MASON, Ohio - No. 9 seed Nyack made the most of a big first inning to stun the No. 1 Yellow Jackets, 3-1, to open the second day of play at the NCCAA Division I Baseball Championship at Legacy Field.
Cedarville could have clinched a spot in Friday's semifinals with a win. Now, the Jackets must either beat No. 4 Olivet Nazarene tonight or get some help through a tiebreaker if they should suffer another setback.
The Warriors, 26-26 overall, scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the first inning. They benefitted from a walk, catcher's interference, two errors, and three hits including a wind blown home run.
Starting pitcher
David Ledbetter, 7-3, was dominant after the rough start, but the offense could not overcome the deficit. The sophomore righthander allowed just two hits over the final six innings and struck out six batters total.
The Yellow Jackets, 38-12, had their best chance for a big inning in the fifth when they loaded the bases with one out. They got their only run when
Alex Beelen lined a shot to the left fielder that scored pinch runner
Dan Larkin.
