MASON, Ohio -
Jordan Ammon and
Ryan Ledbetter combined on a one-hitter and
Chris Ward drove in the game's only run as No. 1 Cedarville escaped No. 5 Southeastern, 1-0, in pool play at the NCCAA Division I Baseball Championship.
It was more seventh inning theatrics that Cedarville, 38-11 overall, had to endure at Prasco Park. The Fire were poised for a walk off victory when they had runners at first and third with nobody out.
Ledbetter got the first out with a strikeout swinging and then threw a baserunner out at the plate on an attempted squeeze play. With runners at first and third, the sophomore righthander ended it with a swinging strikeout on a 3-2 pitch for his sixth save.
It was a pitchers' duel from the get-go. Ammon wiggled out of a jam in the fifth when Southeastern had runners at second and third with no one out.
Cedarville responded with its run in the sixth when
Cam McWilliams set the stage with a leadoff infield single. He moved up on
Paul Hembekides' sacrifice bunt and advanced to third when
Alex Beelen fouled out to the right fielder.
Ward stepped up and grounded an 0-2 pitch into the hole in left field to give CU the only run it needed.
Ammon improved to 9-2 with the win. He struck out six in six-plus innings and allowed one hit on a fifth-inning double.
McWilliams had two hits. The only other safety besides Ward's was a single in the second inning by
Nate Davenport.
Hembekides became CU's all-time walks leader with his 126th career base on balls in the third inning. He broke the old mark of 125 set by
Tyler Rost from 2008-11.
Southeastern, who hammered the Jackets 12-4 in CU's third game of the season in Florida, drops to 31-28.
