Dr. Don Callan, Academic Dean of School

Dr. Don Callan

Dr. Don Callan is in his 39th year at Cedarville College, but his first as the new Dean of the School and Health and Human Performance. He received the promotion after completing his 37th season as the school's athletic director. As one of four Academic Deans on campus, he will oversee the Department of Excercise and Sport Science, athletic training, and the Yellow Jackets athletic program which contains 14 varsity sports.

Dr. Callan has been regarded as a well-respected leader at all levels of the athletic arena. For his longtime commitment and contribution to athletics in the state of Ohio, he received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the Agonis Club in Dayton, Ohio in 1996. He is a member of the Halls of Fame at the NAIA, NCCAA, Cedarville College, and Taylor University, his alma mater.

Callan served as Cedarville's head men's basketball coach from 1960 through 1995. He completed his career with eight straight 20-win seasons and a 579-423 record. Callan, who is the founder of the Missions Involvement Service (MIS) at Cedarville College, has coached and lectured in more than a dozen countries around the world.

Callan is a 1955 graduate of Taylor University. He received his master's degree from Ball State University in 1960, and his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University in 1968.

Dr. Callan and his wife, Nedra, reside in Cedarville. They have two married children and four grandchildren.


Jim Clark, Asst. Women's Volleyball Coach; Asst. SID

Jim Clark

Jim Clark is in his third year at Cedarville College taking on two part-time responsibilities within the Athletic Department. He is a member of the volleyball coaching staff assisting his wife, Teresa, who is the head coach, plus he will be assisting in the sports information office. He serves full-time as the Admissions Production Coordinator.

Upon graduating from Cedarville College in 1975, Clark lived in Fort Wayne, IN where he accumulated 21 years of business experience in the areas of newspaper publishing, advertising sales, marketing, computer graphics and design, desktop publishing, and journalism.

Clark helped develop and produce game programs and media guides for all levels of athletic teams including the Fort Wayne Komets (IHL hockey), Fort Wayne Fury (CBA basketball), Fort Wayne Flames (ASPL indoor soccer), IUPU-Fort Wayne men's and women's volleyball, and Blackhawk Christian High School. He also was involved in the production of the Regional Radio Sports Network Indiana High School Football and Basketball Preview Magazines.

Jim and his wife, Teresa, reside in Cedarville. The Clarks have two children: Carla, 20, who is a junior at Cedarville College, and Jonathan, 18, who is a senior at Cedarville High School.


Teresa Clark, Head Women's Volleyball Coach

Teresa Clark

Teresa Clark begins her third year as head coach of the Lady Jacket volleyball program. She has guided Cedarville to a 61-27 record following back-to-back 30-win seasons. During her initial campaign in 1996, Cedarville had a 31-15 record which included a best-ever 16-1 start and an eventual berth in the NCCAA National Tournament and the Mid-Ohio Conference Tournament. Last fall, the Jackets were 30-12 and again qualified for the MOC Tournament.

A 1975 graduate of Cedarville College, she spent seven years as girls volleyball coach at Blackhawk Christian High School in Fort Wayne, IN. Clark registered a 78-86 record at Blackhawk, but her last two teams were particularly impressive with a combined 35-11 record. Her 1994 club was 16-6 and finished as Sectional Runner-Up to Snider High School, a perennial power in Indiana high school volleyball. Blackhawk advanced to the Sectional semifinals in 1995 and finished with a 19-5 mark.

Clark is an Assistant Professor of Physical Education. She earned her master's degree from Indiana University in 1986.

Teresa's husband, Jim, is her assistant coach. The Clarks reside in Cedarville and have two children: Carla, 20, who is a junior at Cedarville College, and Jonathan, 18, who is a senior at Cedarville High School.


Bob Duchardt, Head Athletic Trainer

Bob Duchardt is in his tenth year at Cedarville College where he serves as Head Athletic Trainer. His primary responsibility is to oversee the training room operation and the student-trainer clinical program which includes approximately 30 students.

