CEDARVILLE, Ohio – Cedarville University softball coach
Wes Rowe has added another key element to his 2010 squad. Kendra Kassonie recently signed a letter of intent to further her education at CU and join the Lady Jacket softball program.
Kassonie, a 5-foot 2-inch speedster and senior at Wake Christian Academy in Raleigh, North Carolina, recently broke the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state record for stolen bases with the 134th swipe of her career. As the leadoff batter, Kassonie helped lead the Bulldogs to the Class 3A North Carolina Christian Schools' state championship last spring. She posted a .655 batting average with 82 runs scored and 52 stolen bases.
While she was pursued by other schools – including some in North Carolina and Pennsylvania – Kassonie chose Cedarville for several reasons.
“They have a very good communications program, and I would like to pursue something in that area,” she said. “It's an awesome school with a real good atmosphere. I visited last September and everyone was so encouraging and willing to do whatever it took to make me feel comfortable.”
Coach Rowe is impressed with Kassonie's speed to first base - 2.78 seconds from the left side - and is pleased with his newest recruit. “She has that savvy that you can't teach; you either have it or you don't and she's got it!” he said. “Because of her excellent speed, I plan to bat her at the top of the lineup and she will be given every opportunity to win the starting shortstop position. Kendra has been very well prepared for college ball and there is no doubt in my mind she will do very well.”
Kendra is the daughter of Dan and Sheri Kassonie of Clayton, North Carolina.
