The NAIA Division II #15 Yellow Jackets open the home portion of their schedule this weekend with the 32nd Annual Cedarville Invitational. The Jackets welcome in Point Park, Rio Grande, and Trevecca Nazarene for Friday's doubleheader action. In the first game at 6:00 p.m., fellow AMC member Point Park is matched up with NAIA Division I foe Trevecca Nazarene, while Cedarville and Rio will tangle in the 8:00 p.m. nightcap.
The Jackets and RedStorm will be meeting for the second time in 13 days; the previous match-up saw Cedarville set a school scoring record in a lopsided 157-91 triumph. Rio enters this weekend with a 3-2 record, led by senior P.J. Rase's 17.5 ppg. The RedStorm also lean heavily on sophomore forward Bud Teer, who's averaging a double-double on the young season (11.3 points, 11.5 rebounds per game).
After more than 100 meetings between the in-state rivals, the all-time series is knotted at 52 wins apiece. If Cedarville can knock off the visitors for the second time this season, the Jackets will play the Trevecca Nazarene/Point Park winner on Saturday evening.
Trevecca has started the season strong, as they'll enter the weekend with a 4-0 record. The Trojans are outscoring their opponents by more than 30 points a game, led by three double-figure scorers: Matthew Elliott, Michael France, and Jeremy Dixon.
The Pioneers of Point Park are 2-3, but feature a balanced roster with five players averaging at least 12 points a game: T.J. Heatherington leads the way at 16.5 ppg, followed by Josh Trocchio, Devon Alexander, Eric Johnson, and Marcus Robinson.
It should be a great weekend of basketball in the Callan Athletic Center with some quality opponents coming to town, and I look forward to live-blogging both Cedarville games for any of you that can't make it out to see the Jackets in person. I'll provide in-game commentary and analysis from the opening tip to the final whistle, while the interactive format will allow readers to vote in polls, send in questions, and share comments and thoughts as the Yellow Jackets look for another Cedarville Invitational title.