Duchardt started athletic training in 1975 and became certified through the National Athletic Trainers Association in 1978. Prior to coming to Cedarville, he spent eight years as athletic trainer at the Berkshire School, a prep school in Sheffield, MA. In 1988, he was named the Eastern Athletic Trainers Association Scholastic Athletic Trainer of the Year.

Duchardt is a 1965 graduate of Taylor University and he earned his master's degree from Union College in 1971. Bob and his wife, Sharon, reside in Xenia. They have four children and three grandchildren.


Alan Edlund, Head Men's Tennis Coach

Alan Edlund

Alan Edlund embarks on his fifth season as the Yellow Jacket head men's tennis coach. He has guided the netters to a 34-38 dual match record during his first four years with two runner-up finishes in the Mid-Ohio Conference.

Edlund graduated from Cedarville College in 1977 with a Social Science Comprehensive degree. He played for the Jackets from 1972 through 1975 under NAIA Hall of Fame coach Murray Murdoch. Edlund was a four-time All-NAIA District 22 and All-MOC performer mainly playing in the number three singles position. During his playing career, the Yellow Jackets won four NAIA District 22 and MOC championships, plus they advanced to the NAIA National Tournament each year.

Edlund was an assistant coach at Cedarville from 1976 through 1984. He was Murdoch's handpicked successor when the legendary coach stepped down following an illustrious 28-year career.

Edlund has been employed for the past 20 years at Holiday Inn South in Springfield where he has held numerous positions including that of accountant, personnel director, and even general manager. Alan and his wife, Kathy, reside in Cedarville and have five children.


Kathy Freese, Head Women's Basketball Coach

Kathy Freese

Kathy Freese begins her eighth season as head women's basketball coach at Cedarville College. Her teams have put together a 97-120 record during her previous seven years.

Freese guided the Lady Jackets to three straight NCCAA National Tournament appearances from 1994 through 1996. Her 1994-95 squad, which finished with a 20-11 record, was only the second women's basketball team at Cedarville College to win 20 games in a season. Freese was voted Mid-Ohio Conference Coach of the Year following the campaign. She was also the NCCAA District III Coach of the Year in 1993-94 after leading her team to the district championship.

Prior to coming to Cedarville in 1991, Freese spent 20 years at Perrysburg Junior and Senior High Schools in Perrysburg, Ohio. She posted a 243-104 (.700) career record in 17 years as girls basketball coach, and had a 202-45 (.818) slate in 11 seasons as girls volleyball coach. Her 1979 volleyball team won the Ohio Class AA state title. She was one of three charter members inducted into the Perrysburg High School Coaches Hall of Fame in January, 1997.

Freese, who is single and resides in Cedarville, is an Assistant Professor of Physical Education. She is a 1971 graduate of Bowling Green State University and she earned her master's degree from the same school in 1981.


Dr. Evan Hellwig, Sports Medicine Coordinator

Dr. Evan Hellwig

Dr. Evan Hellwig is in his tenth year at Cedarville College and serves as the Sports Medicine Coordinator. His duties include being the curriculum director for the Athletic Training major, plus he is the liaison between the athletic department and all allied health professions that Cedarville College works with.

Dr. Hellwig is an Associate Professor in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science. He is a certified athletic trainer through the National Athletic Trainers Association and is a licensed physical therapist. Hellwig is a 1984 graduate of Mankato State University, achieved his Physical Therapy Certificate from the University of Iowa School of Medicine in 1986, and earned his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in 1992.

Evan and his wife, Kelly, reside in Springfield with their three children: Chelsie, 7; Jordan, 6; and Deric, 5.


Jim Irish, Head Women's Softball Coach

Jim Irish

Jim Irish is in his first year at Cedarville College and serves as head women's softball coach. He is also part of the school's Athletic Facilities Staff.

Irish spent the past 11 years at Heritage Christian Schools in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he was a teacher and coach. He started the school's varsity baseball program in 1986 and coached through 1994 before switching his attention to girls' softball from 1995 through 1998.

Irish taught Physical Education at Heritage Christian, developed the school's driver education program, and developed and taught a Home Repair program. He also served as the middle school athletic director.

