Good morning Jacket fans.

We’re back and better than ever. This past week, the team took its talents down to the land of country music and BBQ for the Trevecca Music City Invitational. This week’s lineup consisted of Cody, Mitch, Isaak, me (Ben), and Isaac. We made the five hour drive down to Nashville on Sunday and arrived at Hermitage Golf Course General’s Retreat in the afternoon for our practice round.

And yes, the drive was not too enjoyable…especially those in the back row of the van. The course was not playing very long but its defense was definitely the greens. Some greens were quite small, but every single one had mounds and tiers and trenches in the middle of them. They were something special. The greens were also very grainy which took some getting used to but overall, the course was scoreable. The practice round only took about six hours because there were 15 teams playing and we were exhausted to say the least. Cedarville golf alumni, Dan Atkeson, and his son Ben came and followed along with us for a few holes. We got to spend some time with them last year, so it was great seeing them again and how big Ben had gotten. It’s always nice when past players get to connect with current players.

Round 1 was underway before we knew it and the forecast was not looking good. It rained off and on all day. Luckily we were finishing up when it really started to rain. The course got even more wet and we struggled. Woody played decent and led the way with a 75.

We were in Nashville, so naturally we had to find our way to some BBQ after our round. Pulled pork and brisket was just what we needed after a long and wet day on the course. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint. We then made our way to Crumbl Cookies, a cookie place that no one was ready for. If you ever get the chance to go…GO! And get the Nutella chocolate cookie. You will not be sorry.

It was another early morning on Tuesday and we had some unexpected guests make an appearance while we were warming up. Before we knew it, the practice area was swarmed by a herd of friendly and not so friendly sheep. Yes, sheep. There are about 20 to 30 sheep who roam the two courses and wanted to check out what all these people were doing on their course. Players would try to get close for photo ops with them, but had to get a picture quickly before the sheep would charge. And when I say the sheep wanted all the smoke, they wanted ALL THE SMOKE. It was nice to have a little surprising comedic relief before we played round 2.

It was a beautiful sunny day around 70 degrees. We played better as a team and improved round 2 by 12 shots. Codes led the way with a 70, followed by Woody with a 72, and both ended up T-25th . Mitch also played well with a second round 74.

We are really close to bringing it all together and playing well so hopefully next week we will be able to be right in the mix of things. We will play the Findlay Spring Invitational on March 29th and 30th in Lexington, Kentucky so stay tuned.

But until then,

God Bless and Go Jackets!

Hellooo everyone!

Welcome back to the Golf Blog! It’s been a hot second since the last blog but don’t fret…I am here as your personal liaison for everything Cedarville Golf for the Spring 2021 Season. For those just joining us, let me reintroduce myself. I am Ben Sheard. I’m a senior marketing major and this will be my very last season on the golf team…but we don’t need to get into that right now, so we’ll postpone the waterworks for later. But, let me get you up to speed on everything.

This winter was a very cold, very windy, very typical Cedarville winter. We have been taking advantage of our very nice indoor facility we got a few years ago. This has been instrumental in the team’s ability to practice during the winter and be ready to compete come spring. We did get a new addition to the team room that everyone has been super excited about. The program was able to get a brand new simulator. Our old one was a bit outdated and giving up the ghost so this upgrade was very much needed. It has been very nice to have accurate numbers that facilitate making swing changes a lot easier as well. All to say, it has been very nice and the boys have been grindinggg. The snow may have stopped us from playing outside, but it wasn’t able to stop the grind inside.

Because we were unable to qualify due to the snow, coach decided the lineup for the first tournament, the Columbia International Invitational in Columbia, South Carolina. The top five were as follows: Codes (Cody), Mighty Mitch (Mitch), Ramsauce (Isaak Ramsey), Dyl (Dylan), and Woody (Isaac Wood)…also Stim-Dawg (Caleb) as the individual. The team went down a few days early to play some before game time.

Firethorne Country Club was the first stop in Marvin, North Carolina. The team played with a guy named Terry, a member hosting us that coach knows. Terry was a great host and very hip. A great time was had. It was good to shake some of the rust off and have many laughs as Terry watched us tear apart the golf course…but not the way we usually do.

Then the boys went to Columbia SC and played Ridgewood on Sunday. Ridgewood was a very tight and wet golf course, but not as tight as Firethorne. Not too many notable highlights other than coach almost skulling a hole-in-one only to lose the inner squad match play. Wish him better luck next time if you get the chance. The guys were feeling better after having a couple rounds under their belt.

Monday came and the conditions were about as bad as they could have been. Hoping to get away to some nice warm sun, the guys were met with clouds and rain all day long. We got off to a bad start with Mighty Mitch leading the way with a 78 followed by 79’s from Codes and Woody. The team was sitting in fifth place after Day 1. There was work to done.

