Unbeaten Yellow Jackets grind out 2-1 win at Malone

CANTON, Ohio - United Soccer Coaches Division II No. 15 Cedarville picked up a 2-1 G-MAC victory over Malone at Pioneer Park.

The Yellow Jackets (5-0-3, 3-0-1 G-MAC) scored in each half and held off a late push by the Pioneers to stay unbeaten on the campaign.

Cedarville struck first in the fourth minute on an own goal when Kirk Wilson's throw in near the corner flag was directed in off a Malone defender.

Michael Catanzarite doubled the advantage in the 51st minute with his sixth goal of the season. Another Wilson throw in was flicked on by Pablo Novás Cortiñas to Catanarite who finished from close range.

The hosts pulled one back in the 72nd minute, but the visitors' back line held firm down the stretch to preserve the result.

Cedarville held an 11-7 advantage in total shots with a 6-2 margin on goal.

Quotable: Head Coach Brett Faro
"We're thankful that we were able to get two results this week. We are looking forward to preparing for next Saturday as we hit the midway point of the season. Points in the conference can be hard to come by and the guys have worked hard the first half of the season to put ourselves in a favorable spot. We are hungry to get back to work to improve next week and keep trying to build as a group."

Stinger Notes:
  • Catanzarite has scored six of the team's 12 goals this season.
  • Cedarville has played Malone more times (63) than any other opponent in program history.
  • The Yellow Jackets lead the all-time series, 43-13-7, and are unbeaten in their last 27 meetings vs. the Pioneers (24-0-3).
  • Malone's last win in the series was 2-1 in OT at Cedarville on Sept. 21, 1999.
  • CU is one result shy of the best unbeaten streak to start the season; the 2012 club went 8-0-1 out of the blocks.
