CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Timmy Waller scored in the 89th minute to cap a wild three-goal flurry that gave Cedarville a remarkable 4-3 victory over Indiana Wesleyan in the NCCAA Midwest Region championship game.
The outcome sends the Yellow Jackets to the NCCAA National Tournament in Kissimmee, Fla. on Dec. 1-4. It will be the 11th appearance for Cedarville, but the first since 2006.
The Yellow Jackets had no reason to make such plans when they faced a 3-1 deficit with eight minutes remaining. And, it could have been worse had goalkeeper Kevin Bender not saved a penalty kick midway through the second half.
Joseph Mueller gave the Jackets a shot of adrenalin when he buried a free kick in the 83rd minute to cut the deficit to 3-2. Three minutes later, Eric Newman buried a 25-yard strike to equalize.
The rally was completed when Waller took the ball across the top of the box and perfectly placed a left-footed shot into the upper corner for the winner.
Cedarville, 11-8 overall, scored all four of its goals in the second half. Matt Niemiec netted his team-high 15th tally of the season in the 52nd minute from James Twinem which, at the time, tied the match, 1-1.
The Yellow Jackets outshot IWU 28-16 overall and 11-10 in shots on goal. Bender was credited with seven saves. The Wildcats finish 11-10-1.