Tuesday rolled around and some freshman heroics were on early display before even leaving the hotel. A little girl let go of her balloon next to the team and as it floated aimlessly in the air, Dyl leaped out of the van to grab it and save the day. He’s such a great guy. It was perfect conditions for Round 2 and the boys were ready to turn it around. Codes shot 74 and Woody shot 79 but the team ended up finishing in fourth place and Codes finished in sixth. The team definitely struggled to get back in the swing of things but we’re ready to play well in Nashville this Monday and Tuesday.

Be sure to tune back in for a recap from Tennessee!

As always,

God Bless and Go Jackets!

Welcome back Jacket Fans!!

It’s hard to believe that this is the final installment of our Fall 2020 Golf Blog. This past Monday we played in our home tournament, The Cedarville Invitational (my last time doing so). It’s bittersweet playing in this tournament for the last time but I wouldn’t have wanted to do it with another group of guys. This Invitational was moved from its usual destination, Country Club of the North, to the other side of town at Beavercreek Golf Club. With the fall foliage in full bloom, we were hoping to end the season on a high note with a win. This week’s lineup consisted of Cody, Isaak, Mitch, Josh, and Dyl. The guys had a good first round which put them in first with a team score of 294. Dyl led the way for the whole field with a 2-under 70 and Cody right behind him with a 71. Other notables from Round 1 were Isaac with a 73 and Ramsey and Bubba with a pair of 75’s. Conditions were not bad, but the greens were tricky and FAST (They were rolling a 13 in the morning).

As the second round began, the wind decided to pick up a little which makes the course a bit trickier along with drying the greens out some and the scores reflected that. The freshman, Dyl, didn’t have quite the finish he was looking for with a 78, but I’m sure never having been in that position in a collegiate tournament had some influence. I can also say pretty confidently that he will have more chances to get the job done as he continues to get better. Cody also came up just short once again with a second round 75 and a third place finish. Cody has been really close a few times now and it’s only a matter of time before he can seal the deal. Other notable Round 2 scores included Woody with a solid 74, Caleb with a 75, and Mitch with a 76.

(While I did not play particularly well on Monday, I did have one better than usual hole as I holed out from 117 yards on my last swing of the day (and season) for an eagle 2 on the par 4 fifth hole. It was the first time I have ever holed out from the fairway before, so it was an exciting end to a less than exciting round!)

Ohio Dominican had a better second round and shot a team total of 291 to come from behind to take first while we shot a 307…not the way we wanted to end our Fall season BUT even more motivation to get better this off season. I know all the guys want to grind this winter and come back in the Spring stronger than ever.

This season truly has flown by, but not without its ups and downs. We had plenty of bad golf holes, great golf holes, and plenty of laughs along the way. Even with our shortened season and COVID protocols, we were able to make the most of it and have fun while giving thanks and glory to God.

For those that read these, I’d like to extend thank you from myself and from the team for your continual support. Hopefully you get some enjoyment from reading week to week. This is my first time doing a Blog of any sorts so hopefully it isn’t too bad! Anyway, I’ll be picking back up in the Spring (Lord willing) after a productive winter and lots of hard work.

Until then,

God bless and Go Jackets!

Hellooo Jacket Fans!

Welcome to this week’s installment of the golf Blog! Last week we did not have a tournament and we had a nice little break from competitive golf. We practiced hard all week as we competed in inner squad matches and prepared for our last two tournaments of the year.

This week, our entire team was playing in the Tiffin Memorial at Tiffin University. We loaded the three vans up on Sunday and made the 2 ½ hour trek to Tiffin, Ohio. Sunday was cold and raining all day, so needless to say it was not necessarily the most enjoyable day on the links. But, we got our prep in for Monday and Tuesday and we were ready to get after it.

We got to the course in the dark on Monday and it was cold and foggy. After warmups were over, there was still fog and everyone was delayed 30 minutes. After the delay, we were all sent to our tees for the shotgun start where we waited for the fog to clear for another hour. After a late start, we were finally able to begin playing at 11 a.m. We didn’t know if we were going to finish 36 holes because of the late start and most players only were able to get 34 or 35 holes in before the horn blew.

Cody led the team on Day 1 shooting 3 over (72-75) and was one of the only players to actually finish their second round. Josh continued his good play shooting 74 and other freshman Dyl, shot 79. Dyl played better the second go-around on Monday with a 75. Ramsey and Stimmel rounded out the A-Team shooting 80. Mitch and Rob also played well in Round 1 conditions with a pair of 76’s.

