Hey,
So, our season ended last weekend. Overall, our season didn’t go how we wanted and expected it to. There’s no getting around that. Between wins and losses, and dealing with injuries all year long the whole year was just kind of a weird one. I don’t think I’ve ever quite seen anything like it, but for what we had I thought we competed well and gave it our best shot everyday. That’s all you can ask at the end of the day.
I’m excited about where the program is at. I think there’s a lot of young guys that got a lot of experience this year and are going to be big contributors in the years to come. I think one thing this season did accomplish was giving a lot of guys opportunities they might not have had in a normal situation, and that will only benefit them moving forward. Once some of the older guys get back we’ll be back in good shape.
There’s not much else for me to say. I’m just going to share the last Josh story and then peace of out here.

Josh Kneeland’s Top Ten Funniest Moments of His Career
#1 – Broken Leg
- One day after fall practice freshman year we ended right at the same time as softball did. Softball always parks up at the lot in between our two fields, and we always park in the grass out past right field of our field….across the road. Since we got done about the same time it just so happened that we were walking across the road to our cars while the softball team was driving past to go up to Cal. Josh saw this, so when he got to the road he fell over and started screaming bloody murder as he grabbed his leg. He was howling. We all ran over to see what was wrong. Josh was actually fine, and we all knew that, but the antics didn’t stop. It went on for at least two minutes….Long enough for 7 softball cars to get backed up on the road waiting for him to move. We finally got him up and, with the assistance of two other guys, off the road, but the softball girls weren’t happy. I have a feeling they knew it was a joke, but it was still funny.
Thanks for reading this year. It’s been fun.
Love you guys,
M. Russell

Hey,
We’ve only got one weekend left! Last weekend we had Senior Day and played Davis & Elkins for a three game series. The games didn’t go as well as we wanted, but it was good to honor our seniors. I’ll say more about that later, though.

Josh Kneeland’s Top 10 Funniest Moments of His Career
#2 – Pretending to be blind
- One day Josh showed up to practice with dark, square shaped sunglasses on. We weren’t sure what was going on, but by the end of practice it was clear that he was pretending to be blind. This carried on into the cafeteria for dinner that night. He was walking around aimlessly, hands up, not looking at people as he talked to them. He was walking everywhere really cautiously…feeling his way around before he stepped. It was pretty funny. It was also funny when he did the same thing the entire next day, and even funnier the day after. The act wasn’t just for the show, though. He says, “I even showered in those sunglasses.”
There’s not much else to write this week. All of our freshmen have been introduced, and we haven’t really had that many feuds this year. That may or may not be due to the absence to a few key players this season, but it is what it is. I do want to finish up this week by talking about our Seniors a little bit, though, because I think they’ve had a real lasting impact on this program. When we got here as freshmen we soon learned that the baseball team had earned a bit of a poor reputation around campus, but none of us really accepted that. Our group as a whole made a conscious decision that the team wasn’t going to look the same when we left. We’re headed into our last weekend series now, and while I’m proud of a lot of things this group has done, I’m most proud to say that we’re leaving the program in a much better place than we found it. Each guy has taken care of their business and been serious about the decision they’ve made as ballplayers and as men. We haven’t made it all the way through unscathed, but when we’ve tripped up we’ve handled it honestly and responsibly. Not a single one of us is leaving without having made significant strides in maturity and leadership. On the field stuff is important. You’ll never ever hear me say that winning isn’t important because it is, but this group has realized that there are things in life that are more important than wins and losses and that they sometimes need to be addressed in proper order. A lot of guys in this program have been positively impacted because of the culture that this group of Seniors created.
As encouraged as I am to look back and see how far things have come, I’m even more encouraged to look forward and see where it’s going. The guys we’re passing the torch off to are no joke. We’ve got some leaders and some men in that locker room who are more than capable of steering the baseball team in the direction it needs to go. Skill development and sport training are important, but so is culture. Without the right culture none of that is going to matter. At Cedarville, we know that means a lot more than just accountability and a strive for excellence. It means perspective and motive and intentionality, too. I’m thankful for guys who have come behind us and bought into that, and as we leave I’m excited to see how this team continues to grow in the future.
Love you guys,
M. Russell

