Cedarville nips Taylor, 1-0

CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Kelsey Watkins scored early in the second half and the Lady Jackets blanked Taylor, 1-0, to open the season in the weather-plagued Cedarville Classic.

Watkins netted an unassisted goal 29 seconds into the final frame when she dribbled through the defense and tucked a low shot inside the far post. It was all the hosts would need as they outshot the Trojans 12-8 overall and 5-4 in shots on goal.

Freshman keeper Alysia Bennett made three saves in her collegiate debut. Defender Megan Spring made another save on a close range shot in the 86th minute that would have tied the match.

For the second straight year, the four-team event was hampered by horrendous weather. The start of the opener between Houghton and Marian was delayed 30 minutes by lightning.

It featured another stoppage for an hour and a half early in the second period. The two teams finally played to a scoreless draw through 90 minutes and the contest was called when lightning flashed again just before overtime.

The lightning detector went off yet again during the playing of the national anthem of the Cedarville/Taylor contest. It finally started at 9:30 p.m. and ended at 11:10. [STATS]
