DAYTON, Ohio - The Yellow Jackets opened the season with a 5K race at the University of Dayton Challenge where they finished 3rd behind the effort of Evan Thayer.

Shawnee State won the seven-team intercollegiate division with 28 points while Ashland was the runner-up in 46 points. Cedarville was next with 80 points.

Thayer was clocked in 16:05 to place 4th. Ryan Gustafson was 14th in 16:19 and Matt Cheney was 19th in 16:28.

The rest of CU's top seven included Joe Niemiec (21st; 16:21), Greg Johnson (22nd; 16:36), Clay Watson (23rd; 16:39), and Jacob Walter (25th; 16:42).
