Season Outlook

Troy Page

The Cedarville College golf team expects to provide some tougher competition for opponents during their 1998 tournament schedule. Head coach Jim Kragel will be looking for an influx of young talent to provide a boost for the Yellow Jacket linksters.

"The team should be quite improved this year with the addition of three strong freshmen," Kragel predicted. "That trio is led by Matt Dunn (Hamilton, OH), who shot 76 last fall in his very first college tournament. Joe Mulvaney (Tucson, AZ) should provide some scores in the 70's, and Russ Toms (Marion, IN), who won a major junior tournament in Indiana last summer."

Steve Burchett

Dunn was Cedarville's low scorer in the fall at the NCCAA National Tournament in Michigan. He carded rounds of 76 and 82, and his 158 total tied for 16th overall.

Kragel knows he will need some help from his veteran golfers if the squad is to be successful this spring. "Seniors Steve Burchett (Morral, OH) and Troy Page (Terre Haute, IN) have been letter winners since their freshman year. Also, sophomore Joel Schenk (Grandville, MI) has the potential on any given day to shoot the team's best score."

Page posted the lowest numbers last year of any returning player with an average of 87.1 strokes per 18 holes. Burchett averaged 87.4.

The highlight of the season will be on April 28 when the Yellow Jackets host the 17th Annual Cedarville College Invitational. The event will again be held at the Country Club of the North, a Jack Nicklaus signature course in Beavercreek. Other teams participating will be defending champion Shawnee State, Mt. Vernon Nazarene, Walsh, Tiffin, and Cincinnati Bible.
