Big second half propels No. 9 Yellow Jackets over Northwood

MIDLAND, Mich. – United Soccer Coaches Division II No. 9 Cedarville broke loose in the second half for a 4-0 G-MAC victory at Northwood.

The outcome keeps the league-leading Yellow Jackets unbeaten at 9-0-5 overall and 7-0-3 G-MAC.

Eben Dewhurst made two saves and the defense locked up the Timberwolves for their school record sixth consecutive clean sheet.

After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, Eddie Merck broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute from Jack Maust for his second goal of the season.

The Jackets doubled their lead just over ten minutes later when Matthew Weller struck unassisted in the 64th minute.

Two more goals were added in the final quarter hour. Jackson Baker tallied his first of the year in the 77th minute off an assist from Jackson Dresser, and Matthew Leo capped the scoring in the 82nd minute from Yonis Velasquez.

Quotable: Head Coach Brett Faro
"Today was a tale of two halves. I felt like Northwood made it difficult for us in the first half and we did not play as well as we wanted on either side of the ball. I thought the guys responded really well at halftime. We needed to make some adjustments and the guys collectively stepped it up and did a great job in the second half to play to our standard. Malone was a tough fight at their place earlier in the year and we will need to recover quickly and regroup for another tough test Saturday."

Five Facts:
  • The shot differential was 16-2 in the decisive second half including 8-1 on goal.
  • CU had a 7-0 advantage on corner kicks.
  • The four goals scored matched the season high for one game (at Walsh).
  • Cedarville leads the all-time series vs. Northwood, 5-1.
  • The previous school record of five straight shutouts was set in 2012.