Hey guys,
Markus Neff
I’m filling in for the Shark this week and I know it’s some big shoes to fill but I’ll do my best. I’m definitely not as articulate and probably not as funny, but I think I can give a decent update on the team from my view as the first base coach.
Team Update:
As Marc touched on last week, everyone on the team is hurt. Here is a quick rundown on the list of injuries from the season:
- Two torn UCL’s
- One broken wrist
- One broken jaw
- One old man disease
- One in need of a full back replacement
- One UCL Sprain
- One Elbow chrodomasomething aka bone spurs aka can’t bend or extend the elbow
- One partially torn rotator cuff
- Six pulled hamstrings
- One broken nose/eye/face
We are currently leading the G-MAC in balks, trips to Golden Corral, victories in Fortnite, and ibuprofen consumption.
The Incident:
I would like to take a moment to focus on the most recent injury and what is being known as “The Incident” from our trip to Trevecca. Now I was in the dugout watching the pregame festivities so I was not too aware of what happened. RS Freshman pitcher Elliott Gilmore broke his nose on Friday, April 20th.
The injury did not occur in the game and was caused by the actions of another teammate (Andrew Dunbar). I was able to sit down with all parties involved to get to the bottom of what really happened to Elliott’s face:
Elliott’s Story:
“I had just finished throwing with Drew Minnich, we walked in to the dugout to gather some of our things. Then, as I was heading for the gate, I thought I heard a bee buzzing near my face. Little did I know it was a fastball coming from the hands of who I thought was my good friend, Andrew Dunbar. The ball struck me on the nose and I was sent to the ground, only to look up and see a smirk on Andy’s face. I could no longer feel the pain of my nose, but just the pain of my heart and the betrayal of a teammate.”
Drew’s Story:
“We were in the bullpen grabbing our stuff and so we were walking in the bullpen and there were still guys warming up on the field but we didn’t think much of it since we were still in the bullpen. Then I heard the sound of a 90mph fastball popping the mitt in the bullpen. However, it wasn’t the mitt. It was Elliott’s face. I knew it was bad when his nose was pointing South and his face was looking East. Once I realized what happened in the bullpen I ran to get Kurt and told him to bring the cavalry (aka Trainer Brett and the med kit). I brought Kurt back to the bullpen to save my teammate’s life.
Dunbar’s Story:
“It was a beautiful Friday night; I was blessed with the opportunity to throw with Eli “The Truth” Weldy before the game. It had been just over a week since my last camel ride so my arm was feeling pretty juicy and I was letting the ball fly. I overthrew Weldy a few times and was curious if someone had poured concrete in his shoes based on the attempts he made at catching the ball. One throw sailed high and to the right and as Weldy was unable to make the catch (When asked to comment as to why he couldn’t jump to make the catch, Eli mentioned his pregame snack of Honeybuns and mentioned that he may have been a little sluggish from the tasty treats) I noticed the ball was heading directly for Gilmore’s left side of the nose piece of his Oakley’s. I debated yelling at him to look out but feared he would have turned and caught the ball square which would have been much worse than the broken nose. So while yes I broke his nose, you could also say I saved his life…by being silent.”
Quotes of the Szn:
“Kurt, can you pour some cold water on my hands to warm them up?” – Jesse Bush
“Oh yeah, well my dad eats light bulbs” – Josh Kneeland
“Guys get this tarp off we have a storm rolling in” – Coach Manes

What are your three favorite things about Cedarville?
DJDraggy’s pre-practice playlists; The mints in the library, I’m sure the librarians hate me because I’ve at least taken 200 this week alone; The reputation that the baseball team and Brock hall residents get, I enjoy the glares as soon as I tell them where I live and what sport I play.
Which Senior are you going to miss the most?
Definitely Eli Weldy, I’ll always miss “the truth” with his influential poems and his long talks to his girlfriend on the bus ride home. Love you, Weldy.
What is the coolest thing you have planned for the summer?
I plan to go out West and backpack the Rockies for a week, I will get to know nature in more ways than I should.
Who is better at Fortnite, you or your roommate Bryce Hughes?
Some nights I think my stuff can compete with him, but the most days that I watch him until 2 am while I try to sleep help me realize that I’ll never be as good as him.
Speaking of Hughes, what are your feelings towards him dating your little sister Elli?
Wait what??? I was never informed of this, this is news to me, I’m going to have to have a talk with him if he’s not playing Fortnite right now.
Thanks for reading.

Hey,
Sorry I missed you last week.
We went 2-2 last week taking victories against Ohio Christian and Alderson Broaddus. Shout out to Josh Kneeland for striking out FIFTEEN in 8.2 innings on Saturday. He was a stud all game long, and although he couldn’t quite finish the game he was a big reason we won.
Those of you who have been in touch with our season at all this year know that we’ve been absolutely infested with injury bugs. We can’t seem to get rid of them. They just keep popping up everywhere. All year long we’ve had guys playing hurt, guys playing out of position, guys playing positions they’ve never played before, and so on. I was proud of how we battled through that this week and came out at .500. For fun I decided to attach a photo of what our field positioning looked like during our last game of the week on Saturday.