Jim and his wife, Cheryl, who is an assistant professor in the Education Department at Cedarville College, have three children and reside in Xenia. They have a daughter, Kelli, 20, who is attending Grace College in Indiana; another daughter, Jenni, 18, who is a freshman at Cornerstone College in Michigan; and a son, Jimmy, 16, who is a sophomore at Xenia Christian High School.


Dr. Pam Johnson, Head Women's Tennis Coach

Dr. Pam Johnson

Dr. Pamela Diehl Johnson has established herself as one of the foremost authorities in NAIA women's tennis. Besides serving as head coach of the Lady Jackets for what will be her 23rd season, she has been a member of the NAIA National Tournament Committee since 1985 and has held the position of National Tournament Director since 1989. In recognition of her oustanding leadership, she was named the 1996-97 NAIA Great Lakes Region Female Athletics Administrator of the Year.

Johnson has guided the Cedarville women's tennis program to a record of 162-85 for a .656 winning percentage. Her teams own seven NAIA District 22 championships, two Mid-Ohio Conference titles, and two Western Buckeye Collegiate Conference crowns. She has taken eight teams to the NAIA National Tournament and has coached 13 NAIA All-America Scholar-Athletes.

Johnson is a Professor in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science and co-authored the book, Physical Fitness and the Christian. She is the Director of Academic Assistance at the college and is also an Executive Committee member of the Greene County Special Olympics.

Johnson is a 1970 graduate of the University of Dayton. She earned her master's degree (1971) and Ph.D. (1974) from The Ohio State University. Pam and her husband, Cliff, who is the Assistant to the President of Cedarville College, reside in Cedarville.


Elaine Keller, Dean's Assistant

Elaine Keller

Elaine Keller begins her sixth year in the School of Health and Human Performance. This is her first year to serve in the newly created position of Dean's Assistant to Dr. Callan.

Elaine essentially handles all secretarial duties, office management, and administrative duties as it pertains to the Dean. Her specific responsibilities include assisting with data base management which provides for comparative analysis in all areas of the School, and assisting the Dean in coordinating the faculty development program.

Elaine's husband, Kirk, works for the Greene County Sheriff's Department. The Kellers reside in Cedarville with their three children: Justin, 14; Teresa, 12; and Nathan, 10.


Elvin King, Head Cross Country/Distance Coach

Elvin King

Elvin King has been a part of the Yellow Jacket men's track and cross country programs since coming to Cedarville in 1969, and he started the women's track and cross country programs in 1980. While he continues his head coaching duties in cross country, King resigned as head track coach in 1990 to devote full attention to the distance program.

King has developed an especially powerful women's cross country program. The Lady Jackets won the Mid-Ohio Conference championship from 1992 through 1996 and they finished in a best-ever tie for fifth place in country at the 1996 NAIA Nationals after placing seventh the previous year.

King is responsible for developing the National Christian College Athletic Association track championships, and he has served as meet director of the NCCAA cross country championships for 17 of the past 19 years. His men's and women's teams have won a combined 12 NCCAA track and cross country titles including the 1996 women's cross country banner.

King's efforts earned him induction into the Cedarville College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1988 and the NCCAA Hall of Fame in 1993. He has won numerous Coach of the Year Awards in the NCCAA, NAIA District 22, and the Mid-Ohio Conference. He is also past president of the Ohio Intercollegiate Cross Country Association.

King, who is an Associate Professor of Physical Education, is a 1964 graduate of Kent State University. He earned his master's degree from Bowling Green State University in 1967.

Elvin and his wife, Joyce, reside in Cedarville. They have two children and four grandchildren.


Jim Kragel, Head Men's Golf Coach

Jim Kragel

Jim Kragel is in his fifth season as head coach of the Yellow Jacket men's golf program. A scratch golfer for a number of years, he possesses extensive competitive playing experience at the professional level, plus he previously coached high school golf for three years.

Kragel came to Cedarville in 1994 from Warner Southern College in Florida. While residing in the Sunshine State he played in a number of mini tour events on the Tommy Armour Tour and the Central Florida Tour. He has also competed in several U.S. Open qualifiers.

