Wheeling doubles up CU in opener

OWENSBORO, Ky. - Wheeling jumped on the Lady Jackets early and went on to an 8-4 win in frigid conditions in the Blue Bridge Battle at Jack C. Fischer Park.

The Cardinals scored three times in the first inning and twice more in the second for a 5-0 lead.

Faith Bergner tallied two hits including a triple with a run scored for Cedarville.

Mackenzie Russell made her collegiate debut with a single and an RBI. 

Arica Flaugher, Lauryn Leslie, McKenna Smith, and Mariah Wallace added base hits for the Jackets.

Starting pitcher Casey Bertke struck out five in five innings pitched allowing three earned runs.

Stinger Notes:
  • The game time temperature was 31 degrees with a wind chill of 23.
  • Flaugher, Smith, and Kaley Clark scored the other runs.
  • Smith also pitched two innings - her first appearance inside the circle since 2020.