This diagram shows each position on the field and is marked by what position the player who was at that spot started the season at. As you can see, it’s been a little crazy. But, guys are getting the job done. We’ve had guys step up and hit, step up and defend, and do it in places that they’re not comfortable with. There’s been days where the adversity has gotten us down this season, but I think we’ve done a good job of responding and not letting anything get us too down. It’s hard going through a season when nothing seems to be going the way you expected, but we’re trying to learn what we can from it and find a way to win every day. We’ve got a few weeks left of conference season and still have time to make a run at the tournament if we can get some things going.

Josh Kneeland’s Top 10 Funniest Moments of His Career
#4 – One Voice
- A couple times a year the musical group One Voice leads us in worship during chapel. On one of these occasions during Josh’s sophomore year Josh decided he wanted in on the action. So, about five minutes before chapel started, Josh walked down on the stage and stood right besides the risers. “I was getting some weird looks and one person suggested I go to the other side, but I told them it was fine,” said Josh when I asked him to recall this event from his perspective. Josh made it through the entire worship session participating with the One Voice group on stage.
#3 – Silent Treatment
- Josh came back to school Junior year with a different hair style than normal. It was clear that Josh had highlighted his hair, and despite his adamant denial nobody on the team was buying what he was selling on this one. Josh has pretty dark hair, but his front tips were super blonde. Josh insisted that it was “from the sun,” but nobody was having it. After a week or so of comments Josh started getting a little fed up with the whole thing. One day Ross, being the kind, thoughtful guy he is, looked at Josh and said, “Yo Josh, what was the highlight of your summer?” Pretty funny…but Josh didn’t really like it. That was the last Ross heard from Josh until the following January. Josh completely ignored him for an entire semester. This wasn’t because he tried really hard to avoid him and be kind about it. No…Ross would be around and would even make efforts to talk to Josh, but Josh would just straight up ignore anything he said. I asked Josh if he remembered this. He said, “Marc, I didn’t even acknowledge his existence. And it was easy.”

Hey,
Team Update:
We’ve had a lot of games canceled and moved around. The weather has been kind of crazy. Also have added some new injuries to our collection. It’s been kind of a crazy year, guys.
But, we’re supposed to get our weekend series in this week which is good. We’re done with our out-of-division conference games and are moving into the division for the rest of the season.
Freshman Spotlight: Max Jackson Miller

Last time you cut your hair?
How are your knees feeling these days?
- Will for sure need knee replacements by 29
Who is your celebrity crush?
One way you live up to WV stereotype?
- I drink sweet tea for breakfast, lunch and dinner
Favorite cereal and why?
- “Cinnamon Toast Crunch b/c the taste brings me to flavor town”
Alumni Update: Nate Bancroft
Nate Bancroft was one of a kind. He was a pitcher/outfielder converted outfielder only converted pitcher only. He had a good senior year as a weekend starter for us. Nate never lifted a day in his life until his senior year. He was also known for his receding hair line (must come with the name).
I caught up with Nate recently. He’s loving married life in New Hampshire with his “incredible wife.” It’s all good except for the blizzards that occur 3x/week. He’s currently working in outside sales with Oak Security and studying for his MBA. “Life is good and God is faithful.”
He did have a few words for the team. He told me to hit the gym, and wanted Ross to know that he has warned the NCAA that he’s potentially on banned substances b/c there’s no way he’s hit 4 home runs without them…. (he’s not).
“Finally, I’d like to say enjoy the last month of the season! The camaraderie (or comradity if you’re RL) you have now is truly a blessing.”
Oh, and Carissa is still single, Rob.

