Cedarville claims NAIA region crown

CANTON, Ohio (5-5-2006) - Cedarville will return to the NAIA National Tournament for the first time in 13 years after blanking defending champion Walsh, 5-0, in the Region IX final. It was the 16th consecutive win for the Yellow Jackets, 20-4 overall, who have not lost since a 5-4 setback to the Cavaliers, 15-6, back on March 31.

Head coach Alan Edlund had never won the region in his previous 11 years as head coach and he has had to watch his squad lose to Walsh in the title match in each of the past five seasons. This time, CU took immediate command after sweeping the doubles. The #1 duo of Tim Hartman and Jake Bezeck set the pace with an 8-4 win. Jacob Rogers and Dan Ballard were 8-5 victors at the #2 position while #3 Mike Rhoads and Kevin Furst held on for an 8-6 decision.

The Jackets clinched the championship after their top two singles players posted victories. Hartman's numbers were 6-4, 6-1 and Bezeck's were 6-1, 6-4. Cedarville held the lead in three of the remaining four matches that were not completed.

Cedarville used to make an annual trip to the NAIA Nationals when the teams of NAIA Hall of Fame coach Murray Murdoch dominated the scene in the 60's, 70's, 80's, and early 90's. Edlund was part of the program as a player from 1972 to 1975. The Jackets' last NAIA appearance was in 1993 in which they won their 23rd NAIA District 22 title in a span of 26 years.
