Jackets AMC co-champs; secure NAIA bid

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Matt Harner scored 22 of his 24 points in the second half to lead NAIA Division II No. 2 Cedarville to a 71-66 victory at Roberts Wesleyan. The Yellow Jackets clinched a share of the American Mideast Conference championship and locked up a berth to the 18th Annual NAIA Division II National Tournament.

It didn't start well for CU. The Jackets dropped into a 10-0 hole in the first three minutes, but they recovered to take their first lead, 16-15, at the 11:45 mark. A 40-footer at the halftime buzzer provided the host Raiders with a 36-35 advantage.

The Yellow Jackets, 27-3 overall and 12-1 AMC, opened the second half by scoring the first seven points. While they never trailed again, they did face two ties the last of which was 58-58 with 6:40 to go. Harner answered with one of his four three-pointers to begin a 9-2 spurt for a 67-60 margin in the final minute.

Christopher Walker totaled 12 points and eight rebounds while Ricardo Alliman added 10 points with eight boards for Cedarville, who tied Walsh for the AMC crown. The Jackets won the tiebreaker by virtue of beating the Cavaliers in the regular season to earn the first AMC automatic bid to the national tournament. Roberts Wesleyan finishes 10-17 and 1-12 AMC.