Josh Kneeland’s Top 10 Funniest Moments of His Career
#5 – Soft Toss 27
We have this one…I don’t even know what to call it….Thing we do in practice. It’s called soft toss 27. Basically what happens is you have a full defense out there, and hitters hit off of a soft toss at home plate and then the ball is played live from there. The defense has to get 27 outs in a row, without an error, in order to be done. This means that if there is an error you go all the way back to 0 and start over. I’m sure you can see how this might take quite a while sometimes.
The pitchers don’t usually have anything to do with this drill, but during one spring practice coach allowed the pitchers to hit during soft toss 27. I had the privilege of being the tosser for this, so I had a front row seat to the whole thing.
Josh came up and said he wanted it put right in his sweet spot, which for a soft toss was up in front of his left shoulder (right handed hitter). I’ll be honest – I put it right there, and Josh smacked it. Home run.
I need you guys to understand real quick how impressive that is. Driving the ball off of a soft toss is incredibly difficult, and our field is huge. I had never seen any of our hitters come very close to hitting one out like that before, and Josh just walked up and did it like it was nothing. Everyone was kind of just like, “did that really just happen???”
Well, imagine how we all felt when he did it again his next time up to bat. And then his third time up to bat. It was insane… so much so that the outfielders were getting upset and coach had to tell him to stop. He then hit a few doubles over their heads, and on his 6
th trip up to the plate I told him to hit one out again. He said “should I?” and I affirmed. He looked at Coach G for approval, and when he got the nod I tossed the ball in his “sweet spot” only for Josh to drive yet another ball out of the ballpark… this time on command. It was incredible.
Love you guys,
M. Russell

Hey,
It’s been a couple weeks! Here’s what we’ve got going on.
Team Update:
We’re currently in the midst of conference play. We haven’t any in division games yet, but so far we’re tied for 2nd on our side of the conference. We’ve yet to have a home game, but we’re hopeful that we will get at least one in before the season is over.
In other news:
- Senior Colton Potter pulled off his 2nd all nighter of the year and 18th of his college career
- Jesse Bush hit two home runs (one of them was….assisted over the fence)
- Coach Bo still hasn’t had his kid yet
- Nate Robinson recently got called up to the big leagues and made his first start with the Phillies the other night in MLB the SHOW ’16
- Eli Sanchez has added 3 cm to his biceps since breaking his jaw
- Freshman Noah Schleinitz has 4 of the team’s 6 wins on the mound
- Bryce Hughes still thinks he can beat me at basketball
- Dr. Anthony Moore cannot cannot cannot hit a baseball
- Freshman Noah Bult had his first kiss! "We're proud of you, buddy!"
Freshman Spotlight: Brendan Connor Toungate
Most attractive teammate?
- “Drew Minnich. I like the way he stares at me without saying anything.” These two are roommates I think…. :/
Favorite thing about yourself?
- “My favorite thing about myself is how amazing I am at fantasy football. I’ve won the ship two out of the three years it’s been around.”
Team nickname?
Are you single?
- “That’s a great question”
Do you want to be?
- “Depends on her answer to this question. If she answers yes then I would say yes myself. If she says no then I would have to change my answer above.”
There’s some interesting stuff in there that we’ll have to keep an eye on.

Josh Kneeland’s Top 10 Funniest Moments of His Career
#6 – Bees Killer
During the same weekend at D&E freshman year where we had our “chirping” incident (#8), we also saw Josh turn into the deadliest bee killer of.....Probably all time. Not only was the field a mess that day (it was muddy and stinky), but our dugout was being overrun by bees. Big bees. This was obviously something that we weren’t comfortable with. We needed the bees gone. We needed someone to kill the bees. A bee killer, if you will. We needed Josh. Josh took it upon himself to kill every single bee that he saw in our dugout. Once he started, he never stopped. As soon as he killed one, another would fly out. Pretty soon we had 2-3 out there at a time, always followed by 2-3 more. It was seriously insane. None of them escaped Josh’s wrath. Not a single one. Josh’s total number of bees killed that day was 27. He wasn’t the hero our team deserved, but he’s the one we needed that day.
Alumni Update:
I’ll be honest, I dropped the ball and didn’t get in touch with an alumni this week, so I’m going to try to say something spiritual to make up for it. You guys like that stuff.
I started playing baseball when I was four years old, and as I’ve gotten into these last few years of my playing days I’ve spent more and more time reflecting on all the life stuff the game has taught me. Along with that, as I’ve continued to mature I’ve realized more and more the parallels between the game of baseball and the Christian life. Recently, our team has been going through a little bit of a rough patch. We fought some tough battles against some good teams down south and came back with a losing record. We’ve had a couple 0-2 days in conference in the past week and a half. Some of our best players aren’t performing up to their own standards right now. We’ve had just a crazy amount of injuries already, and a lot of our every day guys are battling some nagging issues with their bodies. Anyone whose played baseball or been around baseball knows that it’s a game of failure. A good hitter hits .300, meaning he fails 7/10 times. People often say that there are two kinds of players: those who are humble and those who are about to be. Baseball can be mentally exhausting. Yogi Berra said baseball is 90% mental, and the other half is physical. I have no idea what he meant by that, but it just like a good time to throw that in there.
The point is that baseball is hard, and so is being a Christian. When our hearts and minds are humble we’re even more aware of our own failures and shortcomings. We can try so hard to do good only to be met with the reality that, in our own power, we can’t. Much like the game of baseball is set up to teach you how to fail, the world is going to beat you up at times, and much of being faithful is learning how to keep going when things are hard the same way you do when they’re good. As leaders, I’m encouraged by how well we’ve done with keeping this mindset when things haven’t gone the way we wanted. In every circumstance I think it’s important to give some thought to how this situation, as little as it may seem in the grand scheme of things, could be preparing us for something down the road.
Thanks for reading. Sorry for the long wait. Cheer us on as we play Findlay and Hillsdale this weekend at home!
Love you guys.
M. Russell