Tuesday began by finishing out Round 2 and then we began Round 3 play. Conditions on Tuesday were a little warmer and much more windy. There was a constant breeze with gusts up to 20ish mph. Cody continued his consistent play with a 74, Josh bounced back from Round 2 with a 75, and Ramsey bounced back to shoot 76. Mitch also finished out Round 3 with another 76 (which will put him in the Top 5 for next week).

We did not have the tournament we were looking to have but we move on and grow from it. We now set our sights to the last tournament of the year, the Cedarville Invitational. We will be changing the location of our home tournament from Country Club of the North to Beavercreek Golf Club this year. We are hoping to play our best and finish the fall off on a high note!

For those that gave to Cedarville Athletics, “Greater Than The Game” and the golf team, we would like to send a huge thank you your way! It is through those gifts that we are able to continue to play the game we love but more importantly, glorify God through our playing. So, THANK YOU!

Thanks for reading and as always,

God Bless and Go Jackets!

Hello once again Yellow Jacket fans!!

Welcome to another week of the golf blog! We last left off with our fourth-place finish at the Malone Invitational and that is where we pick up this week.

After our performance at Malone, we realized that we have some work to do as a team if we want to start being in contention. So we’ve put our heads down and grinded hard the last week. There were some changes to the Top 5 for this past week’s Findlay Fall Invitational. Husovich played his way into the Top 5 claiming the fifth spot and replacing Isaac for the week. This week’s Top 5 is as follows: Cody, Isaak (Ramsauce), Caleb (Stimmdog), Josh (Husovich), and Dylan (Dyl). Bubba also played his way into an individual position with his play the last two weeks.

Something that I have not addressed yet is the impact that COVID has had on our season. Because golf is a low-risk sport, we (luckily) only had to get tested in the beginning of our season. We were all pretty thankful when we heard that because as a lot of you probably know, the test is not the most pleasant. In addition to that, we also have to get our temperature checked and symptom check every day before we practice. So far, no one on our team has experienced any symptoms and we would appreciate prayer that it would stay that way.

How we travel to tournaments has also changed. We take two vans to each tournament and we sit next to our “pod mate.” A pod is just two people that are in close proximity to one another. They sit next to each other on the trip and are roommates. This way, if one guy starts to show symptoms, only one other person has to quarantine instead of the entire team. We must stay in our room only and are not allowed to visit other teammate’s rooms. And probably the most disappointing rule: we are unable to use any of the hot tubs at the hotels. This one was really a shot to the gut as this is usually a very nice bonus as we are on the road.

Anyway, the guys left the ‘Ville last Sunday to play the practice round and prepare for 36 holes on Monday. Round 1 was a struggle for the Jackets. Husovich led the way in Round 1 shooting a
76, followed by Dylan’s 77, Cody’s 78, Ramsey’s 80, and Caleb’s 81. Needless to say, the guys had some work to do. Round 2 came around and the guys started to find a groove. Cody played
well and shot 1-under, Ramsey shot 73, Dylan shot 76, Stimmel shot 80, and Husovich brought up the rear with an 83. After Day 1 the team found themselves sitting in 10th place.

Day 2 arrived with a brisk morning and dew on the ground. The team picked up right where they left off in Round 2. Ramsey played his best round of the year shooting 1-under with Cody
right behind him firing a 75. Cody and Ramsey ended up tying and finishing T-23rd as they led the team once again, which seems to be becoming a theme. Stimmel coming off of a tough Day
1, shot a third round 77 along with Husovich. Dylan was not too far behind either shooting a final round 78. Bubba did not have his best week and finished with rounds of 87-82-83.

Isaak and Cody have continued their solid play and are excited about where their games are trending. Dyl and Josh, two freshmen, have been picking up some of the slack and finding a
place where they have been able to contribute early on and we hope to see them continue to improve as the year progresses.

We have a week off and then we will play at the Tiffin Memorial at the Mohawk Golf and Country Club on October 5th & 6th. Everyone will be playing at this tournament so it will be a fun week and the guys are looking forward to it.

Check out Twitter and Instagram for other updates and news regarding the team.

Thanks for reading this week’s installment!

God bless & Go Jackets!

Hello Jacket Fans!!

We have the first tournament of the year in the books. Our week began by playing in a 54-hole qualifier which determined the traveling line-up. After some grueling rounds in the heat, the line-up was set. Isaak Ramsey played well all week coming in first place, followed by Cody Cogdill (who gained exemption by winning the third round), then Isaac Wood and Caleb Stimmel who went low during the first round, and Dylan Ledford. We were also taking an individual and the freshman out of Simi Valley, California, Josh Husovich, played well enough to take that 6th spot.

