May 26-28, at NAIA Outdoor Championship
Joel Smith wrapped up an outstanding high jump season by placing 3rd in the event to earn All-America status at the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The 6-foot-2 junior, who also placed 3rd in the indoor national meet, cleared 6-feet 9.50-inches. Defending pole vault champion Jason Scott struggled to a 7th-place tie with an effort of 16-0.75 and Jason Mattern did not clear the opening height. Scott was the only other CU athlete to score (top 8). Kevin Hall was 10th in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:28.87. He reached the final thanks to a career-best effort of 9:25.30 in his heat of the prelims. Tim Beck placed 15th in both the long jump (21-7.25) and javelin (182-7). Ryan Bundenthal posted a time of 54.48 seconds in the semifinals of the 400 meter hurdles after advancing with a 55.10 effort in the prelims. [COMPLETE RESULTS and PHOTO GALLERY]

May 14, at Baldwin-Wallace Invitational
Defending NAIA outdoor pole vault champion Jason Scott prepped for the upcoming national meet by winning the event at the Baldwin-Wallace All-Ohio Invitational. He cleared 16-feet 0.75-inches to win by more than three inches. Justin Mattern was 4th in the pole vault with a 14-9 effort while Jason Mattern placed 7th at 14-1.25. Adam Laskos finished 3rd in the 400 meter dash in 51.57 seconds and Ryan Bundenthal was 4th in the 400 meter hurdles in 56.04. [COMPLETE RESULTS]

May 12, at Indiana Wesleyan Qualifier
Tim Beck, Kevin Hall, and Jason Scott all won events at the Indiana Wesleyan Qualifier. Beck met the NAIA automatic qualifying mark in the javelin with a toss of 192-feet 7-inches. Hall won the 1,500 meters in a time of 4:05.24 while Scott placed 1st in the pole vault after clearing 14-7. Cedarville had three other athletes in the top six of the javelin. Joel Smith was 2nd (181-8), Jason Scott was 5th (171-5), and Neil Henning was 6th (161-7). Elsewhere, Justin Mattern placed 3rd in the pole vault (14-1), Adam Laskos was 3rd in the 200 meter dash (23.21), and Ryan Bundenthal finished 6th in the 110 meter high hurdles. [COMPLETE RESULTS]

May 5-7, at NCCAA Outdoor Championship
Joel Smith won two events and the Yellow Jackets took 1st place in three others at the National Christian College Athletic Association Championships at Indiana Wesleyan University. Cedarville totaled seven All-America performances which recognizes athletes who finish among the top three in their respective event. Smith cleared 6-feet 9-inches to repeat as the high jump champion by two inches. He grabbed 1st place in the javelin with a heave of 188-9 and also finished 3rd in the triple jump at 44-11. Tim Beck set a school record in winning the long jump at 23-4.75. Ryan Bundenthal won the 110 meter high hurdles in 15 seconds flat and was 3rd in the 400 meter hurdles in 54.26. CU’s other win came from Kevin Hall in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 9:37.0. Elsewhere, Jason Scott met the NAIA automatic qualifying mark in the pole vault with an effort of 16-1 which placed 2nd. He was also 3rd in the 110 meter high hurdles in 15.10. The Jackets’ remaining All-American was Bryan Pittman who placed 3rd in the 10K in 32:14.91. Greenville won the 15-team meet with 155 points. April 22-23, 55th Annual AMERICAN MIDEAST CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP
Cedarville won three events and went on to place 2nd out of 10 teams in the weather-plagued 55th Annual AMC Track & Field Championships staged on campus. Tiffin won the team title for the second straight year with 186 points and was followed by the Yellow Jackets (156) and Malone (143.50) in the standings. The meet dodged Friday’s expected severe thunderstorms, but Saturday’s wintery forecast came through as predicted. The schedule was delayed for 2 ½ hours due to snow. When action resumed, it was completed in blowing rain and 25-35 mph winds that plunged the wind chill into the 20's. Joel Smith, who has gone over 7-feet in the high jump this spring and is ranked No. 1 in the NAIA, won the AMC event at 6-2 before declaring an end to the competition when he was the only jumper left. He was also 2nd in the triple jump (44-3.50). Tim Beck won the javelin with a toss of 157-6, was 2nd in the long jump (22-4.25), and 3rd in the 400 meters (51.39). The 4 x 400 meter relay team of Beck, Adam Laskos, Chris DeLange, and Ryan Bundenthal wrapped up the meet with a victory in 3:29.29. Elsewhere, Justin Mattern was 2nd in the pole vault (15-0) and Jason Scott was 3rd (15-0). Jim Sawin placed 2nd in the high jump (6-0), Scott was 2nd in the 110 meter hurdles (15.95), Bundenthal finished 2nd in the 400 meter hurdles (55.48) and was 3rd in the 110 meter hurdles (16.07), Justin Herbert came in 3rd in the 5K race walk (30:23), and Matt Clark was 3rd in the 1,500 meters (4:09.79). April 16, at Taylor Invitational
Defending NAIA outdoor pole vault champion Jason Scott automatically qualified for the event with his winning effort at the Taylor Invitational. He cleared 15-feet 7-inches to win by six inches and the Yellow Jackets placed 4th out of 13 teams. Ryan Bundenthal won both the 110 meter hurdles (15.35) and the 400 meter hurdles (56.33) while Kevin Hall was a winner in the 1,500 meters (4:00.02). Joel Smith finished 1st in the high jump (6-6) and was 2nd in the javelin (168-7). Justin Mattern placed 3rd in the pole vault (14-6) and Jason Mattern was 5th (14-0). Taylor won the meet with 142 points. Saint Joseph’s tallied 117 points to finish as the runner-up and was followed by Indiana Wesleyan, 104.50; and Cedarville, 98.50. [COMPLETE RESULTS]

