Dr. James Phipps has served as the Faculty Athletic Representative at Cedarville University since 1970. A longtime participant in athletic eligibility at the conference and national levels, he was the 2003-04 recipient of the Wally Schwartz Award which recognizes an FAR who has exhibited loyalty, enthusiasm and honesty for the NAIA.
Phipps continues his role as the NAIA Region IX Eligibility Chair and he has held the same position within the American Mideast Conference for more than 20 years . He is a past president of the league when it was known as the Mid-Ohio Conference and he served five years on the NAIA Council of Affiliated Conferences and Independents.
Phipps is a Professor of Communication Arts at Cedarville University. He is a 1968 graduate of the school and has been employed at the institution ever since. He earned his master's degree in broadcasting from Ohio State University in 1970 and his Ph.D. in Communications from OSU in 1975.
Phipps is a member of the Cedarville University Athletic Hall of Fame. He was inducted in 1997 following a 32-year career as the "voice" of Yellow Jacket men's basketball on the CDR Radio Network. He is also in his second term as mayor of the Village of Cedarville and has served on the Village Council since 1982.
Jim and his wife, Pat, who is a library media specialist at Greeneview High School, reside in Cedarville. They have three children and one grandchild.
