May 24-26, at NAIA Outdoor Championship
Four Yellow Jackets picked up All-America honors at the NAIA Outdoor Championship hosted by Fresno Pacific University where CU placed 10th overall. Oklahoma Baptist won the meet with 77 points while Dickinson State was the runner-up with 58. Cedarville totaled 28 points. Two Yellow Jackets posted 2nd-place finishes in their respective events. Sophomore Ben Michaud added nearly three feet to his school shot put record. He uncorked a heave of 58-feet 5.25-inches to break his school mark of 55-5.50 set earlier hit season. The other runner-up was freshmen Daniel Roberts, who erased a 20-year old school mark in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:46.19. Kevin Kuhn was an All-American (top six finishers) in the 3,000 meter steeplechase by placing 4th in 9:11.33. Jim Sawin tied for 4th in the high jump by clearing 6-8. Elsewhere, Seth Campbell narrowly missed out on the All-America list in the 5,000 meter racewalk after placing 7th in 26:36.15. Ryan Bundenthal was 8th in the 400 meter hurdles in 54.13 seconds and Justin Herbert came in 10th in the marathon in 2:31:49.67. Christian Maat placed 18th in the hammer with a toss of 162-7 while Neil Henning committed a foul on all three of his attempts. May 11, CEDARVILLE QUALIFIER
Three Yellow Jackets won events in the Cedarville Qualifier as they tuned up for the upcoming NAIA National Championship. Daniel Roberts met the NAIA automatic qualifying mark with a winning time in the 800 meters of 1:53.16. Kevin Kuhn placed first in the 1,500 meters in 3:57.70 and Jason Scott won the pole vault with an effort of 16-feet 7-inches. Christian Maat was an NAIA automatic qualifier in the hammer. May 3-5, at NCCAA Outdoor Championship
Fellow American Mideast Conference member Malone edged the Yellow Jackets by one point for the NCCAA outdoor championship. The Pioneers totaled 127 points while Cedarville, who has not won an outdoor banner since 1984, finished with 126 points. The Jackets had a trio of individual champions. Jason Scott won his second straight pole vault title and third overall by clearing 17-feet even. Ben Michaud repeated as the shot put champion with a heave of 54-feet 9.50-inches while Kevin Kuhn was a repeat winner in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in a time of 9:32.77. The top three finishers in each event are recognized as NCCAA All-Americans. Daniel Roberts was the 5K runner-up in 14:56.08 and Justin Herbert placed 2nd in the 10K in 32:37.09. Third-place performances came from Jud Brooker in the 1,500 meters (4:00.98), Ryan Bundenthal in the 400 meter hurdles (54.40), Jim Sawin in the high jump (6-8), Neil Henning in the shot put (50-0.50), and Titus Goodew in the decathlon (5,385 points). April 20-21, at American Mideast Conference Championship
Jason Scott broke the meet record in the pole vault and also won the 110 meter hurdles at the American Mideast Conference Championship hosted by Houghton College. Tiffin won the nine-team meet with 242 points, Malone was 2nd with 172, and Cedarville was 3rd at 169. Scott cleared 16-feet 9.25-inches to break the old AMC record (15-6) by more than a foot. His winning time in the 110 meter hurdles was 15.15 seconds and he placed 2nd in the javelin with a toss of 163-4. Ben Michaud won the shot put with a school-record heave of 55-5.50. The 4 x 800 meter relay squad of Daniel Roberts, Kevin Kuhn, Joshua Saunders, and Kurt Groman set another school mark in 7:49.53 which was good enough for 2nd place. Roberts won the 1,500 meters in an AMC record time of 3:48.20 to lower his earlier NAIA automatic qualifying mark. Jim Sawin earned the high jump title with an effort of 6-8 and Kuhn won the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 9:32.80. April 13-14, at Miami Invitational
Kevin Kuhn won the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the Miami Invitational and qualified for the NAIA Outdoor Championship. He posted a winning time of 9:20.55. Ben Michaud was a winner in the shot put with a heave of 52-feet 1.25-inches. Jim Sawin took 1st place in the high jump at 6-6.75. Daniel Roberts improved upon his NAIA automatic qualifying time in the 1,500 meters with a 2nd-place mark of 3:50.04. Cincinnati won the 11-team meet with 213 points as the invitational was staged in rainy, windy, and cold conditions. March 31, CEDARVILLE OPEN