Kragel is an Assistant Professor of Communication Arts where he teaches broadcasting courses with an emphasis on video and television. He is a 1977 graduate of Mankato State University, and he earned his master's degree from Wheaton College in 1984.

Jim and his wife, Julie, who is an elementary school teacher, reside in Cedarville. The Kragels have two sons: David, 18, and Jonathan, 14.


John McGillivray, Head Women's Soccer Coach

John McGillivray

John McGillivray is one of the most well-respected soccer coaches in the state of Ohio and the NAIA nationally. After establishing a 215-197-27 record in 24 years at the helm of the men's program, he begins his first season as the women's head coach. He also is an assistant coach on the track & field staff specializing in the jumps.

McGillivray and his teams have been recognized for their sportsmanlike behavior. He was presented the first-ever Distinguished Merit Award in 1990 by the Ohio Collegiate Soccer Officials Association. The National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association honored him in 1992 with their National Merit Award.

McGillivray has led his teams to eight Mid-Ohio Conference titles, five NCCAA District III banners, three NAIA District 22 championships, and one NAIA Area IV crown which carried with it a trip to the NAIA Nationals in 1974. He has guided his squad to five NCCAA National Tournament appearances, a pair of NCCAA National Runner-Up finishes and he was chosen NCCAA National Coach of the Year in 1981.

McGillivray has served in various areas of NAIA soccer including president of the NAIA Soccer Coaches Association from 1983 through 1985. He was inducted into the Cedarville College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991 and the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1993.

McGillivray, who is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Exercise and Sport Science, is a 1970 graduate of Cedarville College, and he earned his master's degree in 1976 from the University of Dayton. John and his wife, Bonnie, reside in Cedarville and have five children and three grandchildren.


Chris Merckx, Assistant Athletic Trainer

Chris Merckx

Chris Merckx is in her first year at Cedarville College serving as Assistant Athletic Trainer. She is also an Assistant Professor of Athletic Training.

Merckx joins the Yellow Jacket staff after spending four years as assistant athletic trainer at her alma mater, Anderson University in Indiana. She also carried the titles of supervisor of clinical experience and Instructor of Physical Education.

Merckx, who is certified through the National Athletic Trainers Association, is a 1992 graduate of Anderson University. She earned her master's in Physical Education with an emphasis in Sports Administration from the University of Northern Colorado in 1993. Chris is single and resides in Cedarville.


Dr. Delyte Morris, Assistant Women's Tennis Coach

Dr. Dee Morris

Dr. Dee Morris enters her 23rd season as a Lady Jacket tennis assistant coach along side Pam Johnson. Morris also has a well-respected reputation within NAIA women's tennis and she has been an active participant in many capacities. She is in her 12th year as a member of the NAIA National Tournament Committee and she serves on the NAIA Rating Committee. Morris is also the women's tennis chair for the American Mideast Conference.

Dr. Morris is a Physician's Assistant in family practice in Springfield, Ohio, and is an adjunct professor in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science at Cedarville College. She is a graduate of Geneva College and she earned her master's and Ph.D. degrees from Indiana University. Dr. Morris is single and resides in Xenia.


Paul Orchard, Head Track & Field Coach

Paul Orchard begins his sixth year at Cedarville College as head track and field coach. He is also an Assistant Professor of Physical Education.

The Yellow Jackets have enjoyed notable success during Orchard's five years at the helm. He has led the Lady Jackets to an unprecedented five straight National Christian College Athletic Association banners and one Mid-Ohio Conference title, and he has guided the men to one MOC championship in 1994 as well as three NCCAA runner-up showings.

Orchard is a five-time NCCAA Women's Coach of the Year. He was named Mid-Ohio Conference men's Coach of the Year in 1994 and was women's Coach of the Year in 1996 and 1997.

Orchard came to Cedarville in 1993 after spending six years at the University of Akron. He served as an assistant coach for the Zips' track and cross country programs plus coordinated all of their recruiting.

Orchard is a 1983 graduate of Taylor University where he competed in track and cross country. He was a graduate assistant at Miami University (Ohio) and earned his master's degree from the school in 1986. Paul and his wife, Wendy, reside in Xenia with their sons, Brendan Taylor, 2; and Ryan Eric, born August 9, 1998.


