ALLENDALE, Mich. - Top seed and defending NCAA Division II National Champion Grand Valley State required overtime to get by the No. 8 Lady Jackets, 2-1, in the first round of the Midwest Regional.
Cedarville ends the season at 12-6-2 after making the second NCAA appearance in the program's history.
The Lakers, 19-1-2, netted the game winner with 1:22 remaining in the first overtime to avoid the upset.
The Lady Jackets struck first when
Hannah Sareyka stunned GVSU with a 20-yarder into the left upper corner in the 29th minute.
It remained 1-0 until Grand Valley State finally equalized in the 73rd.
Stinger Notes:
- Goalkeeper Brooke Ackley made five saves.
- Shots were 18-4 in favor of GVSU including 7-2 on goal.
- Cedarville's only other appearance in the NCAA Championship was in 2015.
- Ackley's 0.54 goals against average is a CU season record and her nine shutouts ties for second.
- Grand Valley State leads the all-time series, 3-0.
