CEDARVILLE, Ohio - NAIA Division II #3 Cedarville held off #7 Shawnee State, 82-71, in the Callan Athletic Center to maintain sole possession of first place in the American Mideast Conference.
The Lady Jackets, 23-3 overall and 14-1 AMC, never trailed in what was their 15th consecutive victory. Solid free throw shooting down the stretch sealed the outcome after a big lead had been trimmed to two points.
Cedarville eased out to a 38-29 halftime margin and expanded the bulge to 53-35 early in the second period. However, the Bears rallied and got as close as 61-59 with 6:25 left.
The Jackets only scored three field goals in the final six minutes, but they converted 15-of-16 free throws to slowly regain command.
Alison Lemon fired in a game-high 21 points to go along with five assists. Aubrey Siemon erupted for her 18th double-double of the season with 19 points and 21 rebounds. Lydia Miller tallied 18 points and Caitlyn Brooks chipped in 10.
Cedarville made 20-of-22 free throws in the second half and was 23-of-26 for the game. The Jackets also enjoyed a 51-31 rebounding advantage.
Shawnee State, 19-5 and 11-3 AMC, had its seven-game winning streak snapped. The Bears host CU in the regular season finale on Feb. 20. [STATS]
