Eagles retain G-MAC trophy; blank Lady Jackets

HIGHLIGHTS  |  CHAMPIONSHIP INFO

CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Defending champion and No. 2 seed Ashland held on to shut down top seed and 13th-ranked Cedarville, 1-0, in the G-MAC Women's Soccer Championship game.

It was an intriguing rematch between the league's top two sides which was played in winds blowing 25-30 mph.

The Eagles took advantage of having the gusts at their back in the first half. The visitors got all they needed by pocketing an unassisted goal in the 14th minute.

The Lady Jackets, which had their 13-game winning streak snapped, applied persistent pressure the rest of the way outshooting the visitors 11-1 in the second period. They fall to 16-3-1.

The Eagles earn the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division II Championship. Cedarville expects to earn a bid as well when the brackets are released Monday night.

Stinger Notes:
  • CU had the shot advantage, 13-4 overall and 7-3 on goal.
  • Only three fouls total were whistled and just five corner kicks combined were attempted.
  • Marisa Hoober, Megan McClish, and Carlie Stutzman were named to the all-tournament team.
  • The Lady Jackets have been the G-MAC Tournament runner-up in each of the last three years.
  • The 13-game winning streak began with a 2-1 home win vs. No. 24 Ashland on Sept. 17.
  • The Eagles have not lost since that date going 10-0-2.
  • Ashland leads the all-time series, 4-2, with all six meetings decided by one goal.
