Walker, Short earn Callan Awards

CEDARVILLE (6-17-2008) - Women's softball performer Andrea Walker and men's basketball player Ryan Short are the recipients of the Donald E. Callan Awards at Cedarville University for the 2007-08 academic year.

The awards are given in the name of Dr. Don Callan, former Dean of the School of Health and Human Performance. Dr. Callan has served in various other capacities in athletics during his 48 years at the school.

The awards recognize student-athletes who have participated all four years at the school with an emphasis on Christian service, academics, leadership, and athletic accomplishment.

Walker, a senior from Mason, Ohio, is a four-year starter on the infield for the Lady Jackets. She started all 42 games this spring and led the team with 93 assists.

Walker ranks second all-time at CU with 316 assists. She is a two-time All-NCCAA Midwest Region selection and is a two-time NAIA and NCCAA Scholar-Athlete. Walker spent much of the 2007 summer in the Dominican Republic serving on a missions trip.

Short, a senior from Springfield, Ohio, is a four-year starter for the Yellow Jacket basketball squad and was a team captain in 2007-08. He is an NAIA and NCCAA All-American and was selected this year's winner of the NCCAA's Pete Maravich Award as the National Player of the Year.

Short is a three-time all-conference honoree and is CU's 12th all-time leading scorer with 1,745 points. He has taken missions trips to Costa Rica and Jamaica.