Hey,
Team Update:
We’re in Florida! The weather is super nice and we’re loving getting to play ball with no class to worry about. We’re down in Kissimmee as opposed to Clearwater where we usually go and it’s been great. The facility we’ve been at is really nice with 5-6 nice fields, and a big Minor League stadium at the same site. Also, the place we’re staying is sweeeeet. We have condos with 6-7 guys in a house, a big pool, a fitness center, and a hot tub at every house, too!
We won our first game down here last Friday against Rockhurst, but have dropped the last three since then. We’ve had a game or practice every day we’ve been down here, so we’ve been going pretty hard. We have a few very winnable games to close out the week and need to go get them before we come back to the cold.
Freshman Spotlight: Bryce Hughes
Favorite thing about yourself?
- “How I can beat Marc Russell one on one no matter the place, time or setting” (wrong)
Can you beat me 1 on 1?
- “Yes, with a hand tied behind my back” (this is so wrong. He’s good a lot of stuff, but he’s trash at basketball and I’d mop the floor with him.)
Favorite childhood memory?
- “Probably the first time I beat my brother in soccer. Still brag about that to this day.”
Do you and your roommate get along?
- “Depends on the day, if we are playing fortnite on a squad then no, and normally bitter ties to follow. But when it comes to family relations and room chemistry I would say all is going swell”
How good are you at fortnite?
- “I would have to say I’m better than Jessse Bush, but just a level below Ninja. But for those of you who don’t know what that means, yes I’m pretty amazing at it.”
Alumni Update: Jordan Adams (also known as “Jadams”)
Jordan Adams was a 4-year pitcher for the Yellow Jackets from 2013-2016. I had the privilege to play with him during my first two years here and he was one of the hardest workers and biggest competitors we had on our team. He was also crazy.
Jadams is best known for a home run ball he gave up at Ohio Dominican his senior year. I was not at that game as I was hurt all year and didn’t travel with the team that day. However, from what I’ve heard, it was an absolute tank. Most have even said that it was the furthest ball they’ve ever seen hit, and years later there are still jokes made about that ball just now landing.
I recently caught up with Jadams who said life after Cedarville is going pretty well. He’s working full-time for Otis elevator down in Louisville, KY. He’s also gotten huge. He’s put on at least 30 lbs. of muscle since he’s stopped playing ball. It’s sweet.
I asked Jadams if he had anything to say to the team or specific guys on it. He said, and I quote, “boys boys boys, in my whole career at Cedarville we never lost one game. We just ran out of innings on a couple of occasions. – Michael Jordan – Jordan Adams.” He also said, “keep the train going, fellas...it’s the Jacket way! Miss ya’ll.”
Thanks for the encouragement, Jordan. We miss you.
And thanks for keeping up to date with us. We take the blog thing really seriously here on the CU baseball team and are thankful for everyone who reads it.
Love you guys.

Hey,
Team Update:
We’re currently on our way down to Florida for our spring break trip. This is always one of the best times of our season so we’re really excited about our week and half coming up here. We get to be in warm weather, don’t have class…just have to play baseball.
Last week we played Charleston in a double header down in Mason. We won both games which was big for us heading into our spring break trip. Senior
Nate Robinson and Freshman (redshirt)
Elliott Gilmore threw all seven innings and gave up a combined one run on two hits. Nate struck out four in four innings of work sealing the win, and Elliott took the save with six strikeouts over three innings of work. Nice job, Nate.
Freshman Spotlight: Noah Benjamin Bult
What was your high school GPA?
Who is your favorite senior?
Teacher crush growing up?
- “I was homeschooled from 4t-7th grade, so not really anyone during that time. I never really had one honestly, but if I have to choose looking back I would probably say Ms. Watson from 11th grade physics.”
What do you feel is your best (physical) feature?
Have you had anything significant take place in your life recently?
- Passed an anatomy quiz, and recently started dating Hayleigh
Alumni Update: Andrew “Z” Ziegenfus

