XENIA, Ohio - A duel between two of the top teams in the American Mideast Conference resulted in a 1-1 deadlock as Cedarville and Houghton played 110 minutes on the artificial surface at the Athletes in Action Complex.
Wet turf at Yellow Jacket Field took the contest to Xenia. Unlike Friday night when CU and Roberts Wesleyan played in a steady rain at AIA, this one had calm, chilly conditions.
Houghton struck first with a goal in the 32nd minute. The Highlanders were able to maintain the 1-0 edge by intermission.
The Jackets equalized in the 55th minute by virtue of an own goal. A free kick by James Twinem near the end line left of the goal ricocheted off a Cedarville player before being deflected into the net by a Houghton defender.
From then on it was a battle to the finish as both defenses held steady for the draw. Each team placed five shots on goal with the visitors posting a 12-9 advantage in overall shots. There were 23 fouls apiece and Houghton received two yellow cards.
Kevin Bender picked up four saves for the Yellow Jackets, 7-2-3 overall and 2-0-2 AMC. The Highlanders' record is 7-6-1 and 4-1-1 AMC. [STATS]
