CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Shawnee State came to the Callan Athletic Center and surprisingly had little problem in handing NAIA Division I No. 1 Cedarville a 61-50 setback in front of nearly 3,000 shocked Alumni Night fans.
No one could have seen this coming. The Bears, 8-14 overall and 2-5 AMC, came to town having lost nine of their last 11 games. Add the fact that CU easily won at Shawnee State in November, 74-62, in a game they enjoyed a 25-point lead in the first 15 minutes and outrebounded the hosts by 17 makes this loss even more mystifying.
The Yellow Jackets, 22-3 and 7-1 AMC, held the lead just one time at 4-2 three minutes in. They trailed 15-14 with 8:30 remaining and then decided to go scoreless for the next five minutes. That allowed SSU to take control and finish the half with a 16-3 run. Cedarville missed all 10 of its three-point attempts, shot just 29 percent overall, and trailed 31-17.
The Jackets surrendered the first basket of the second period to face their largest deficit of the game at 16 points. They clawed back to within 49-44 with 3:30 left when the offense went south again for the next three minutes. The Bears, who rank dead last of 14 schools in AMC free throw percentage, went 8-for-8 at the stripe down the stretch to ice it.
Cedarville suffered through a 5-for-25 three-point shooting display. Shawnee also controlled the boards this time, 35-30. Matt Harner tallied 13 points and Daniel Rose came off the bench with 12. [STATS]