I know what some of you may be thinking…you just saw “Z” in the cafeteria the other day. You know he hasn’t graduated from school yet, so how is he our alumni of the week? You’re right…he hasn’t, and usually you do become an alumni by graduating and not being able to play anymore. Z just quit the team though, so he’s still an alumni from the baseball team, just not the university yet.
Z transferred in a couple years ago from a small school in New York I think. He was hurt in his first practice with us during fall ball that year and missed a few weeks of practice. He ended up starting at first base for us and made us look a lot sweeter walking up to the field cause he’s so tall and everything. Z is famously known for being on time and on schedule for every little thing he does. It’s honestly incredible. True story…3x I’ve been part of a small group of guys who have actually been waiting on him to go somewhere, and a few others have as well. I know you won’t believe this, but we actually have picture evidence each time it’s happened, and I’ll attach those at the end of this section.
I recently caught up with Z to see what he was up to and how he was doing. He said he’s currently pursuing his callings of teaching health and physical education and marrying Jennah. When he’s not teaching he enjoys things like riding the bike at the gym, hanging out with his roommate Eugene, and working in the berry fields, but only if Jennah is there. This is about as far as we got in the conversation because he had to go meet Jennah somewhere.
I later texted him and asked him if he had anything specific to say to anyone. He said “to the team I would like to say thanks for making me feel like I’m still one of the guys. To Dan, I can’t believe you transferred. I thought we were quitting together. To Markus, I wish you would have told me earlier you were going to break your hand 'cause now I feel like I could actually get some reps. And to the coaches, maybe make the apparel more neutral in the future. Maybe have it say ‘Go Jackets’ cause I feel weird wearing a baseball sweat shirt around now.”
Josh Kneeland’s Top 10 Funniest Moments of His Career
#8 – Chirping
During our freshman year we went to D&E for a weekend series with them. It was one of the most memorable weekends of my career here for a lot of reasons (none of them really good), but those are stories for another time. During one of the games our entire dugout got in trouble with the umpires for “chirping” too much. This led to coach confronting Josh specifically a little while later (b/c he was for sure the loudest), and telling him to get it under control a little bit. This resulted in Josh being forced to quiet down, yet still find a way to make his presence felt and heard. He devised a system where he would stand a few feet away from teammate Marshall Johnson, whisper something he wanted to “chirp,” and then Marshall would immediately yell it out to the guys on the field. So, as I’m standing between the two of them, I’m listening to Josh whisper things like “hum now kiiiiid” and “throw em a chair here kiiiiid,” followed by Marshall yelling them before Josh was even done it seemed. This went on and on for a few innings, and was pretty much non stop. Kind of ridiculous looking back, but hilarious nonetheless.
Wish us luck in Florida this next week or so. Love you guys.

Hey,
Little bit of a longer one today. A lot going on, so here we go!
Team Update:
We’ve practiced a lot. I don’t really know what else to say here. We haven’t had a game in a few weeks now. Our weekend series with Charleston got moved to Cincinnati on Thursday. We’re getting a little banged up already with 4-5 guys on the DL right now, so we’re looking for some other guys to step up and throw productive innings, have productive at bats, and play solid defense.

