Lady Jackets edged in five-set thriller with Maryville

HAMMOND, Ind. — Cedarville came up just short in a back-and-forth five-set match, falling 23–25, 25–22, 30–28, 19–25, 15–13 to Maryville to close out Day 1 at the Midwest Region Crossover.

The Lady Jackets opened strong, taking the first set 25–23 behind efficient hitting and early service pressure. After dropping the second and third sets in tight fashion, including a marathon 30–28 battle, Cedarville responded with a dominant 25–19 fourth frame to force a deciding fifth. Maryville held off a late Cedarville rally to close out the match 15–13.

Madelyn Hensley led the Lady Jackets with 20 kills while hitting .269 to go with three blocks. Cassi Shields added 17 kills and 19 digs for a double-double.

Allie Pilat delivered 16 kills on .250 hitting and chipped in nine digs. Setter Kaley Matney paced the offense with 58 assists and 13 digs, while Janae Heegaard controlled the net with 10 total blocks.

Defensively, Alivia Rutt anchored the back row with 25 digs and three service aces. Cedarville finished with 105 digs and 13 total team blocks, while holding Maryville to a .236 hitting percentage.

"It was a tough match to play and we knew it was going to be a mental battle against Maryville, but we did some positive things just in the end couldn't pull out the match. It was a disappointing loss but we have to rebound and get ready for tomorrow."
