MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Daniel Rose hit a jump hook in the lane with 16 seconds left in overtime to give the NAIA Division II No. 5 Yellow Jackets a 70-68 victory at Mount Vernon Nazarene in an American Mideast Conference contest. CU tied the school record with its 11th consecutive victory.
The host Cougars elected not to call timeout and turned the ball over as time expired without getting off a shot. Cedarville, 19-1 overall and 4-0 AMC, had not held the lead since 6:25 left in regulation play.
The OT featured six points total between the two clubs and Rose's winner was the only field goal. After MVNU got their only two points on free throws with 4:25 left, Rose knotted the score with two charity tosses of his own with 2:21 to go.
The outcome appeared bleak when the Yellow Jackets trailed 65-60 with 1:25 remaining in regulation. CU forced the extra session when Grant Walker made two free throws with 2.7 seconds left to tie the game, 66-66.
After falling behind 23-12 nine minutes into the game, Cedarville turned to its defense again to get back in it. The Yellow Jackets, who lead the nation in field goal percentage defense, checked the Cougars on 32.8 percent shooting and held them to 22 points below their scoring average. MVNU dips to 12-6 and 2-2 AMC.
Rose finished with a team-high 16 points off the bench. Chris Beals and Christopher Walker had 13 points each while Ricardo Alliman totaled 11 points and 10 rebounds. [STATS]