Ben Michaud wiped out the school record in the shot put and the Yellow Jackets won their own Cedarville Open. The event was hampered by rain and two delays for lightning. Michaud uncorked a heave of 54-feet 9.50-inches to add 10.50 inches to the old shot put record. He had already met the NAIA automatic qualifying mark in the event the previous week in the outdoor season opener at Baylor. Daniel Roberts won the 1,500 meters in 3:52.0 to qualify for the NAIA and Seth Campbell's time of 26:57.25 in the 5,000 meter race walk was an automatic mark. Jason Scott, another earlier NAIA qualifier, won the pole vault at 16-8. Elsewhere, Ryan Bundenthal won the 400 meter hurdles in 55.19 seconds. Runner-up finishes were turned in by Sammy Starr in the 200 meter dash (22.80), Joshua Saunders in the 800 meters (1:57.07), Jim Sawin in the high jump (6-4.75), the 4 x 400 meter relay squad (3:30.37), Neil Henning in both the shot put (47-1.75) and hammer (160-2); and Kevin Kuhn in both the 1,500 (3:55.90) and the 400 meter hurdles (56.31). March 24, at Wittenberg Invitational
Daniel Roberts posted victories in the 800 and 5,000 meter runs at the Wittenberg Invitational. The freshman was the only Yellow Jacket to win an event in the non-scoring meet. Roberts covered the 800 meters in 1:55 and then won the 5,000 in 15:11.3. Justin Herbert was 3rd in the 10,000 meters in 33:14. [COMPLETE RESULTS]
March 24, at Baylor Invitational
Jason Scott eclipsed his own school record in the pole vault to lead four individual champions from Cedarville at the Baylor Invitational. Two of the winners automatically qualified for the NAIA Outdoor Championship. Scott cleared 17-feet 1-inch to add a quarter inch to his old school record. He, along with Ben Michaud, who won the shot put with a toss of 51-9.25, met the NAIA automatic qualifying mark in their respective events. Kevin Kuhn won the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 9:48.28 while Jim Sawin took 1st place in the high jump at 6-6.75. Neil Henning was 2nd in the hammer throw at 147-10 and Ryan Bundenthal placed 2nd in the 400 meter hurdles in 54.47 seconds. The meet was non-scoring. [COMPLETE RESULTS]
March 8-10, at NAIA Indoor Championship
Jason Scott won his second straight NAIA indoor pole vault title with a school-record effort of 17-feet 8.50 inches. He was one of three All-America performances (top 6 finishers) turned in by the Yellow Jackets. Cedarville placed 10th out of 90 schools entered in the meet. Scott, who is a previous winner of the NAIA outdoor pole vault crown achieved as a freshman in 2004, tacked on two inches to his school record. Ben Michaud set a new school record while finishing 2nd in the shot put with a heave of 57-7. Daniel Roberts established a school record in the mile placing 3rd in 4:10.13. Elsewhere, the 4 x 800 meter relay team of Jud Brooker, Kevin Kuhn, Kurt Groman, and Joshua Saunders set a school record of 7:53.18 despite failing to advance out of the prelims. Jim Sawin tied for 8th place in the high jump (6-4.75) while Neil Henning was 10th in the shot put (53-0.25) and 18th in the weight throw (49-0.75). Four other athletes competed in the prelims of their respective events. The quartet included Saunders in the 800 meters (1:55.25), Ryan Bundenthal in the 60 meter hurdles (8.45), Sammy Starr in the 400 meters (50.64), and Bryan Pittman in the 3,000 (9:14.21). Feb. 24, at NCCAA Indoor Championship
