Cedarville rallies for Homecoming tie with NDC

CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Joseph Mueller scored on a free kick with 51 seconds left in regulation to complete a late comeback and the Yellow Jackets held on for a 2-2 draw in two overtimes against NAIA #3 Notre Dame in the annual Homecoming match.

The defending American Mideast Conference champion Falcons controlled the first 80 minutes of the contest. However, Matt Niemiec muscled his way through the NDC defense and deposited his team-high seventh goal of the season in the 81st minute to change the momentum.

Cedarville was awarded a free kick in the final minute about 25 yards out on the right half of the field. Mueller's left-footed shot found the upper corner of the net for the equalizer.

Notre Dame, 8-1-1 overall and 3-0-1 AMC, struck first on a free kick with 75 seconds left in the first half. The visitors made it 2-0 by converting a penalty kick in the 62nd minute.

Both teams produced five shots apiece during the two 10-minute OT periods. Kevin Bender was credited with five saves total for the Jackets, 6-2-2 and 1-0-1 AMC.

NDC had an 8-1 shot advantage in the opening period, but ended up with just a 17-13 edge for the match. Each squad placed five shots on goal. [STATS]
