Wes Rowe named new Lady Jacket softball coach

CEDARVILLE, Ohio (6-11-2007) - Wes Rowe has been named the new head softball coach at Cedarville University. He replaces Kathy Freese, who stepped in on an interim basis to coach the team during the 2007 season.

Rowe, who was a four-year starter with the Yellow Jacket baseball team from 1974-78, returns to his alma mater after serving one year as the girls softball varsity assistant coach at Milan High School in Michigan. Prior to that, he was involved in coaching the highly-successful Michigan Dominators 18U travel team in Ann Arbor.

"We are excited to have Wes Rowe join our staff," commented CU athletic director Pete Reese. "As an alumnus, he is quite familiar with the University and what our mission in athletics is. He has a solid softball background and we are confident that he will have a positive influence on our program both on and off the field."

Rowe was a starting outfielder during his four-year college baseball career before graduating from Cedarville in 1978. He and his wife, Ann, have had three of their children attend the University one of which is their daughter, Charissa, who has been a two-year outfielder with the Lady Jackets and now has the opportunity to play for her father.

"I am elated to return to the University where I began my own walk with Christ and learned how to live the Christian life," said Rowe. "Now, to be able to return and coach softball and disciple other young persons brings great joy and satisfaction to my heart.

"I have coached lots of fast pitch softball, mainly girls of the high school age, and we have been phenomenally successful. College softball should allow me to work with highly-skilled athletes and players that desire to compete at the highest level. I really desire to build the Cedarville program into a top tier program.

"I also want to produce godly young women who want to serve Jesus Christ through the local church throughout their entire lives. As a pastor, I love local church ministry and am very committed to it."

Rowe has served as the senior pastor of Calvary Bible Church of Ann Arbor, Mich. since 1988 and he will enter the realm of college coaching with a unique arrangement. The church has allotted him time away from ministry in order to coach the Lady Jackets. This will also allow the Rowe's youngest son, Samuel, to complete his final two years at Milan High School.

Rowe served as head coach of the Michigan Dominators 18U travel team for three seasons. His 2005 squad won four tournaments; the 2004 team placed 4th out of 44 teams at the USSSA World Series and earned the Sportsmanship Award in voting by all competing teams; and the 2003 club finished 5th in the NSA World Series and 7th in the Super World Series.

Rowe was the assistant coach of the Michigan Mustangs 16U team in 2002 that finished as the USSSA World Series runner-up. He previously served as head coach of the Calvary Christian Academy baseball team in Ypsilanti, Mich. for the 2000 campaign.
