LOUISVILLE, Ky. - It all came down to penalty kicks and No. 2 seed Bellarmine survived in advancing past No. 7 Cedarville, 4-3, in the second round of NCAA Division II Super Region 3.
The two sides played 110 minutes of scoreless soccer before having to settle matters via the shootout.
The 12th-ranked Knights remain unbeaten on the season at 16-0-5 while Cedarville's comes to a close with a 12-3-8 mark.
Bellarmine, playing in its first-ever NCAA post-season contest, outshot the visitors 22-4 overall and 9-2 on goal. They also had a 13-1 margin in corner kicks.
Carter Selvius came up with nine saves. The senior keeper and the Yellow Jacket back line produced their tenth shutout of the season.
Stinger Notes:
- Mauricio Ochoa Vazquez, Pedro Alvares, and Josiah Fragnito were successful on their PK's.
- The Jackets allowed only one goal in their last six-plus games covering 650 minutes.
- Selvius tied the school's single-season record of ten shutouts and his 17 career shutouts ties for third.
- The Jackets played back-to-back 0-0 draws for the first time in the 57-year history of the program.
- Cedarville is 1-1-2 in two appearances in the NCAA Division II Championship.
- The all-time series between the two schools is deadlocked at 2-2-1.
