CANTON, Ohio - Jason Bender headed in the winning goal in the 87th minute to keep the Yellow Jackets' American Mideast Conference title hopes alive with a 3-2 decision at Malone.
Cedarville, 10-3-3 overall and 5-0-2 AMC, was playing its second match in less than 24 hours while the host Pioneers were fresh having had five days off. However, it was the Yellow Jackets who bolted to a 2-0 lead on a pair of penalty kicks.
Ryan Chaney finished off a PK in the 7th minute while James Twinem converted from the spot in the 37th. It was the first two penalty kicks awarded to CU this fall.
What followed was an interesting second half that included three goals, four yellow cards, and a red.
Malone got on the board in the 58th minute. Despite having a player sent off on a red card in the 71st minute, the Pioneers equalized in the 75th. However, Bender's first goal of the season was the winner on an assist from Matt Niemiec.
Kevin Bender came up with two saves in goal. Cedarville had the advantage in shots overall, 16-4, and in shots on goal, 7-4. [STATS]