Favorite color and why?
- “Blue. It’s not plain but not too flashy either. A lot of good hues within blue.”
Have you ever been arrested?
- “Not been arrested but I went to a high school football game with my cop uncle and watched him arrest a guy. So that was fun.”
Special talent?
- “Getting kicked out of group chats”
Who is your favorite ex-girlfriend?
- “I never officially dated until my current girlfriend and I don’t see that ending. Also, I don’t have a favorite former girl. They are all incredibly subpar compared to my absolutely superb girlfriend.”
Do you leave your weights out in the weight room?
- “With one or two exceptions when I first started lifting with the team, I typically pick up more weights than I put down, or at least try to leave it better than I found it.”
Alumni Update: Peter Martin class of 2015
Peter is one of my most beloved baseball alumni. Peter played in all four of his years here. I never got a great feel for Peter’s progression as a player here, but from what I could tell he was a walk on who did some catching, maybe played some first base or something, and then eventually found himself on the mound. I don’t really fact check anything I write on here though so that could all be wrong.
Pete had some nasty stuff. He had average velocity and a pretty nasty slider. When Pete was on he was really good. Pete did struggle with his control at various times. I think he’s the one who took the nose, right arm, and left foot off of our wooden batter that the pitchers use. As inconsistent as he could be, the one thing you could always count on when you stepped in the box against him was at least one fastball up around your head. He also caught for the alumni in our alumni game a couple years back. Pete’s most memorable moment in his baseball career here was a diving stop on a ball that was about to roll into our dugout at Carson Newman. That was the worst weekend of baseball in my entire life.
Pete also became pretty well-known during his senior year for being president of DOE.
I recently got a chance to catch up with Peter. He said, “Things are going great, I am living the dream. I didn’t wake up at 4:30 a.m. one time over the last two months to practice baseball. I am loving married life and all of the fun and adventures that come along with it. I work at Cincinnati Insurance Company as a commercial insurance underwriter. My athletic passions have switched from baseball to golf and I am motivated by the goal to someday beat Sam Summerlin in one single round of golf (I’m not close). I am currently already bracing myself for heartbreak because my stupid self is already convinced that the ‘new look’ Cavs are going to win the finals.” Me too, Pete. Me too.
I asked Peter if he had anything specific he would like to say to the team, coaches, or players. This is what he had:
- To the team: “Grind hard, till you see someone grind harder, then stop.” (This is a quote from Gandhi, made popular by Peter Martin, stolen by Sam Summerlin and ultimately used as a pre-game motivational phrase by Coach Manes. Most players now on the team probably won’t get this, but it’s value is unchanging.)
- To Jesse “OG” Bush: “Remember that Fortnite stats are more important than any achievements on the diamond. Keep your priorities straight.”
- Shout out to Eli Weldy, Troy Ericson, SMD, and Nick Kaiser who are all on pace to break my 2014 hit batsman per innings pitched record of .664. Continuing at your current pace will put each of you in elite company. #PositionPlayerTurnedReliefPitcher
Josh Kneeland’s Top 10 Funniest Moments of His Career
#9 – Chocolate Soft Serve
- One of our go-to spots for food is Golden Corral. We go there once every year during our trip south around spring break. This particular instance took place during our first trip freshman year. As everyone got done with their meal some of the guys began moving towards dessert, and Josh in particular decided to go with chocolate soft serve ice cream. As he was just a little way through his cone one of the seniors pointed out to Josh that he had gotten some ice cream on the side of his mouth. Naturally, one would wipe it off and try to be more careful, right? Not Josh. Josh decided to be even sloppier. As he continued to eat his ice cream he continued to get ice cream all over his face, and kept asking the senior who pointed it out “if it was better,” “if he had gotten it all off,” and “if he was happy now.” Before you knew it, Josh had chocolate soft serve all around his mouth, on his chin, both cheeks, in one of his eye brows, and even a solid chunk on his forehead. Right in the middle of the restaurant.
Love you guys.

Hey,
Team Update:
We lost all 3 of our games this past week. Erskine was pretty good. Overall, for our first time being outside, we didn’t do that bad. But I don’t like ranking bad and I don’t like losing so I’m not going to keep talking about it.
Freshman Spotlight: Drew Bryant Minnich
1) Favorite cereal?
2) Are you funny?
- “I would say I have my moments but all in all I’m not funny.
3) Are you single?
4) Favorite movie?
- Guardians of the Galaxy, but likes any superhero movie
5) Most embarassing moment?
- “At lunch one time I was eating spaghetti at lunch and some it fell on my gray shirt and then after lunch I went to the bathroom and tried washing it off and I put water on the stain and it made the stain worse and now my shirt was all wet so it was more noticeable so then I had to go the rest of the day with my shirt like that.”
Alumni Update: Marshall “Scumsack” Johnson
Before we hear from Marshall I’d like to just take a trip down memory lane of Marshall’s team photos. We’ll start with his Freshman year and progress onward from there.

Marshall was a beloved student here. He was a 4-year starter who never started game one, but always worked his way into the lineup for us. He was a good student and an honorary member of SPL. Marshall was one of the funniest guys on our team. I remember coming in as a freshman and having a lot of good laughs with him during our workouts at shortstop. He was also a master instigator, which is probably what I respected most about him. During bus rides you would never hear anything from Marshall, but you’d definitely hear a lot because of him.
I recently talked to Marshall and he seemed to be doing well. He’s currently pursuing a master’s degree in Medical Sciences at USF in preparation for medical school. Aside from his “educational passion” he is also working towards an even greater passion that began during his baseball career here which is to reach the illustrious 315 lb. bench press.
I asked Marshall if there was anything particular he’d like to say and he said, “I would like to congratulate SMD on an excellent start to his senior season. I couldn’t think of a better way to start… right on top (of the ERA category.) Also, congrats to Eby and Markus on the bombs. You kids are doing it right.”
Marshall lives right around Orlando, which conveniently for you is right where we’re playing over spring break this year. Come down in a few weeks to watch your favorite Cedarville athletics team AND visit with one of your most beloved baseball alumni all in the same week!

