In 2006, former Athletic Director Pete Reese purposed to find ways of preserving Cedarville University’s athletic heritage, and of honoring those alumni athletes of all sports whose exploits on field and court make up that history. A committee of coaches was constituted, and charged with the task of identifying those athlete alums who had outstanding careers in their sport, and in their era.
Coaches of each sport developed criteria for their respective sports. Sports information archives and yearbooks were searched; former coaches were interviewed, and finally lists of nominees were submitted. Those were reviewed and honorees were voted upon by the Legacy Committee.
The number of men and women who have competed for Yellow Jacket teams since 1953, and all the ways the athletic program has changed and grown, made the task huge. Over 300 men and women were identified by their coaching staffs, and approved by the Legacy Committee as "Athletes of Honor."
