MASON, Ohio -
Ryan Ledbetter struck out the final two batters with runners in scoring position to preserve the No. 1 seeded Yellow Jackets' 5-4 victory over No. 8 Emmanuel (Ga.) to open pool play at the NCCAA Division I Baseball Championship at Prasco Park.
Ledbetter's fifth save of the season secured another victory for
Michael Roe, 10-0, who became the first pitcher in CU's 100-plus year baseball history to win 10 games in a single season.
However, it didn't come to pass until the Jackets, 37-11 overall, survived some drama in the seventh inning despite entering the frame with a 5-3 lead.
The first two Lions reached base against Roe bringing in Ledbetter to finish it. He then walked a batter to load the bases with no one out.
Emmanuel got a sacrifice fly for the first out and then put its two remaining runners in scoring position with a double steal. Ledbetter proceeded to fan the next two hitters to end it.
Ledbetter contributed at the plate, too, going 3-for-3 with an RBI. Twin brother
David Ledbetter was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Logan Kasabian and
Alex Beelen tallied two hits apiece.
Chris Ward added a two-run double.
Emmanuel falls to 31-26.
