Optimistic Lady Jackets hit the road

CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Cedarville University heads to Kentucky to begin the 2014-15 women's tennis campaign with a group that is confident enough to at least match last season's 17-win effort.

The Lady Jackets, 17-7 and 6-1 G-MAC a year ago, plays at NAIA Brescia today at 5:00 p.m. EDT before heading to Division II Southern Indiana for an encounter at noon EDT on Saturday. The home opener is Tuesday against Findlay at 4:00.

Five of the top six players return for Head Coach Dr. Dee Morris. She has totaled 102 wins in eight seasons and has been associated with CU women's tennis since 1977.

"If everything goes as I expect it to, we should be able to do just as well as we did last year," said Morris. "A lot depends, obviously, on the competition and our schedule is just a little bit different.

"And, it depends on how the freshmen come along because they have things to learn about playing the college game. We do have good players coming back including most of our starting line-up."

The Lady Jackets are set to play nine matches in the fall including three at home. However, besides attempting to regain the Great Midwest Athletic Conference championship they surrendered last year, they'll enter the spring with additional hopes of returning to the NCCAA.

"I think we have a viable opportunity to go to NCCAA Nationals," Morris added. "It is a good tournament. It would be a great experience for the kids and one I would like very much for them to have."
