AZUSA, Calif. -
James Blackwell totaled 6,656 points to break the school record in the decathlon with his performance at the 43rd Annual Mt. SAC Relays/California Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific University.
Blackwell's effort eclipsed the previous mark of 6,551 set by his coach, Mike Marsh, in the 2001 NCCAA Championship. He had already met the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying standard earlier in the season at the University of Cincinnati Open.
Blackwell placed 7th of 13 competitors in the “A” section of the California Invitational. A total of 104 athletes competed in three sections of the men's decathlon and two sections of the women's heptathlon.
The single best event for Blackwell came in the pole vault. He cleared a winning mark of 4.85 meters (15-11).
The sophomore from Clare, Mich. was third in the 1,500 meters (4:42.21) and sixth in the discus (36.64m; 120-2).
