Jackets beat Houghton, but stumble vs. Rio

CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Cedarville made quick work of Houghton in an American Mideast Conference tilt, but then dropped a non-league contest to Rio Grande during a tri-match played in the Callan Athletic Center.

The Lady Jackets swept Houghton 25-13, 25-16, 25-16 to improve to 4-1 in the AMC. Stephanie Rogers and Lauren Gill delivered nine kills apiece.

Kylee Husak was a force at the net by turning aside six blocks to go along with six kills. Erica Bartholomew issued 32 assists and Heather Kirkpatrick had 13 digs.

A much-improved Rio Grande squad ended 17 years of frustration and a 32-match losing streak to Cedarville by getting the better part of the Lady Jackets, 25-18, 16-25, 25-18, 27-25. The RedStorm, a former AMC member, is 7-3 in the tough Mid-South Conference and 18-11 overall.

After the two teams split the first two sets, Rio blasted out to an 11-point bulge in the third. The visitors never trailed in the fourth set even though they handled 11 ties all to their advantage.

Gill hammered 16 kills while Husak pounded 13 kills with three blocks for CU, 13-13 overall. Rogers added 10 kills, Bartholomew had 41 assists, and Kirkpatrick tallied 16 digs from the libero position.