On Sunday, the guys traveled to Glenmoor Country Club in Canton, Ohio for the Malone Invitational. After getting there in the morning and spending all day on the course and practicing, the guys were ready for 36 holes the next day. Other than being breezy at times, conditions were good for rounds 1 and 2. Cody had a very good day leading the way for the Jackets on Day 1 with a 71-76. Isaak and Caleb followed by shooting 77-77 and 81-73 respectively. Dylan rounded out the scores that counted shooting 80-78. Isaac struggled and did not have the best day, but was ready to turn it around and contribute on Day 2. Josh had a good first round but struggled during the second round with scores of 74-82. After Day 1, Cody was right in the mix of things at the top of the leader board looking to secure the first win of his collegiate career.

Day 2 was soon here and the Jackets were looking to make moves and jump a few places on the leader board. Isaak, continuing his solid play, shot 76 and finished the tournament T-13th . Isaac, Caleb, Josh and Dylan struggled to find a rhythm and ended up shooting 80, 81, 79, and 79. Cody once again led the way for the Jackets firing a 1-under 71, finishing at +2 for the tournament and tied for first place.

Cody thus found himself in a sudden death playoff with one other player who was just as hungry for his first win. With adrenaline pumping, both players pounded drivers down the 18th fairway. Cody stuck a 7 iron from 197 yards to 15 feet pin high, while his competitor hit his approach to about 25 feet. The tension mounted as they approached the green with a small crowd forming atop the bowl that funneled down to the green. The other player ended up making his putt to put the pressure on and Cody’s putt just burned the high edge. It was over but Cody put up a good fight and had a great tournament. With this finish, Cody tied for the fourth-best 54 hole score in Cedarville golf history. Be sure to congratulate him if you see him or send him a message on social media!

The team finished 4th out of 6 with scores of 309-304-306 (919). This was not the start that we were looking for to our season, but we learned a lot and are going to continue to practice and get a little better every day.

The Jackets tee it up next on Sept. 21-22 for the Findlay Fall Invitational hosted by the University of Findlay. Be sure to check Twitter, Instagram and the Yellow Jacket website for updates and info!

Thanks for reading and hope you tune back in again soon!

God bless and Go Jackets!

Welcome back Jacket fans!!!

My name is Ben Sheard and I have the pleasure of being this year’s golf blogger! With this blog. I’d like to give you all an inside look at the golf program, tournaments, and everyday life as a Cedarville University golfer.

We last left off with an abrupt end to our spring season when we were all sent home due to COVID. It was disappointing not being able to play our championship season and even more heartbreaking for the two seniors who were unable to play their last semester of collegiate athletics. The five months back home was a long break from the normal college life that some of us have known for the last three years and it was not always the easiest. But, we have all gotten through it and are now looking ahead to what’s next!

Our team feels extremely blessed to be able to play this year as many of the other sports are having to be postponed. We have a very exciting year ahead of us, so let’s meet the 2020-21 Cedarville men’s golf team…

This year we have four seniors: Mitchell Creamer, Isaac Wood, Kyle Tillinghast, and Benjamin Sheard. The two seniors graduating last year were vital components to the team’s Top 5, so this year’s seniors are looking to fill those spots. Isaac has contributed a lot in his time at Cedarville and will be looking to finish his career on a high note. We know that upperclassmen experience will be very beneficial in this COVID-regulated season and hope to see some of the other seniors play well this year.

Those returning for the junior class are Cody Cogdill, Isaak Ramsey, and Rob Harris. Cody is coming off of another good year and has been another key player these past two years. Isaak also played well last year, but has a lot of potential to be another one of the team’s top guys. Rob is looking to have a bounce back year and contribute a lot to our team goals.

Caleb Stimmel is the only returning sophomore this year. Caleb also played well last year and is looking to get even better and contribute even more. We also have a new sophomore addition in Will Evans. Will is a transfer student from Tiffin University who will not be able to play this year due to eligibility reasons, but we are excited for him to join the team and add some more talent to the sophomore class.

We are also welcoming three new freshmen this year! Joshua Husovich is from Simi Valley, California, Kemit Spears Jr (goes by Bubba) is from Gulfport, Mississippi, and finally Dylan Ledford is from Applecreek, Ohio. All the guys are excited for them to join the team and can already see the value they’ll bring.

We tee it up for the first time at the Glenmoor Fall Classic hosted by Malone University in Canton, Ohio on Monday-Tuesday, September 14th-15th. Keep up-to-date with live scoring (when available) and on Golfstat.com as well as our Twitter (@CUMensGolf) and Instagram (cumensgolf) accounts.

We are looking forward to an awesome season and excited to have you follow along!

Check back next week as we look at our first tournament of the year. Thanks for reading, and as always, God bless and Go Jackets!
