Roe ties record, but CU pushed to deciding game

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. - Starting pitcher Michael Roe matched a longstanding record and Nate Davenport hammered a key grand slam in a victory, but Spring Arbor salvaged a twinbill split forcing a final game at the NCCAA Midwest Regional.

The Yellow Jackets won the opener, 4-2, in the best 2-of-3 series while the Cougars took the nightcap, 3-2.

Thursday's championship game begins at 2:00 p.m. The winner earns an automatic berth to the NCCAA National Tournament in Mason, Ohio.

CU was the home team in the first game and Davenport's big fly in the bottom of the fourth inning gave the Jackets a 4-1 lead. It was his ninth homer of the year and matched the school-record 61 RBI's he set in 2011.

Cedarville totaled just four hits and Chris Ward had two of them. Roe, 9-0, struck out three batters in six innings while Ryan Ledbetter worked the final frame for his third save.

Roe's nine victories equals a 49-year old Cedarville single-season record. Norris Smith had nine wins in 1963.

The two schools battled to the end of game two. Logan Kasabian's two-out single in the top of the seventh inning tied it, 2-2. SAU won it with a two-out single in the bottom half.

Ward had two more hits including a double for Cedarville, 35-11 overall. Spring Arbor is 39-17.