I mentioned last week that we would be counting down Josh Kneeland’s top ten funniest moments of his career here. We did some brainstorming on our road trip and just came up with as many memories as we could. We came up with 20 when I had to stop us. It was difficult to cut it to 10. We flirted with the idea of doing a top 20, but I just felt that 10 would be better. Obviously, these won’t be as funny to everyone as they are to us, but for those who know Josh…here we go.
#10 – Standing up in chapel
- This is not one specific event. Rather, it’s one that has happened 10, 20, 50, hundreds of times probably. The basic principle is that anytime someone is asked to stand and be recognized in chapel, Josh stands. So, when Dr. White asks the new freshmen to stand each Fall and be recognized, Josh stands. When he asks the sophomores to do the same thing right after, Josh stands. Juniors and seniors? Josh stands up. Every year, every time. When 4.0 students are asked to stand up Josh always joins the scattered 15 people who actually got a 4.0 for their round of applause. When we have prospective students and families who are asked to stand up and be welcomed, Josh stands. When Dr. White recognizes the trustees, Josh stands. When pastors are here for the pastor’s conference, he stands. He stands with the missionaries. He stands with the alumni. He stands with the veterans. He stands every time. And it’s funny every time.
Love you guys.

Hey guys,
I’m going to try to keep this whole blog thing short and sweet. That’s just kind of how I roll. However, I do want to take some space to thank some of the great bloggers that have come before me. I think Pete Martin was one of them, and obviously Jaden did great work last year. Jaden really took the baseball blog to a whole new level, and while I’m honored to take his place I definitely feel the weight of the responsibility that’s before me. He raised the bar, and our team will be forever thankful for that. Pete was alright too.
Since this is the first blog you’re probably all asking, “what should we expect each week?”
Expectations are important, so I’ll answer that one.
Here’s a few things:
- BRIEF weekly team update. Brief.
- Team feuds. We have a lot of these, and as games start happening we start having bus rides, which means even more feuds. We enjoy dissecting these afterwards and throwing as many people under the bus as possible. And then putting it on our blog.
- ** I have the unique role of mediating any arguments that break out on the bus, so I’ll have a good perspective on these.
- Freshman spotlight
- Random alumni updates – we’ll get to hear from some of campus’ most beloved and missed baseball alumni.
- One more thing I’ll announce later
So, let’s get into it.
Our team, as I type these very words, is on the bus headed to our first series against Erskine College who is located in Due West, SC. We’re excited to play our first games and also to have a few days of not practicing at 5:30 in the morning. A couple big things to be paying attention to during this series:
- Nate Robinson will be making his second return to baseball. He missed all of last season with a torn UCL, and he’s really good, so we’re glad to have him back. He’ll be the starting pitcher in one of the games on Friday.
- Elliott Gilmore is also coming off of Tommy John surgery. He missed all of last season as well and is appearing in his first ever collegiate game this week. He’ll start the game on Friday that Nate doesn’t start in. We think he’s good, but we’ve never really seen him play, so hopefully it goes well.
- Eli Weldy (also known as Eliyahu Robbins) is coming back from TJ too. He’s reliable, and we missed him out of our bullpen last year. Hope to see him get an appearance this week.
I mentioned that we’ll take time each week to introduce the freshmen, but we also have a few transfers that came in this year. I’ll introduce them now so you can guys can get familiar with their faces.

On the far left is Nick Kaiser. He’s a 21 year old from Carrotsville, OH that transferred in from Shawnee State. In the middle is Troy Ericson. He’s a 21 year old transfer from Loris College. He’s originally from South Bend. He actually transferred in last year, but nobody knows who he is yet so I thought I’d include him. Hunter Kraynak is also 21. He’s from Hobart, IN and transferred from South Suburban College.
To finish off I want to announce what will be the most exciting about this blog this season. Those of you who know Josh Kneeland know very well that he is one of the funniest people to walk the earth. Easily the funniest person Cedarville has ever seen. He’s a senior this year, and we want to honor his funniness in a special way. In order to do this we will be counting down the
Top Ten Funniest Josh moments of his career here and talking about one each week, so be on the lookout for that as well.
Wish us luck. We love you guys.
