CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Midwest Region No. 2 seed Cedarville defeated No. 7 McKendree, 3-1, in the first round of the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship at the Yellow Jacket Soccer Complex.
The Lady Jackets, 17-3-1, advance to host No. 6 Ferris State in a second round battle on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. EST.
Cedarville tallied in the 32nd minute when
Sophie Browndyke redirected a cross from
Maya Ryder off the left post and in for her first career goal.
The Bearcats needed just a little more than two minutes after intermission to equalize.
The turning point came in the 80th minute when
Mary Kate Wyer was tripped in the box and converted the ensuing penalty kick.
Addie Erslan accounted for the final with 25 seconds remaining on a 20-yard strike off the underside of the crossbar.
Stinger Notes:
- It was the first women's soccer meeting between the two schools.
- McKendree had the overall shot advantage, 13-9, and shots on goal were even at 4-4.
- The Bearcats, who finish 13-2-5, were unbeaten in their first 18 games of the year.
- It's Cedarville's third trip to the NCAA Championship and the school's first victory.
- Ferris State tied No. 3 Ashland, 1-1 in 2OT, and then moved on via penalty kicks, 7-6.
