CEDARVILLE, Ohio - NAIA Division II No. 5 Cedarville made all the big plays in the final two minutes in order to outlast No. 11 Walsh, 70-66, in front of 2,715 at the Callan Athletic Center in a marquis American Mideast Conference match-up.
In a contest that featured 10 lead changes and two ties in the second half alone, it predictably came down to the waning moments.
Ricardo Alliman muscled in a basket with 1:40 left to give CU the lead for good, 65-64. The Jackets then turned to the charity stripe to ice it. Chris Beals hit both ends of a one-and-one with 38 seconds remaining for a 67-64 spread. After the Cavs missed a three-pointer, Grant Walker buried two more free throws to put it out of reach.
Daniel Rose came off the bench with 13 points which included the 1,000th point of his career to become the 46th player in school history to reach the milestone. Matt Harner netted 11 of his 13 points in the second period; Alliman tallied 12 points; Christopher Walker had 11 points with a game-high eight rebounds and five assists; and Grant Walker tallied 10 points.
The Yellow Jackets, 18-1 overall and 3-0 AMC, were able to push their winning streak to 10 in a row. The visiting Cavaliers, 12-3 and 1-1 AMC, had their four-game victory run stopped.
Cedarville entered the game ranked #1 in the country in field goal percentage defense and #5 in scoring defense. The Cavs came to town #1 in three-point shooting percentage, #2 in overall field goal percentage, and #3 in scoring offense. The 41.9 percent shooting and 66 points scored were both season-lows for Walsh. [STATS]