Freshman Daniel Roberts was named the Outstanding Male Athlete of the Meet and Cedarville won its second straight title at the NCCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship at Taylor University. The Yellow Jackets finished with 135 points in the 12-team field while Indiana Wesleyan and Greenville tied for 2nd place with 102 points each. Roberts won the mile run with an NAIA automatic qualifying time of 4:13.48 and also placed first in the 3,000 meters in 8:47.36. Neil Henning was also a double winner for CU. He was victorious in the shot put with a school-record heave of 56-feet 7.50 inches which improved upon his NAIA qualifying mark and then he met the NAIA standard in the weight throw with a winning toss of 52-10.75. Jim Sawin picked up the Yellow Jackets' other victory by winning the high jump at 6-8. Ben Michaud joined Henning on the All-America list (top 3 finishers) after placing 2nd in the shot put (52-2.25) and 3rd in the weight throw (51-0). The other All-America performance came from Jason Scott, who was 3rd in the long jump at 22-1.50. Feb. 16, at Ohio Northern
Ryan Bundenthal and Jason Scott both broke their own school records to highlight the Yellow Jackets' showing at Ohio Northern. Cedarville totaled 195 points to finish second in the seven-team meet with the host Polar Bears winning with 233 points. Bundenthal lowered his record time in the 300 meters set earlier this season to 36.74 seconds. He also won the 55 meter hurdles in 7.97 seconds. Scott took 0.04 seconds off his record in the 200 meter dash with a winning mark of 23.10. He also placed first in the pole vault by clearing 16-feet 6-inches. Cedarville registered victories in five other events. The list includes Sammy Starr in the 400 meters (50.40), Joshua Saunders in the 800 (1:58.28), Bryan Pittman in the mile (4:38.93), Jim Sawin in the high jump (6-4), and Neil Henning in the shot put (52-8.25). Feb. 10, at Findlay Open
Jason Scott soared to victory in the pole vault at the Findlay Open and established a new school record in the 60 meter hurdles. He cleared 17-feet 1-inch in the vault and placed second in the 60 meter hurdles with a school-record time of 8.30 seconds. Freshman Daniel Roberts won the 3,000 meters and automatically qualified for the NAIA Indoor Championship with a time of 8:38.93. Jim Sawin won the high jump with a mark of 6-6.75 and Matt Clark took first in the mile run in 4:30.13. Feb. 2-3, at Indiana Relays
Ben Michaud broke his own school record in the shot put and placed 2nd overall at the Indiana Relays. The sophomore, who entered the week with the 5th-best toss in the NAIA this season at 53-7.50, uncorked a heave of 54-feet 5-inches. Michaud had previously met the NAIA automatic qualifying mark in the event. The 4 x 800 meter relay team of Jud Brooker, Kurt Groman, Kevin Kuhn, and Joshua Saunders met the NAIA qualifying standard. Jan. 26, CEDARVILLE INVITATIONAL
Jason Scott won two events and set a school record in the process to pace the Yellow Jackets to a first-place finish in the Cedarville Invitational at the Doden Field House. CU totaled 161 points to easily outscore 14 other schools. Morehead State was the runner-up with 93 points and Saint Joseph's (Ind.) was next with 76. Scott set a new school mark in winning the 55 meter hurdles in 7.69 seconds which met the automatic NAIA qualifying standard. He also established meet and field house records in the pole vault with a top mark of 17-feet even. Cedarville had three other winners, who all set meet and field house records. The trio included Ben Michaud in the shot put with a heave of 53-5.50; Jim Sawin in the high jump with a leap of 6-7; and Daniel Roberts, who won the mile in 4:21.76. [COMPLETE RESULTS]
Jan. 19, at Ohio Northern
Ryan Bundenthal set school records in the 55 meter hurdles and 300 meter dash as Cedarville opened the indoor track & field season at Ohio Northern. The Yellow Jackets totaled 125 points to finish 3rd in the seven-team meet behind the host Polar Bears (181.16) and Findlay (167). Bundenthal eclipsed his own hurdles record (7.83) that he shared with Jason Scott with a winning time of 7.74 seconds. The mark also met the NAIA indoor automatic qualifying standard. Bundenthal was 4th in the 300 meters in 37.10 seconds to break the previous record of 37.44 set by Nate Jenkins in 2000. Shot put specialists Ben Michaud and Neil Henning both qualified for the NAIA Championship with a 1-2 finish. Michaud broke the school record he set last year by one foot with a heave of 53-7.50 while Henning placed 2nd at 50-11.
