PORTSMOUTH, Ohio - A cold shooting spell cost the Lady Jackets their first loss of the season in a 68-57 decision at NAIA Division II No. 5 Shawnee State in a non-conference game.
Cedarville hung with the host Bears trailing 20-19 with 5:35 left in the opening half. The young Jackets then missed nine consecutive shots while Shawnee was running off 13 unanswered points for a 33-19 bulge early in period two.
The unbeaten Bears, 5-0 overall, opened up as much as a 55-36 advantage with 8:40 to go. CU closed the gap to 62-54 at the 2:30 mark and could have gotten closer. But, Shawnee rebounded misses of two straight one-and-one free throw situations to stay in control.
Alison Lemon finished with a game-high 14 points and four assists for the Lady Jackets, 3-1. Kara Cayton popped in 11 points while Aubrey Siemon and Jenna Smith added 10 points each.
Cedarville won the battle of the boards, 53-43, with Siemon pulling down nine. The Jackets recovered to shoot 46 percent from the field in the second half after suffering through a 19-percent performance in the first period. [STATS]