Nancy Ranger, Administrative Assistant

Nancy Ranger

Nancy Ranger begins her ninth year in the Athletic Department where she serves as Administrative Assistant. Her many responsibilities include being the secretary to the Athletic Director and to all of the Yellow Jacket teams.

Nancy's major role is that of coordinating all of the athletic eligibility. She also handles all gifts to the Yellow Jacket Club and supervises registration for the Yellow Jackets Sports Camps during the summer.

Nancy graduated from Cedarville College in 1994 with a degree in Business Communications Technology. She is single and resides in Cedarville.



Jeff Reep, Head Men's Basketball Coach

Jeff Reep

Jeff Reep enters his fourth season as head coach of the Yellow Jacket men's basketball program. His record at Cedarville is 53-45 which includes a berth in the 1996 NAIA Great Lakes championship game.

Prior to coming to Cedarville, Reep spent the previous 11 years at New Mexico State University where he held the title of associate head coach. The Aggies qualified for postseason play during his last seven years at the school including NCAA berths from 1990 through 1994.

Reep was an assistant coach for the 1983-84 season at Stetson University in Florida. He was a graduate assistant at Delta State in Mississippi from 1979 through 1981 and served as an assistant coach at the school from 1981 through 1983. He was the junior varsity coach at Cedarville College for the 1978-79 season.

Reep played basketball at Cedarville under Don Callan from 1974 through 1978. He graduated as the Yellow Jackets ninth all-time leading scorer with 1,279 points.

An Associate Professor of Physical Education, Reep is a 1978 graduate of Cedarville College plus he earned his master's degree from Delta State in 1981. Jeff and his wife, Criss, reside in Springfield, Ohio and are the parents of five boys: Ryan, 13; Nathan, 11; Aaron, 9; Jason, 6; and Kevin, 1.


Pete Reese, Athletic Director

Pete Reese

Pete Reese begins his 11th year at Cedarville College and on July 1 was promoted to the office of athletic director where he will oversee 14 varsity Yellow Jacket sports. He brings over 30 years of athletic administration to the program.

Reese previously held the positions of assistant men's basketball coach and Director of Athletic Facilities at Cedarville. Among his many responsibilities, he guided the construction of new complexes for soccer, baseball, and softball.

Reese was Cedarville's head baseball coach from 1989 to 1991. He was named the 1990 NAIA District 22 and Mid-Ohio Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Yellow Jackets to their first MOC title in 20 years and the top seed in the district tournament.

From 1965 to 1988, Reese was associated with The Master's College in California, formerly known as Los Angeles Baptist College. At one time or another he held positions as athletic director, chairman of the physical education department, professor, and coach.

Reese is a 1960 graduate of Cedarville College and has a master's degree in education from Eastern Michigan University. He established himself as one of the most dominant basketball players to ever play for the Yellow Jackets and he was inducted as a charter member of the Cedarville College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1984.

Pete and his wife, Joyce, live in Xenia and have two married children. A daughter, Kim Ray, and her husband, Ken, reside in San Jose, California. Their son Chris, a 1989 Cedarville graduate, is presently athletic director and head basketball coach at Multnomah Bible College in Oregon. He and his wife, Cheryl, have two children.


Merilee Shank, Administrative Assistant

Merilee Shank

Merilee Shank is in her first year as Administrative Assistant in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science. She has been employed at Cedarville College since 1974.

Merilee, who is a 1975 graduate of the College, serves as a receptionist and as secretary to the Department Chair. Her responsibilities also include assisting faculty and the Chair in course preparation as well as assisting students as appropriate.

Merilee's husband Steve, who is also a Cedarville College graduate, serves as principal of Sugarcreek Elementary School in Bellbrook, Ohio. The Shanks reside in Cedarville and have one married son and two daughters.


Norris Smith, Head Baseball Coach

Norris Smith

Norris Smith begins his seventh season at Cedarville College as head baseball coach and as Athletic Facility Coordinator. The Yellow Jackets have posted a 52-128 record during the past six years with one postseason appearance.

