CEDARVILLE, Ohio - It took a long-range shooting display by Mount Vernon Nazarene to beat the NAIA Division II No. 1 Yellow Jackets, 76-71, in the Callan Athletic Center and bring the nation's longest winning streak to a halt at 14 games. A crowd of 2,355 turned out for the non-conference encounter.
The visiting Cougars, the pre-season No. 3 team in the country and the coaches' choice to win the American Mideast Conference, put together a 12-2 spurt in the final three minutes to claim their biggest win of the season. It was CU's first loss at home in 16 outings dating back to last season.
Cedarville, 22-2 overall, rarely held the lead. The Yellow Jackets recovered nicely from a nine-point deficit with 7:50 left to grab a 66-64 cushion on a basket by Ricardo Alliman at the 3:05 mark. Mount Vernon Nazarene responded with the next eight points to secure the win and up its record to 15-7.
Grant Walker buried five three-pointers and finished with 17 points while Chris Beals totaled 12 points and five assists. Alliman had 11 points and 10 rebounds with Matt Harner and Daniel Rose contributing 10 points each.
MVNU had to go 13-for-22 for a 59-percent accuracy from beyond the arc to solve one of the NAIA's top defenses. Cedarville entered the game ranked #1 in field goal percentage defense (.372), second in scoring defense (59.0), and fourth in three-point percentage defense (.286). No opponent this season had made more than nine treys in a game or shot better than 43 percent from deep against the Jackets. [STATS]