April 9, at Miami Invitational
Joel Smith won the high jump competition and Cedarville placed 6th out of 10 teams at the Miami University Invitational. The only schools to beat the Jackets were five NCAA Division I institutions. Smith’s winning leap in the high jump was 6-feet 8.75-inches. He was also 3rd in the triple jump at 44-2.75. Ryan Bundenthal placed 3rd in the 400 meter hurdles in 54.34 seconds, Kevin Hall was 3rd in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 9:31.13, and Tim Beck finished 3rd in the javelin with a heave of 179-7. Cincinnati won the meet with 201.50 points while Kent State was the runner-up with 162 points. The Yellow Jackets totaled 40.50 points. [COMPLETE RESULTS]

April 2, at Emory Classic
Joel Smith broke the school record in the high jump and Cedarville won the team championship at the Emory University Classic. The Yellow Jackets tallied 114.50 points to outscore 17 other schools. Taylor finished 2nd (94.50) and Lindsey Wilson was 3rd (94). Smith’s winning leap in the high jump was 7-feet 1/4-inch which broke the old record of 6-10.75 set by Nate Freeman in 1998. Smith, who automatically qualified for the NAIA Nationals with the effort, also placed 3rd in the triple jump at 44-0.75. Justin Mattern won the pole vault by clearing 14-5.25 while Neil Henning took 1st place in the shot put with a heave of 48-3.50. Other notable CU performances included Jason Scott, 2nd in the pole vault (14-5.25) and 3rd in the 110 meter hurdles (15.53); Ryan Bundenthal, 2nd in the 400 meter hurdles and 4th in the 110 meter hurdles (15.66); Tim Beck, 3rd in the javelin (173-4); Andy Goodenough, 3rd in the 800 meters (1:58.37); Dan Campbell, 3rd in the 5,000 meters (15:31.52); Matt Clark, 4th in the 1,500 meters (4:11.59); Bryan Pittman, 4th in the 10K (33.32.47), and the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Beck, Bundenthal, Adam Laskos, and Goodenough was 4th (3:26.22). March 25, CEDARVILLE OPEN
Jason Scott and Joel Smith each won two events to lead the Yellow Jackets to the team title in the Cedarville Open. CU won the 10-team meet with 159 points and was followed by Anderson (143.50) and Malone (134). Scott won the pole vault by clearing 14-feet even and he was victorious in the 110 meter high hurdles in 15.24 seconds. Smith took 1st place in both the high jump (6-6) and triple jump (43-7). Other Yellow Jackets to win were Tim Beck in the javelin (181-7) and Matt Clark in the 1,500 meters (4:04.43). Elsewhere, Justin Mattern was 2nd in the pole vault (14-0), Jim Sawin placed 2nd in the high jump (6-0), and Ryan Bundenthal was 2nd in the 110 meter high hurdles (15.48) and the 400 meter hurdles (56.47). March 19, at Cincinnati Relays
Cedarville opened the outdoor season by placing 3rd out of 12 schools at the University of Cincinnati Relays. The host Bearcats easily won the meet with 186 points while Ohio Wesleyan was 2nd (63) and the Yellow Jackets were a close 3rd (62). Neil Henning placed 2nd in the shot put with a heave of 46-feet 7.25-inches while Joel Smith was 2nd in the javelin with a toss of 164-feet even. Tim Beck finished 3rd in the javelin (163-10) and 4th in the long jump (22-1.50). In the 110 meter hurdles, Jason Scott was 3rd (15.43) and Ryan Bundenthal was 4th (15.64). March 3-5, at NAIA Indoor Championship
Joel Smith finished 3rd in the high jump and Jason Scott tied for 3rd in the pole vault to highlight Cedarville’s performance at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championship. The Jackets placed 18th as a team out of 86 schools. Smith concluded his outstanding indoor season by clearing a career-best 6-feet 10.75-inches in the high jump. The mark was just 1/4 inch shy of Nate Freeman’s school record set in 1999. Smith was also 17th in the triple jump with a leap of 45-2.50. Scott, the defending NAIA outdoor pole vault champion, went 15-9 to end up in a four-way log jam for 3rd place. It was his second straight indoor All-America effort. In other events, Neil Henning placed 19th in the shot put with a heave of 47-9.25. Feb. 19, at NCCAA Indoor Championship