Prior to coming to Cedarville, Smith was a Biology teacher at Marion L. Steele High School in Amherst, Ohio from 1966 through 1992. He was head baseball coach during his final 25 years there and established a 292-225 career record. His teams won eight Southwestern Conference championships, one district title, and he was a three-time conference Coach of the Year.

Smith is a 1963 graduate of Cedarville College where he starred in basketball and baseball. He earned his master's degree from Kent State University in 1971. Norris and his wife, Judy, reside in Cedarville. They have two married daughters and four grandsons.


Roger Swigart, Head Men's Soccer Coach

Roger Swigart is the sixth head coach in the 36-year history of the Cedarville College men's soccer program. He begins his first season at the Yellow Jacket helm upon taking over for NAIA Hall of Fame coach John McGillivray, who moved over to the women's coaching job after 24 years of leading the men.

Swigart has extensive soccer experience as both a player and coach and possesses an impressive list of credentials. For the past two years, he has been an assistant coach at Cedarville which is a position he also held in 1990. He was involved in every facet of the program which included recruiting, planning and conducting practice sessions, organizing off season training, coordinating fundraising efforts, and he developed and marketed the popular Yellow Jacket Soccer Camp last summer.

In between his two stints as an assistant at Cedarville, Swigart was at Pillsbury College in Minnesota for the 1992 through 1994 campaigns. He was the Comets' head coach his final two seasons there compiling an 11-19-3 record in a program that competes at the Division II level of the National Christian College Athletic Association.

Swigart's passion for the sport has had an influence worldwide over the past decade through soccer missions work via the Cedarville College Missions Involvement Service (MIS), Ambassadors in Sport, Missionary Athletes International, and Northland Baptist Bible College. He has helped to build relationships through soccer to share the message of Jesus Christ in Argentina, Austria, Bangladesh, England, Hungary, India, Morocco, Spain, Uruguay, and in the United States at the 1994 World Cup.

Swigart, who is a 1990 graduate of Cedarville College with a degree in American Studies, was a four-year starter for the Yellow Jackets as a midfielder. He was a three-time All-NAIA District 22 and All-Mid-Ohio Conference selection, was named to the NSCAA All-Mideast Team, and also served as a team captain. He tallied 15 goals and 11 assists in his 66-game career despite playing just six matches as a senior due to injury. The Jackets compiled a 40-33-4 record during that time, won one MOC title, and made an appearance at the 1988 NCCAA National Tournament.

Swigart, who is single and resides in Cedarville, played professionally in the spring and summer of 1997 for the Charlotte Eagles. The squad participates in the United Systems of Interregional Soccer Leagues (USISL).

Dawn Wambold, Assistant Women's Soccer Coach

Dawn Wambold

Dawn Wambold is in her second season as the assistant women's soccer coach. She is a lifelong Cedarville native who first became involved in soccer as a player at the SAY level and continued playing as a teenager as well.

Wambold is a 1996 graduate of Cedarville College with a degree in elementary education and is a secretary in the Department of Language and Literature. She spent the 1996-97 school year as substitute teacher in the West Carrollton and Bellbrook school districts. She was a three-sport prep athlete at Cedarville High School and later played tennis for the Lady Jackets.

Dawn and her husband, John, a 1995 Cedarville College graduate, reside in Cedarville. He holds the position of Director of Community Ministries at the college.


Mark Womack, Sports Information Director

Mark Womack is in his 16th year as sports information director at Cedarville College. He coordinates all information and statistics generated by the 14 Yellow Jacket varsity teams, and he writes and edits the STING, the sports information quarterly from the college.

Womack is in his 17th year of writing and producing Yellow Jacket Sports Update for the CDR Radio Network. He is also the radio play-by-play voice for all Cedarville College men's basketball games.

Womack, who is a 1983 graduate of Cedarville College, is a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and serves as the Administrative Assistant/Publicity Director for the American Mideast Conference. He chairs the NAIA Hall of Fame/Awards Committee and was named NAIA Great Lakes Region Male Athletics Administrator of the Year for 1996-97.

Mark and his wife, Amy, reside in Cedarville with their three daughters: Amber, 14; Aubrey, 11; and Alison, 8.
