NAIA Women's Tennis
The Lady Jackets are all smiles after their first-round victory at the NAIA National Tennis Tournament.

Jackets ousted from NAIA Nationals
MOBILE, Ala. (5-18-2004) - NAIA No. 3 Vanguard eliminated the No. 21 Lady Jackets from the 23rd Annual NAIA National Women's Tennis Championship with a 6-0 win. Cedarville finishes the season with 18 victories which matches the school record for a single season first set by the 2002 squad.

The Lions, 23-2 and seeded No. 4 in the tounament, took the early lead by winning all three doubles matches. They won #3, #5, and #6 singles before the other three matches were halted. [RESULTS]

CU wins NAIA opener
MOBILE, Ala. (5-17-2004) - NAIA No. 21 Cedarville edged No. 13 Shorter, 5-4, in the first round of the 23rd Annual NAIA National Women's Tennis Championship. It's the first time ever for the Lady Jackets to advance to the second round.

CU caught a break well before the match was played when it was revealed the Lady Hawks' top player was unable to play due to an injury. That development gave the Jackets forfeit victories at #3 doubles for Carrie Hartman and Courtney Ruffin as well as another point at #6 singles for Jolene Nourse.

Kathryn Whaling and Jodi Kraker won their #1 doubles match, 8-4. Hartman was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at #5 singles and Sarah Rogers clinched the outcome with a 6-2, 6-1 decision at #4 singles. [RESULTS]

Cedarville edged in NCCAA final
GREER, S.C. (5-12-2004) - Palm Beach Atlantic overcame an opening day setback to NAIA No. 21 Cedarville to beat the Lady Jackets, 5-3, in the NCCAA championship match. The decision ended CU's nine-match winning streak.

Cedarville managed just one point coming out of doubles. Carrie Hartman and Courtney Ruffin won their match at the #3 position by an 8-6 score. PBA, who had lost to the Lady Jackets two days earlier, 5-3, won the top three singles matches to clinch the title. The Jackets' victories came from #4 Sarah Rogers, 6-3, 6-1, and #5 Hartman, 6-0, 6-2. Jolene Nourse was leading her #6 singles match, 7-6, 4-2, when it was halted since the overall outcome was decided.

Sarah Rogers was presented the NCCAA Sportsmanship Award. It's the second straight year it has been presented to a CU athlete since Carrie Hartman won it last spring. [RESULTS]
