HIGHLIGHTS
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - United Soccer Coaches Preseason #22 Cedarville defeated Northwood 2-1 in double-overtime for a successful 2021 season opener at Yellow Jacket Field.
Mark Rowan scored the game winner, his ninth career goal, on a scramble in front of the net in the 107th minute to give Cedarville the non-conference victory over the Timberwolves (0-2).
Cedarville got on the board early when
Andy Volk one-timed a header from
Mauricio Ochoa Vazquez and placed a left-footer into the net in the eighth minute.
The Jackets held the 1-0 lead until Northwood tied things up with a goal three minutes into the second half. Cedarville pressured the Timberwolves in the final period with 10 shot attempts but could not grab the lead in regulation thus setting the stage for Rowan's heroics in the second OT period.
Jared Zacharias got the start in goal and made two saves.
Quotable: "I thought this was an important game for us to get off to good start on the season. It's very early and we have a lot to improve on over the next few months but I think we saw some good pieces to build on today. I'm excited about the grit of the guys to find a way to get a result. We will have to continue to grow and build our identity as a team as we progress. Today was a good first step in a long season." Head Coach
Brett Faro
