BRACKET | ALVARES' WINNING PK | SELVIUS' 4TH SAVE
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -
Carter Selvius made four stops in eight rounds of PK's and No. 7 seed Cedarville advanced past No. 10 Wisconsin-Parkside in the first round of NCAA Division II Super Region 3.
The two sides played to a 0-0 draw in two overtimes with the Yellow Jackets moving on via PK's, 5-4.
Cedarville, 12-3-7, will face host and No. 2 seed Bellarmine, 16-0-4, in Saturday's second round at 6:30 p.m. EST.
All of the drama following 110 minutes of soccer was saved for the penalty shootout. The Rangers, who kicked first, had chances to win the eight-round PK affair no less than three times.
Trailing 3-1,
Josiah Fragnito kept CU alive by converting to wrap up the fourth round. Then, UWP could have advanced a second time with a goal to start the fifth round, but Selvius came up with his second denial.
Facing elimination again, it was up to
Nick Marculo, who calmly scored to knot the score 3-3 through the required five rounds before heading to sudden death PK's.
Tied at 4-4 in the eighth round, Selvius made another stop and
Pedro Alvares ended it with a clean goal into the left side of the net.