Joel Smith and Jason Scott earned two individual titles apiece in the NCCAA Indoor Championship at the University of Findlay. Cedarville, who also claimed the men’s Coaching Staff of the Year award, totaled 106.2 points to finish 2nd behind champion Greenville’s 129 points. Smith set a new meet record in winning the high jump with an effort of 6-feet 9.75-inches. He also set a school record with a 1st-place leap of 45-11.50 in the triple jump. Scott repeated as pole vault champion by clearing 15-9 which improved the NAIA automatic qualifying mark he reached earlier in the season. He added the 55 meter hurdles title to his accomplishments with a time of 7.96 seconds. The Jackets had two other All-America showings (top 3 finishers). Feb. 12, at DePauw Indoor Invitational
Joel Smith cleared a career-best 6-feet 10.25-inches to win the high jump competition at the DePauw Indoor Invitational. The effort improved upon his NAIA indoor qualifying performance that had been set earlier in the season. Jason Scott did the same in the pole vault with a 4th-place showing of 15-5.50. The defending outdoor national champion had qualified for the NAIA indoor with a 15-3 effort a week before in the Cedarville Invitational. Freshman Neil Henning busted loose a school-record 50-feet 0.50-inches effort to finish 4th in the shot put. The mark also met the NAIA automatic qualifying standard. Dan Hudson had the previous record of 49-6 set in 1998. Elsewhere, Tim Beck was 5th in the long jump (22-1.50), Todd Marquardt placed 8th in the pole vault (13-11.75), and Jim Sawin tied for 8th in the high jump (6-2.75). Feb. 4, CEDARVILLE INDOOR INVITATIONAL
Defending NAIA outdoor pole vault champion Jason Scott met the indoor qualifying standard in the event and set a new school record in the 55 meter hurdles to highlight the first Cedarville Invitational in the new Doden Field House. He won the pole vault by clearing 15-feet 3-inches and then posted a 2nd-place time of 7.92 seconds in the 55 meter hurdles to break the previous school mark by 0.07. Scott also won the long jump with a leap of 20-10. Five other Yellow Jackets won their events. The list includes Joel Smith in the high jump (6-4.25), Neil Henning in the shot put (46-0.75), Matt Clark in the mile (4:29.10), Tim Beck in the 400 meters (51.79), and Andy Goodenough in the 800 meters (1:59.94). Cedarville won the seven-team event with 174.5 points. Wilmington was 2nd with 103 points while Wittenberg was 3rd with 89.5. [COMPLETE RESULTS and PHOTO GALLERY]

Jan. 28-29, at Findlay Classic
Joel Smith, who a week earlier automatically qualified for the NAIA Indoor Championships in the high jump, tacked on a career-best effort to place 3rd at the Findlay Classic. He cleared 6-feet 8.75-inches to better his previous personal best of 6-8 which he matched in the first meet of the season at Ohio Northern. Jason Scott, the reigning NAIA outdoor national champion in the pole vault, placed 6th with an effort of 14-11 in his first competition of the season. Other Yellow Jacket vaulters with notable showings included Justin Mattern (14-5.25), Jason Mattern (13-11.25), and Todd Marquardt (13-11.25). Jan. 21, at Ohio Northern
Joel Smith wasted little time in qualifying for the NAIA Indoor Championships in the high jump with a winning leap in the season opener at Ohio Northern. He cleared 6-feet 8-inches which met the NAIA’s automatic qualifying mark. Kevin Hall was 2nd in the 1,500 meters in 4:09.52 with Matt Clark 4th in 4:13.12. Ben Shroyer finished 2nd in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:03.40. Justin Gutierrez was 3rd in the event in 16:20.52 while Bryan Pittman was 4th in 16:32.51. Neil Henning placed 3rd in the shot put with a heave of 46-4.25. Ryan Bundenthal turned in a 4th-place time of 8.04 seconds in the 55 meter hurdles.
