 scores. The pairings were Jodi Kraker and Beth Staten at #1; Sarah Rogers and Jolene Nourse at #2; and Courtney Ruffin and Carrie Hartman at #3. Head coach Pam Johnson kept her top four singles players out of the line-up. Hartman moved up to the top spot and responded with a 6-1, 6-1 win for her 52nd career singles victory which ties her for the all-time lead at Cedarville. Other singles winners were Nourse, Ruffin, Katie Krumeich, Amy Pearson, and Colleen Derry. [RESULTS] March 27, GRACE The NAIA No. 23 Lady Jackets extended their winning streak to five straight matches with an 8-1 non-conference victory over Grace. The match was played indoors at the Springfield Racquet Club. Cedarville took a 2-1 lead after doubles. The #1 pair of Jodi Kraker and Kathryn Whaling posted an 8-2 win while the #3 team of Courtney Ruffin and Carrie Hartman were 8-4 winners. The Jackets wrapped up the match by winning all six singles matches in straight sets. Victories went to Whaling, Kraker, Staten, Rogers, Hartman, and Jolene Nourse. [RESULTS] March 26, at Malone NAIA No. 23 Cedarville remained unbeaten in American Mideast Conference South Division play with an 8-1 victory at Malone. The match was played indoors at the Hall of Fame Fitness Center. The Lady Jackets took control after winning all three doubles matches. Jodi Kraker and Kathryn Whaling registered an 8-1 win at the #1 position. Beth Staten and Sarah Rogers at the #2 spot as well as the #3 team of Courtney Ruffin and Carrie Hartman won by identical 8-2 scores. Whaling moved into the #1 singles position and won her collegiate debut, 6-1, 6-1. Other singles points came from Kraker, Rogers, Hartman, and Jolene Nourse. [RESULTS] March 19, TIFFIN The NAIA No. 23 Lady Jackets opened the American Mideast Conference schedule with a 6-3 victory over Tiffin. The match was played indoors at the Springfield Racquet Club. Cedarville swept the doubles matches before splitting the singles competition. Jodi Kraker and Kathryn Whaling were 8-5 victors at #1 doubles. Beth Staten and Sarah Rogers posted an easy 8-2 win while Courtney Ruffin and Carrie Hartman won 8-3. Singles was much tougher as the Jackets dropped a pair of three-set decisions and a 7-5, 7-5 outcome. Staten needed three sets to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 at the #2 position. Straight-set winners were #3 Rogers and #5 Hartman. [RESULTS] March 18, WILMINGTON Cedarville rolled to a 9-0 non-conference victory over Wilmington in a match played indoors at the Springfield Racquet Club. It was the second straight win for the Lady Jackets. Jodi Kraker and Kathryn Whaling posted an 8-0 win at #1 doubles. Jolene Nourse and Katie Krumeich tallied an 8-2 decision in the #2 position, and Beth Staten and Sarah Rogers were winners by forfeit. Kraker, Staten, Rogers, Nourse, and Carrie Hartman all won singles matches in straight sets. Krumeich was awarded a victory by forfeit. [RESULTS] March 12, at Judson AL The Lady Jackets cruised to a 9-0 victory at Judson for their first win of the 2004 season. CU lost only three games total for the match. Jodi Kraker and Sarah Rogers set the pace with an 8-0 decision at #1 doubles. Beth Staten and Courtney Ruffin won by the same score at the #2 slot while the #3 tandem of Jolene Nourse and Katie Krumeich were 8-1 winners. Nourse, Carrie Hartman, Krumeich, Ruffin, Amy Pearson, and Colleen Derry easily swept the singles matches. [RESULTS] March 11, at Spring Hill Cedarville lost a 9-0 decision at Spring Hill in their season opener. The host Badgers, 7-4, were at mid-season form with their 11th match of the campaign. Spring Hill began by taking all three doubles matches. Jodi Kraker and Sarah Rogers had the closest encounter before dropping a 9-7 outcome at the #1 position.
