CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Cedarville University graduates and former All-America distance runners Erin (Nehus) Vergara and Sergio Reyes both placed in the Top 25 of their respective divisions in the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in Houston on Jan. 14.
Vergara finished 23rd out of 152 competitors in the women's race. She covered the 26 miles, 385 yards in 2:37:06.
Reyes was 25th of among 85 men's participants. His time was 2:15:41.
The top three women's and top three men's finishers advanced to represent the United States at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Vergara was a three-time NAIA and NCCAA All-American in cross country during her CU career from 1999 through 2003. She paced the Lady Jackets to the 2001 NAIA title which was the school's only NAIA championship in any sport.
Vergara was a member of two NCCAA banner teams and was the national individual champion in 2001. On the track, she was a four-time NAIA Outdoor All-American and twice earned the honor indoors.
Reyes transferred to Cedarville in the fall of 2000 and assembled an outstanding two-year career with the Yellow Jackets. He was a two-time NAIA All-American in cross country placing 6th in 2000 and 4th in 2002. Reyes was a two-time NCCAA All-American and was the 2002 national champion. (He did not run the 2001 cross country season.)
Reyes was a six-time NAIA All-American on the track in 2001 and 2002. He was the 2002 NAIA Outdoor 10,000 meter champion and was the NCCAA Outstanding Performer of the Meet that same year. Reyes still holds school records in the indoor 5K as well as the outdoor 5K and 10K.
